Description
The ES5108 isdesignfor3 1/2-DigitDigitalMulti- meter which combines an integratedA/D converter, MAX/MIN, hold,shortcircuitbeeper,low batteryde- tector,a frequency counter,and serialdataoutput. A ’HOLD’ inputallows theES5108 to hold thecur- rentA/D readoutorfrequency readout.The frequency counterisauto-rangingfrom 2KHz to 20MHz overa five decaderangewithKHz and MHz annunciators. Shortcircuitbeeperwillsound whenever thereadout islessthan30 afterenablingtheshortcircuitbeeper. Thisfeatureisusefulindetectingshortcircuitswithout w atchingtheLCD. The ES5108 provides3 independentdecimalpointdriv- ingpinsforthemanufacturertodeterminewhich deci- mal pointorunitisdisplay,the3 decimalpointdrivers arebuilt-inES5108. 1 Analog Common
The Common pin isused to setthecommon-mod voltageforthesystem in which theinputsignalsarefloatingwith respecttothepower supplyof theES5108. In most of theapplications,VIN-, VREF- and COMMON pinsaretiedto thesame point,so thatthecommon mode voltagecan be removed from thereferencesystemand theconverter.Insome applictions,VIN- may notatthesame pointwithCOMMON and thusa common mode voltageexistsinthesystem,The highCMRR(86db typical)oftheES5108 can take careofthiscommon mode voltage.Ne vertheless,itshouldbe careto preventtheoutputoftheintegratorfrom saturation. The COMMON pinisalsoused as a voltagereference.Itsetsa voltageof around2.9voltsmore negative thanthe positive supply.The COMMON voltageofES5108 hasa low outputimpedanceof ECj typical. The analogCOMMON istiedinternallytoan N-channelFET capableofsinking30mA. ThisFET willholdtheCOM- MON voltageat2.9voltswhen an externalloadattemptstopulltheCOMMON voltagetow ardthepositive supply. The sourcecurrentof COMMON isonly10a A, so itiseasytopullCOMMON voltagetoa more negative voltage withrespecttothepositive supply. When thetotalsupplyvoltageislarge enough tocausethezenertoregulate(>7V),theCOMMON voltagewillhave a low temperaturecoefficienttypicallylessthanD W C. Thisvoltagecan be usedtogeneratetheES5108 reference voltageand anexternalvoltagereferencewillbe unnecessaryinmost cases.

2 Reference Voltage
Fora 1000 countsreading,theinputsignalmust be equaltothereferencevoltage.As a result,itrequirestheinputsignal be twicethereferencevoltagefora 2000 countsfull-scalereading.Thus,forthe200.0mV and 2.000V full-scale,the referencevoltageshouldequal100.0mV and 1.000V,Insome applicationsthefull-scaleinputvoltagemy be otherthan 200mV or2V,but600mV .Forexample,thereferencevoltageshouldbe setto300mV and theinputsignalcan be used directlywithoutbeingdivided. The differentialreferencecanbe usedduringthemeasurementofresistorby theratiometricmethod and when a digital readingof zeroisdesiredforQ Ø]ÙÛÚ M 0. A compensatingoffsetvoltagecan be appliedbetween COMMON and VIN- and thevoltageofbeingmeasuredisconnectedbetweenCOMMON and VIN+.
3 System T iming
The oscillatorfrequency isdividedby fourpriortoclockingtheinternaldecadecounters.The signalintegratetakes a fixed 1000 countstimeperiodwhich isequalto4000 clockPulses.The backplanedrive signalisderived from dividing clockfrequency by 240.To mak e a maximum rejectionoflinefrequency(60Hz or50Hz)noisepickup,thesignalintegrate periodshouldbe a multipleof thelinefrequency period.For 60Hz-noiserejection,oscillatorfrequenciesof 120KHz, 80KHz, 60KHz, 48KHz, 40KHz, etc.shouldbe selected.For50Hz rejection,oscillatorfrequenciesof100KHz, 50KHz, 40KHz, etc.w ouldbe suitable. Forallrangesoffrequency Ü r £ shouldbe 100K j ,Ý Þ isselectedfrom theapproximateequationf^ 0.45/RC.For 48KHz clock(3reading/second),Ý £ =100PF.
4 IntegratingResistor
The inputbufferamplifierand integratorbothhave classA outputstagewith100a A ofquiescentcurrentand can supply 20a A drive currentswithnegligiblelinearityerrors.The integratingresistorshouldbe chosentoremainintheoutput stagelineardrive region.Itshouldbe noticedthattheintegratingresistorshouldnotbe so large such thattheleakage currentsofprintedcircuitboardwillinduceerrors.Fora 200mV full-scaletherecommended integratingresistorvalueis 47K j and for2V full-scaleis470K j .
5 IntegratingCapacitor
The integratingcapacitorshouldbe selectedtomaximize integratoroutputvoltageswing withoutcausingoutputsatura- tion.IftheanalogCOMMON isused as voltagereference,aR 2V full-scaleintegratoroutputswing issatisfactory. For 3 readings/second(48KHz clock)a 0.22a F valueof Ý|pßgà issuggested.When differentoscillatorfrequenciesareused, Ý|pßgà must be changedininverseproportiontomaintainthenominalR 2V integratorswing. The integratingcapacitorshouldhave low dielectricabsorptiontominimizeroll-overerror.An inexpensivepolypropy- lenecapacitorwillw orkwell.
6 A uto-Zero Capacitor
The auto-zerocapacitorsizehas some influenceon systemnoise.A 0.47a F capacitorisrecommended for200mV full scalewhere noiseisvery important.A 0.047a F capacitorisadequatefor2V full-scaleapplications.A mylar type dielectriccapacitorisadequate.
7 Reference VoltageCapacitor
When VIN- istiedtoanalogCOMMON, a 0.1a F capacitoradequatetobe thereferencecapacitor.Ifa large common-mod voltageexistsand theapplicationrequiresa 200mV fullscale,a largervalueisrequiredtopreventroll-overerror.A 1.0a F capacitorwillholdtheroll-overerrorto0.5count.

8 TEST
The TEST pinistiedtotheinternallygenerateddigitalsupply.It’s potentialis5V lessthanQ i .Thus TEST may be used asthenegative power supplyconnectionforexternallygeneratedsegment drivers. IfTEST ispulledlow toQán allsegmentsplustheminus signwillbe activatedand thedisplayshouldread-1888.For suchoperation,thesegment hasa constantDC voltageand may destroy theLCD displayifleftinthismode forseveral minutes.
9 Frequency Counter
The ES5108 provides2KHz to 2MHz five-decadeauto-rangefrequency counter. In thecountermode, pulsesatthe FREQ-IN willbe countedand displayed.The frequency counterderivesitstimebasefrom theclockoscillatorand gets one readoutpersecond.The frequency counteraccuracy isdeterminedby theoscillatoraccuracy.Foraccuratefrequency measurement,a 40KHz quartzcrystaloscillatorisrecommended. "Hold"functionwillholdthecurrentreadoutand converteroperation. "MAX" functioninES5108L willdisplaythemaximum value. "MAX/MIN" functioninES5108D hastwo mode :MAX and MIN. When theMAX/MIN ispressedforthefirsttime,the meterdisplaysthemaximum value.When theMAX/MIN ispressedagain,themeterdisplaystheminimum value.The meterreturnstonormalmode iftheMAX/MIN ispressedmore thenone seconds.
11 Serialdata output
theES5108 providesserialdataoutputforuseinconnectionwithmicrocontrollers.Duringthisoperation,ES5108 uses CLK, SDO and EOC pins.The following isthetimingdiagramofthisconnection.
