1.1 PrincipleofO peration

The simpleand foolproofoperation ofthe top mo unted floatswitchesisillustrated in figures1 and 2. A perman entm agnet Œ isattached toa pivoted switch actuatorand adjustme ntscrew .A sthe floatŽ rises following the liquid level,itraisesthe attraction sleeve into thefieldofthe magn et,which then snapsagainstthe non-magnetic enclosingtube ,actuating theswitch‘. The enclosingtube providesa static pressureboundary between theswitch m echanism and the process.O n a falling level,an inconelspring retractsthemagn et, deactivatingthe switch. Thissection providesdetailedproceduresforproperly installingtop m ounted levelswitches. Cau tion: If equipm ent is used in a ma nner not specifiedby the man ufacturer,protection provided by the equipm ent m ay be impaired.

2.1 Unpacking

2.4 Wiring

C aution: All Top Mo unting unitsare shipped from the factory with the enclosing tube tightened and the switch housing set screw locked to the enclosing tube.Failureto loosen the set screw prior to repositioning the supply and output connections m ay cause the enclosing tube to loosen, resulting in possibleleakage oftheprocess liquid orvapor. T op m ounting controlsare shipped w iththe conduitentry oftheswitch housingplaced 180° opposite thetank con - nectionstosimplify installation in mo stcases.Ifthe loca - tion oftheconduitentryon the levelswitch isappropriate totheinstallation,proceedto Step 4 tobegin wiringthe unit.Ifanotherconfiguration isdesired,the switch housing can be easily rotated by firstfollowing Steps1,2 ,and 3 . NOT E: A sw itch orcircuitbreakershallbe installed inclose proximity to equipm ent and within easy reach of operator.It shall be m arked as thedisconnecting device for theequipme nt. 1. N OTE: Ob serve all applicable electrical codes and proper wiring procedures. Preventm oisture seepageinto the enclosure by installing approved seal-drain fittingsin the conduitrun leadinginto theunit. Cau tion: In hazardous areas, do not power the unit until the conduit is sealed and the enclosure cover is screwe d dow n securely. 7. Replace housingcover. 8. Ifcontrolhasbeen furnished w ith an explosion proofor mo isture proofswitch housing,itm ustbe sealed atthe conduitoutletw itha suitablecom pound ornon-harden - ingsealanttoprevententrance ofair. 9. 3.0 Switch DifferentialAdjustment

The standard differentialofthe singlefloatMo delT20 may be fieldadjusted.Ad justmentmay be necessaryif a widerdifferentialneedsto be setto overcome switch chattercaused by the process. The differential,orthe am ountofleveltravelbetw een switch-on and switch-off,may be adjusted by repositioning thelowerjam nutson the floatstem .T he standard factory settingisfora m inimum am ountofplay(gap) between thetop jam nutsand theattraction sleeveasshow n in Figure 6. NOT E: For assistance in com puting level differential change for a specific control, consult the factory givingthe mo del and serialnumb ers ofthe control. C aution: Max imum differentialadjustmentis0.50 inch. NOT E: To w iden the differential0.50 inch, the lowe r jam nuts m ust be setproportionately low eron thestem (i.e.,inthis examp le 0.50 inch). C aution: Beforeattempting any wo rk on the control,pulldiscon - nect sw itch, or otherw ise assure thatelectricalcircuit(s) through the controlisdeactivated.Close operating m edi - um supply valve on controls equipped with pneuma tic switchm echanism s. 1. Determine what changeindifferentialisnecessary. 2. Make sure powersource isturned off. 3. U nscrew and rem oveswitch housing cover. 4. Disconnectpow ersupplyw iresfrom switch mechanism. Perform system shut-dow n proceduresasrequired to relievepressurefrom tank orvesseland drain offliquid head,ifrequired.Allow unitto cool. NOT E: The amo unt ofleveltravelbetween switch-on and switch-off actuation (differential)m ay be field adjusted by repositioning the lowe r jam nuts on the float stem. The standard factory setting is for a m inim um am ount of play (gap)between the top jam nutsand the attraction sleeve,as show n inFigure 6. This setting ma y be increased to a max imum of 0.50" (13 m m ),as show n in Figure 7. 6. With switch housing and enclosing tube remo ved,jam nutsand attraction sleeveareaccessible.Me asure position ofupperjam nutsfrom stem end; then loosenand remo ve upperjam nuts,guide w asher,and attraction sleeve. 8. Loosen and adjustlow erjam nutsto desiredposition. Make certain jam nutsare retightened securely. N OTE: Use new enclosing tube gasketinassemb lyofswitchhousing to the m ounting bushing or flange.R efer to Sections5.4.1.1 and 5.4.2.1 forenclosing tube gasketpartnumb ers. 9. T estswitchactuation by varying liquidlevelintankor vessel. Cau tion: Instructions given areforstandardbase mo delunitswhich use a single m agnetsw itch m echanism only.N o differen - tialadjustmentshould be attemptedon tandem floatm od - els in the field.Sw itch actuation levelshave been set at the factory to m eet specific custome r specifications. Variations in actual conditions from design conditions usually requires special controlm odifications. C onsult withthefactoryor localrepresentativeforassistance. For access to bottom jam nuts, mark position, remove top jam nuts, washer, and attracting sleeve. Therefore,a system atic program of“preventivemainte - nance”mu stbe imp lemented w hen thecontrolisplaced into service.Ifthefollow ing sections on “w hatto do” and “what toavoid”are observed,yourcontrolw illprovide reliableprotection ofyourequipme ntform any years.

4.1 Wha ttodo

4.1.1 K eep controlclean

Be sure theswitch housing coverisalwaysin placeon the control.T hiscoverisdesigned to keep dustand dirtfrom interfering withswitchmechanism operation.In addition, itprotectsagainstdamaging mo istureand actsasa safety feature by keeping barew iresand terminalsfrom being exposed.Shouldthe housing coverorany sealsbecome damaged orm isplaced,obtain a replacementimme diately.

4.1.2 Inspectswitch me chanisms ,terminals,and

Switchesshouldbe inspected forexcessivew earon actuating leverorm isalignme ntofadjustme ntscrew atpointof contactbetween screw and lever.Such w earcan causefalse switch actuating levels.See switch m echanism bulletin supplied withcontrolshouldswitch adjustmen tor replaceme ntbe necessary. 2. DO NO T operate yourcontrolw ith defectiveormal- adjusted switch m echanism s(refertobulletinon switch m echanism sfurnished forserviceinstructions.) 3. Levelcontrolsmay sometimes be exposed to excessiveheat orm oisture.U ndersuch conditions,insulation on electri - calwiring may becom e brittle,eventuallybreaking or pealing away.T he resulting “bare” w irescan cause short circuits. NO TE: C heck w iring carefully and replace at the firstsignof brittle insulation. 4. Vibration m aysome times cause term inalscrewsto w ork loose.Check allterm inalconnections to be certainthat screwsaretight.

O n unitsw ithpneumatic switches,air(orgas)linessub - jected tovibration,m ayeventuallycrack orbecome loose atconnections causing leakage.Check linesand connec - tionscarefullyand repairorreplace,ifnecessary. N OTE: As a m atterofgood practice,spareswitches should be kept on hand atalltimes.

4.1.3 Inspectentireunitperiodically

4.2 Wha ttoavoid

Ne verattem pttomake adjustm entsorreplace switches withoutreading instructionscarefully.Certainadjustments provided forinlevelcontrolsshouldnotbe attemptedin thefield.W hen indoubt,consultthe factoryoryourlocal representative. 4. Ne veruselubricantson pivotsofswitch me chanisms. A sufficientam ountoflubricanthasbeen applied atthe factorytoensure a lifetim e ofservice.Furtheroiling is unnecessaryand w illonlytend to attractdustand dirt which can interfere with m echanism operation.

5.1 Troubleshooting

Usuallythefirstindication ofimproperoperation isfailure ofthecontrolled equipme ntto function,(i.e.:pump w ill notstart(orstop),signallampsfailto light,etc.)Whe n thesesymp toms occur,w hetherattime ofinstallation or during routine servicethereafter,check thefollowing potentialexternalcausesfirst. a.Fusesm aybe blown. b.Resetbutton(s) m ayneed resetting. c.Pow erswitch m aybe open. d.Co ntrolled equipmen tm aybe faulty. e.W iring leading tocontrolm aybe defective. Ifa thorough inspection ofthesepossibleconditionsfails tolocatethe trouble,proceed nexttoa check ofthe control'sswitch m echanism.

5.1.1 Che ck switch me chanism

  1. Pulldisconnectswitch orotherwise disconnectpow erto thecontrol. 2. Rem oveswitchhousing cover. 3. Disconnectpow erwiring from switch assem bly. 4. Swing m agnetassem blyin and outby hand tocheck care - fullyforany sign ofbinding.A ssembly shouldrequire minimalforcetom oveitthrough itsfullswing. 5. Ifbinding exists,magn etm aybe rubbing enclosing tube. Ifm agnetisrubbing,loosenmagn etclamp screw and shift magn etposition.R etighten magn etclamp screw. 6. Ifswitch m agnetassembly sw ingsfreelyand mechanism stillfailstoactuate,check installation ofcontroltobe certainitisw ithin the specified threedegreesofvertical. (Use spiritlevelon side ofenclosing tube in tw o places, 90° apart. 7. Check thecontinuityofthe microsw itch w ith ohmme ter. Replace imme diatelyiffound defective. 8. Ifswitch m echanism isoperating satisfactorily,proceedto check sensingunit.

5.1.2 Che ck com pleteunit

  1. Reconnectpowersupplyand carefullyactuate switch me chanism man ually(using a non-conductivetool)to determ ine whethercontrolled equipmen tw illoperate. Cau tion: W ithelectricalpow er on,care should be taken to avoid contact w ith sw itch leads and connections at terminal block. 2. Ifcontrolledequipmentrespondstom anualactuation test, troublemay be located in the levelsensing portionofthe control–float(s),stem(s),and magn etic attraction sleeve(s). N OTE: Ensure that liquid is entering the storage tank or vessel. A valvem ay be closed ora pipe line plugged. Cau tion: Be certain to pulldisconnect switchor otherwise ensure that electrical circuit(s)through control is deactivated. Close operating me dium supp ly valve on controls equipped w ithpneum atic sw itch me chanisms. 3. With liquidin tank orvessel,raisethe liquid levelabove thesetpoints.Magn etsshould“pull-in” on rising level.On Mo delT21 thelowerfloatactuatesthe upperswitch,and theupperfloatactuatesthelow erswitch.Ifmagnetsfailto “pull-in”,lowertheleveland purgepressure. a. D isconnectwiring from supplyside ofswitch me cha - nism (s) and remo veelectricalconduitoroperating me dium lineconnectionstoswitch housing. b. Rem oveswitchhousing assembly by looseninghex nut, which islocated imme diatelybelow housing base. 4. With switch housing assembly rem oved,inspectattraction sleeve(s) and insideofenclosing tube forexcessivecorro - sion orsolidsbuildup,w hich couldrestrictmo vement, preventingsleeve(s)from reaching fieldofswitchmag - net(s). 5. Ifdifferentialhasbeen changed in the fieldby reposition - ingthelowerjam nutson the floatstem ,checktightness and position ofthe jam nuts.RefertoFigure6. N OTE: Differentialadjustmentaffectsa change intheamo unt oflevel travel between switch-on and sw itch-offactuation. Do not attempt adjustment w ithout firstconsulting factory for assis - tance in com puting leveldifferentialchange foryourcontrol.
