  • Extremelylow dielectric med ia( εr<2.0)
  • Very weak reflections from the liquid surface— particularly during turbulence can causepoor per - formance.
  • Tanks heavilycluttered withfalse targets(mixers, pumps, ladders,pipes,etc.)
  • During times of verylow liquid levelsof low dielec - tricmedia, the metaltank bottom m ay be detected deterioratingperformance.
  • Foam can eitherabsorb or reflectthemicrowave energy depending upon the depth, dielectric, density and w allthickness ofthe bubbles.Due totypical variations inthe am ount(depth)offoam, itis impossible toquantifyperformance.Itmay be possible toreceivemo st,some or none of the transm ittedenergy.
  • Extrem elyhigh liquidlevel(Overflow)conditions wh en liquidvery nearthe antenna can cause erroneous readings and m easurem entfailure. RefertoECLIPSE Gu ided W ave Rada r bulletin 57-101. M I X E R S A N D B L E N D I N G V E S S E L S CONDIT IONS – Turbulence,Foam ,and Chan ging Dielectric

P U L S E B U R S T R A D A R PULSA R is a top-mounted,downw ard-lookingpulseburst radar operatingat5.8 GHz (Europe)or 6.3 GHz (North Am erica).Unliketrue pulse devices(ECLI PSE Guided Wave Rad ar)which transmita single, sharp (fastrise-time)wave - form of wide-band energy (Figure 1),PULSAR emitsshort burstsof5.8 or 6.3 GHz energy (Figure 2)and m easures thetransittime of thesignalreflectedoffthe liquidsurface. Distance iscalculatedutilizing the equation Distanceequals theSpeed of lightmu ltiplied by the transittime divided by two ( Distance =C × Transit Tim e/2 ),then developingthe levelvalueby factoring intank heightand sensoroffset information (Figure3).The exactreferencepointfordis - tance and levelcalculations isthe sensor reference point (bottom of an NPT thread, top of a BSP thread,or faceof a flange). The exactlevelmeasuremen tis extractedfrom falsetarget reflections and otherbackground noiseviatheuse of sophisticatedsignalprocessing. The new PULSA R circuitry isextremely energy efficientso no dutycycling isneces - sarytoaccomplisheffectivemeasuremen t.For thisreason PULSAR can trackhighrates ofchange (180inches [450 cm ] per minute)thatwere heretoforeimpossiblewithexisting loop-pow ered radar transm itters. ETS ,or EquivalentTime Samp ling, isused tom easurethe high speed, low power EM (electromagn etic)energy.ETS isa criticalkey in theapplication ofR adarto vessellevel mea surement technology. The highspeed EM energy (1000 ft/µs)isdifficulttomeasure overshortdistancesand atthe resolution required inthe processindustry.ETS capturesthe EM signalsin realtime (nanoseconds)and reconstructs them in equivalenttime(milliseconds),which ismuch easier tomeasure w ith today’stechnology. ETS isaccomplishedby scanning the vesselto collect thousands of samples. The round-trip eventon a 6 5 -foot (20 meter)tanktakes only133nanoseconds inrealtime. Af teritisreconstructedin equivalenttimeitm easures 200 milliseconds. E Q U I V A L E N T T I M E S A M P L I N G Distance = c × (time ÷ 2) 1 ns 500 ns Figure1 Figure 2 Pulse Pulse Burst
