Version1.2,Jun2025 www.dioo.com ©2025DiooMicrocircuitsCo.,Ltd.Jiangsu 9. FunctionDescription 9.1.Overview The DIA7986 is a low-dropout regulator (LDO) that consumes a low quiescent current and delivers an excellent line and load transient performance. These characteristics, combined with low noise and high PSRR with low dropoutvoltage, makethisdevice idealforautomotiveapplications. This regulator offers short-current limit, shutdown, and thermal protection. The operating junction temperature forthisdeviceis-40°Cto150°C. 9.2.Undervoltagelockout(UVLO) The DIA7986 contains an undervoltage lockout (UVLO) circuit that ensures that the device is functional when thesupply voltageis lower than the operational rangeofthe internal circuitry, whichdisablesthe outputuntil the input voltage is greater than the rising UVLO voltage (VUVLO). When VIN is less than VUVLO, the output is connected to the ground with a pulldown resistor (RPULLDOWN). When the device enters UVLO, the PG output is pulledlow. 9.3.Shutdown The enable pin (EN) is active high. Forcing the EN pin to exceed VEN(HI) will enable the device. Forcing the EN pintodropbelowVEN(LO)willturnoffthedevice.ConnectENtoINwhenshutdowncapabilityisnotrequired.The PG output pin is pulled low when the device is disabled. The DIA7986 has an internal pulldown MOSFET that connects an RPULLDOWN resistor to the ground when the device is disabled. Output capacitance (COUT) and the load resistance (RL) in parallel with the pulldown resistor (RPULLDOWN ) decide the discharge time after disabling. Theequation belowcalculates thetimeconstant: t=(RPULLDOWN ×RL)/(RPULLDOWN +RL)×COUT (1) 9.4.Currentlimit The device is protected during transient high-load current faults or shorting events by an internal current limit circuit.Thecurrentlimitisahybridschemethattransitionsfromacurrent-limitschemetoashort-limitschemeat the foldback voltage (VFOLDBACK). When the output is shorted, the device supplies a typical current called the short-circuit current limit (ISC). In a high-load current fault with the output voltage above VFOLDBACK, the current-limitschemelimitstheoutputcurrenttoICL.WhenthevoltagedropsbelowVFOLDBACK,ashort-currentlimit activatesthatscalesbackthe currentastheoutputvoltageapproaches GND. Forthis device,VFOLDBACK =0.45 ×VOUT(NOM). When the device is within the current limit, the output voltage is not regulated. The device begins to heat up whenacurrentlimiteventoccurs, andifathermalshutdownistriggered, thedeviceturnsoff.Whenthedeviceis in current-limit, the pass transistor dissipates power [(VIN - VOUT) × ICL]. When the device output is shorted and the output is below VFOLDBACK, the pass transistor dissipates power [(VIN - VOUT) × ISC]. The internal thermal shutdown circuit turns the device back on after the device cools down. The device cycles between the current limitandthermalshutdowniftheoutputcurrentfaultconditioncontinues.

Version1.2,Jun2025 www.dioo.com ©2025DiooMicrocircuitsCo.,Ltd.Jiangsu Figure22.Currentlimit 9.5.Thermalshutdown TheDIA7986has athermalshutdownprotection featurethatdisables thedevicewhen thejunctiontemperature risestoapproximately160°C.Thisfeaturehelpstoreducethepowerdissipatedbythedevice,allowingittocool down. When the temperature falls to approximately 130°C, the output circuitry is re-enabled. However, depending on various factors like power dissipation, thermal resistance, and ambient temperature, the thermal protection circuit may turn on and off repeatedly. This cycling helps to limit regulator dissipation and protect the regulator from overheating damage.Activating the thermal shutdown feature usually indicates excessive power dissipation as a result of the productof the (VIN - VOUT) voltage and the load current. For reliable operation, limit junction temperature to 150°C maximum. To estimate the margin of safety in a complete design, increase the ambienttemperatureuntilthethermalprotectionistriggered,useworst-caseloads andsignal conditions. The DIA7986 has a built-in protection circuit that guards against overload conditions. However,it's not meant to be triggered during regular operation. Running the device continuously into thermal shutdown can harm the device'sreliability. 9.6.Startupresponse The DIA7986 is equipped with noise reduction pin (NR) for noise sensitive applications. A noise reduction capacitor (CNR) at the NR pin bypasses noise generated by the bandgap reference. The CNR serves not only for noise reduction. The CNR works like the soft start timing capacitor during start-up. The controlled monotonic rampingofvoltagereference(adjustablesoft−start)is limitingtheinrushcurrent. 9.7.Devicefunctionalmodes The Device Functional Modes table shows the conditions that lead to the different modes of operation. See the ElectricalCharacteristicstableforparametervalues. Version1.2,Jun2025 www.dioo.com ©2025DiooMicrocircuitsCo.,Ltd.Jiangsu 9.8.Dropoutoperation If all conditions are met for normal operation but the input voltage is lower than the nominal output voltage plus the specified dropout voltage, the device operates in dropout mode. During dropout mode, the output voltage trackstheinputvoltageandthetransientperformanceofthedevicebecomessignificantlydegradedandactsas aswitch.Lineorloadtransientsindropoutcanresultin largeoutput-voltagedeviations. When the device is in dropout, VIN < VOUT(NOM) + VDO, directly after being in a normal regulation state, but not duringstartup, the pass transistor is driven intothe ohmicor trioderegion.Theoutput voltagecan overshootfor ashortperiodwhilethedevicepullsthepasstransistorbackintothelinearregionwhentheinputvoltagereturns toavaluegreater thanorequaltothenominaloutputvoltage plusthe dropoutvoltage(VOUT(NOM) +VDO). 9.9.Disabled Shuttingdowntheoutputofthedevicewillrequireforcingthevoltageoftheenablepintolessthanthemaximum EN pin low-level input voltage. Version1.2,Jun2025 www.dioo.com ©2025DiooMicrocircuitsCo.,Ltd.Jiangsu 10.2.Adjustabledevicefeedbackresistors Figure10showsthattheoutputvoltageoftheDIA7986canbeadjustedfrom0.55Vto5.5Vbyusingaresistor dividernetwork. The adjustable version DIA7986 requires external feedback divider resistors to set the output voltage. The feedbackdivider resistors,R1andR2settheVOUT,accordingtothefollowingequation: VOUT =VFB ×(1+R1/R2) (2) Setting the feedback divider current to 100 × the FB pin current listed in the Electrical Characteristics table can ignore the FB pin current error term in the VOUT equation, which provides the maximum feedback divider series resistance, asshowninthefollowingequation: R1 +R2 ≤VOUT /(IFB ×100) (3) 10.3.Dropoutvoltage A PMOS pass transistor is used to achieve low dropout. The PMOS pass device is in the linear region of operation and the input-to-output resistance is the RDS(ON) of the PMOS pass element when (VIN - VOUT) is less than the dropout voltage (VDO).The PMOS device behaves likea resistor in dropout mode therefore VDO scales approximately with the output current. PSRR and transient response degrade as (VIN - VOUT) approaches dropoutoperationwithany linearregulator. 10.4.Exitingdropout Aramping input supply causes an LDO to overshoot on start-up, as shown in Figure 27 when the slew rate and voltagelevelsareinthecorrectrange.Useanenablesignaltoavoidthiscondition. Figure27.Start-upintodropout Overshooting on the output of the regulator can be caused by the error amplifier having to drive the gate capacitance of the pass element and bring the gate back to the correct voltage for proper regulation. The gate voltage (VGS) is pulled all the way down to the ground to give the pass device the lowest on-resistance possible when the LDO is placed in dropout. However, the output will overshoot until the loop responds and the output currentpullstheoutputvoltagebackdownintoregulationifalinetransientoccurswhenthedeviceisindropout. Continue to add input capacitance in the system until the transient is slow enough to reduce the overshoot if thesetransientsarenotacceptable.
