An Introduction To Therm atelTechnology & Products Thermatel switches employ twin RTD sensors to sense process change inleveland flowapplications.One sensor measures the surroundingprocess temperatureto provide a reference.The second sensor isself-heatedto establish a temperaturedifferentialabove thereferencetemperature. Inlevelapplications,thecoolingeffectofcontactingmedia reduces the temperaturedifferencebetween the RTDs. In flowapplications,an increaseinflowratefurtherdecreases the temperaturedifference.Ineach instance,the decrease intemperaturedifferencetriggersa relayaction. Reference□ RTD Mass balancing element Transm itter Therma telswitches rely on two m iniature sensing elements to detectheattransfer.Resistance Temperature D etectors(RTDs) establish a thermalrelationship that establishes thebasisfor flow and leveldetection.O ne RTD measures the temperatureof the surrounding media wh ich servesas the instrumen t’sreferencetemperature. The second RTD is heatedtoestablish a temp erature differentialabove the reference temp erature.In flow sensing applications,the heatedRTD coolswithincreas - ing flow. In levelsensing applications,the RTD coolsin the presenceof med ia.In each case,coolingthe heated RTD decreasesthe differentialtemperaturebetween the two RTDs .This decreaseis then convertedintoa relay actuation w hichperforms an alarmfunction. Principleof Op eration:Flow Meter Therma ldispersion technology providesa mass flow m easurementof airor gas.Thisis accomp lishedby preciselymeasuringthecooling effectas the m ass(mole - cular)flow passes the heated sensor.The sensorconsists oftwo elements:the reference wh ichmeasures thetem - peratureof the gas and a second elemen twhich isheat - ed ata variable power.This maintains the desiredtem - peraturedifference between the two sensors. The illustration on the top ofthispage show s the am ountof pow errequired tomaintaina constanttem - peraturedifference between the two sensors.Under low m assflow conditions,there ism inimalcooling and little power isrequired.Asthe m assflow increases,mo re power isrequired.Thisprovides excellentlow flow sensitivity and high turndown capabilities. Each instrum entisfactory calibratedand configured for the specificapplication.Ifnecessary,the TA2can be reconfigured inthe fieldfor differentconditions. Strengths and Cautions Direct m ass flow m easurem ent—d oes not require pressure or temp erature com pensation wh ich is required by other technologies. Thermatel offers excellent low flow sensitivity: gas velocities from 25 ft/m in (0.13 m/s) to over 50,000 ft/m in (255 m/ s). Thermatel products are easy to install and can be “hot tapped.” An alternative flow m eter technology should be considered where condensed m oisture is continuously present. Refer to Magnetrol bulletin 54-621 for further technical information on Thermal Dispersion Mass Flow .

Both liquid and gas flow detection is obtainable. The TD1 is available with 24 VDC power with the TD2 available in either an AC or DC version. The TD2 also provides LED indication through an optional glass window, mA output for diagnostics or repeatable flow/level indication, optional hermetically sealed relay, time delay adjustment, and remote electronics. Continuous diagnostics on both units provides assurance that the switch is operating properly. General Description: The Ma gnetrol TG1/TG2 switch is the industry’s only two-wire, intrinsically-safe therm al dispersion switch. The switch consists of a probe and preamplifier with remote DIN rail electronics. Barriers in the DIN rail enclosure provide a two-wire, intrinsically -safe circuit to the probe/preamplifier. Product Operation: The pream plifier converts the temperature difference to a pulse signal wh ich is super-imposed on the two wires providing power to the sensor. The DIN rail electronics provide operation control including set point adjustment, LED indication of flow/level, relay, fail-safe adjustment, and time delay. A non-linear m A output signal is available for diagnostics and repeatable flow/level indication.
