Amphenol black zinc nickel plating is an alloy of zinc and nickel with a non-relective black finish. It is blackened by immersion in a chromate passivate solution forming a layer comprising of various protective zinc and nickel chromates and oxides. Amphenol black zinc nickel does not contain cadmium, lead, mercury, PBBs, or PBDEs. Compliance with hexavalent chrome requirements have been verified by an independent test laboratory using the boiling water extraction tests specified in IEC 62321. Amphenol black zinc nickel plating has the same thickness as cadmium so maintains the mechanical integrity of the plated connector and does not require new drawings, tooling or gauges. Amphenol have invested in infrastructure and equipment to ensure a fully production ready, repeatable process providing our customers with consistent product performance. Testing has been performed to demonstrate that there is no significant galvanic erosion when mating Amphenol black zinc nickel plated connectors with legacy components plated with cadmium or electoless nickel. The mating of Amphenol black zinc nickel plated connectors with cadmium or electroless nickel connectors is nevertheless let under the user’s responsibility, as himself only knows the applications of equipment as well as the environment where it will be used.
