D A8444A.005 M ay 31, 1996 FU N C TIO N S a Address B yte Valid addresses are 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 4A, 4C , 4E(hex), depending on the program m ing of bits A2, A1 and A0. W ith these addresses, up to eight M AS8444A IC s can be operated independently from one I2C -bus. N o other addresses are acknow ledged by the M AS8444A. The address inputs A0, A1 and A2 are program m ed by connection to G N D for An = 0 or to VD D for An = 1. If the inputs are left floating, An = 1 w ill result. For M AS8444AS, A2 is alw ays 1. b Instruction and data bytes Valid instructions from 00 to 0F and F0 to FF (hex); M AS8444A w ill not respond to other instruction value, but w ill still generate an acknow ledgem ent. Instructions 00 to0F cause auto-increm enting of the sub-address (bits SD to SA) w hen m ore than one data byte is sent w ithin one transm ission. W ith auto-increm enting, the first data byte is w ritten into the D AC addessed by bits SD to SA and then the sub-address is autom atically increm ented by one position for the next databyte in the series. Auto-increm enting does not occur w ith instructions F0 to FF. Valid sub-addresses (bits SD to SA) are 0 to 7 (hex) relating num erically to D AC 0 to D AC 7. W hen the auto-increm enting function is used, the sub-address w ill sequence through all possible values (0 to F, 0 to F, etc.). W hile the sub-address is betw een 8 and F no D AC outputs change. c I2C - bus Input SC L (pin 4) and input/output SD A (pin 3) conform to I2C -bus specifications. Pins 3 and 4 are protected against voltage pulses by internal zener diodes connected to the ground plane and therefore the norm al bus line voltage shall not exceed 5.5v. d Input Vm ax Input Vm ax (pin 2) provides a m eans of com prising the output voltage sw ing of the D AC s. The m axim um D AC output voltage is restricted to approxim ately Vm ax+VD AC m in w hile the 6-bit resolution is m aintained, therefore giving a finer voltage resolution of sm aller output sw ings.
