300mA Low Noise Dual LDO PL2211 OPERATION DESCRIPTION The PL2211 ar e ultra-low-noise, low-d ropout, l ow- quiescent c urrent l inear re gulators designed for space- restricted applications. These devices can supply loads up to 300mA. As shown in the Block Diagram, the PL2211 consists of a highly accurate band gap core, noise bypass circuit, er ror amplifier, P-c hannel pass transistor and an internal fee dback v oltage divider. T he 1.0V ba nd gap reference is c onnected t o th e er ror am plifier’s in verting input. Th e erro r am plifier co mpares this refere nce with the feedback voltage and amplifies the difference. If th e feedback voltage is lower t han the reference voltage, the pass tran sistor g ate is p ulled low. Th is allows m ore current t o pass t o t he output an d in creases th e output voltage. I f t he feed back voltage i s t oo high, t he pass transistor g ate is p ulled high, allowing less cu rrent to pass t o t he output. The output voltage i s feed back through an internal resistor voltage divider connected to the OUT pin. An external bypass capacitor connected to BYP re duces n oise at t he o utput. A dditional blocks include a cu rrent li miter, ov er tem perature protection, and shutdown logic. Internal P-Channel Pass Transistor The PL2211 feature a 1Ω (typ) P-channel MOSFET pass transistor. This provides several advantages over sim ilar designs using a PNP pass transistor, i ncluding l onger battery life. Th e P-ch annel M OSFET re quires no base drive, which considerably red uces qu iescent curren t. PNP-based regulators waste considera ble current i n dropout when the pass transistor saturates. They also use high base-drive current under heavy loads. The PL2211 does not su ffer from t hese p roblems and c onsume onl y 200µA of quiescent current in light load. Current Limit The PL221 1 in cludes a curren t li miter. It m onitors th e output c urrent and co ntrols t he pa ss t ransistor’s gate voltage to limit th e ou tput cu rrent under 550mA (typ). The o utput can be shorted to gr ound f or an indefinite amount of time without damaging the part. Enable Input The PL2211 features a n acti ve-high En able in put (EN) pin th at allows on /off con trol o f t he regulator. Th e PL2211 bias current reduces to less than microampere of leakage current when it is shu tdown. The Enable input is TTL/CMOS compatible threshold for simple logic interfacing. When EN is ‘H,’ th e ou tput vo ltage startup rising t ime i s 35 us t ypically at 300mA output c urrent. Connect EN pin to IN pin for normal operation Under Voltage Lockout When t he inpu t supp ly go es to o low (below 2.0V ) th e PL2211 produces an in ternal UV LO (under vo ltage lockout) si gnal t hat ge nerates a fa ult si gnal an d shuts down t he c hip. T his m echanism pr otects t he c hip from producing false logic due to low input supply. Quick Charging Mode The PL2211 has a quick charge block to get the reference up very quickly by charging the BYP capacitor with very high current when the chip comes out of shut down. This quick c harge block st ops c harging t he B YP ca pacitor when the reference reaches 95% of its nominal value and then t he ch ip switches out of qu ick ch arging m ode t o normal operating mode. Over Temperature Protection Over tem perature protection li mits t otal power dissipation i n t he PL2211. When t he junction temperature e xceeds T j= + 155°C, th e therm al sen sor signals t he shutdown l ogic an d t urns off t he pass transistor. The thermal sensor turns the pass transistor on again after the IC’s junction temperature drops by 15°C, resulting in a pulsed output during co ntinuous th ermal- overload conditions. Thermal-Overload protection is design to pro tect t he PL2211 i n th e ev ent of a fault con dition. For con tinual operation, do not exceed the absolute maximum junction temperature rating of Tj = +150°C. Operating Region and Power Dissipation The PL2211 maximum power dissipation depends on 1) the thermal resistance of the case and circuit board, 2) the temperature differe nce between the die junction and ambient, and 3) the rate of airflow. The power dissipation across the device is: P = Iout ( Vin – Vout ) The maximum power dissipation is: Pmax = (Tj – Ta) / (θjc + θca) Where (Tj – Ta) is the temperature difference between the PL 2211 die junction a nd the am bient air; θjc is th e thermal resistance of the package; and θca is the thermal Power IC Ltd. - 5 - www.picsemi.com Version 1.0 Mar 4, 2007
300mA Low Noise Dual LDO PL2211 resistance through the PC board, copper traces, and other materials to the surrounding air. The GND pin of the PL2211 performs the dual function of providing an electr ical co nnection to g round and channeling heat away. Connect t he G ND pin t o ground using a large pad or ground plane. Noise Reduction For t he PL2211, an ex ternal 0 .01µF by pass capacitor between BY P and GND w ith inno vative noise bypass scheme red uces ou tput noises dram atically, ex hibiting 100µVrms of output voltage noise with Cbyp = 0.01µF and Cout = 1µF.
APPLICATION INFORMATION
Capacitor Selection and Regulator Stability Use a 1 µF cap acitor on t he PL22 11 input an d a 1 µF capacitor on the output. Large input capacitor values and lower ESR s provide better noi se rejection a nd l ine- transient response. Reduce output noise and improve load-transient response, stability, an d power-supp ly rej ection by u sing larg e output ca pacitors. Note that som e ceram ic dielectrics exhibit larg e cap acitance an d ESR variation with temperature. With dielectrics suc h as Z5U and Y5V, it may be necessary to use a 1µF or larger output capacitor to en sure stabilit y at tem peratures b elow -10°C. W ith X7R or X5R dielectrics, 1µF is sufficient at all operating temperatures. A gra ph of the region of stable Cout ESR vs. load current is shown in the Typical Characteristics. Use a 0.01µF by pass capac itor at B YP f or l ow-output voltage noi se. The leakage cu rrent go ing into t he B YP pin should be less than 10nA. Noise, PSRR, and Transient Response The PL2211 are designed to deliver ultra-low noise and high PSR R, a s wel l as l ow dr opout an d low quiescent currents in bat tery-powered systems. The PL2211 PSRR is 70 dB at 100Hz an d 60dB at 10 kHz ( see t he P ower- Supply R ejection R atio vs. Fre quency g raph i n t he Typical Characteristic). When operating from sou rces ot her t han bat teries, improved supp ly-noise rejection an d tr ansient r esponse can be achieved by increasing the values of the input and output bypass cap acitors, an d throug h p assive filtering techniques. The Typical Characteristics show the PL2211 line and load transient responses. Dropout Voltage A reg ulator’s minimum d ropout vo ltage determines th e lowest usable supply voltage. In battery-powered systems, this d etermines th e u seful en d-of-life b attery v oltage. Because t he PL2211 use a P-c hannel M OSFET pass transistor, their dropout voltage is a fu nction of drain-to- source on resistan ce (RDS(on)) m ultiplied b y th e lo ad current (see the Typical Characteristics).
