1.1 Principleof Operation

The key elementsofthe Mod ulevel pneumaticcontrolarethe magnetic coupling, which allow sthe controller tobe m echanicallyisolated from the sealed sensing unit;the rangespring, whichconvertsthe change inbuoyancy force on the displacerinto mo tion;and thecontrollerhead, which providesa mod ulated pneum atic signalin direct proportiontothe mo tion ofthespring.

1.2 O peratingCycle

The resultofliquidlevelchangesin thevesselisa change in the buoyancy force acting on the displacerand inthe loadon thespring from which thedis - placerissuspended. As the spring extendsorcom pressesw ith thechange in load,an attraction ballattachedto thespring viaa stem assembly moves withintheenclosing tube. A magn etencircling the enclosing tubefollow stheattraction ball,trans - ferring them otion to a rotating cam, which in turn operatesa flapper againsta nozzlew hich increasesor decreasesthe pressure w ithin thepneu - matic relay. 1.3.1.1 ProportionalCon trol

Proportionalcontrolinstrumentsareusedto maintain thelevelina tank w ithin a predetermined band. T he outputfrom the M odulevelhead controlsthe opening and closingofa valveto controltheincreaseor decreaseoftheliquid flow through the vessel.

1.3.1.2 Transmitter

T ransmittersprovide a pneumatic signalproportional tothe levelofa liquid. The signalcanbe fed toa varietyofdevicesastheapplication requires.

1.3.1.3 Transmitter/ReceiverC ontroller

Thereare two devicesin thisversion. T he transmitter sensesleveldirectly atthe vessel, and providesa pneu - ma tic signaltothe receiver/controller.The receiver/ controlleroperatesinthesame man nerasa direct connected leveldevice,such asa proportionalcon - troller,which allowsvarying the proportionalband and levelsetpoint. T hisunitm ay be mou nted either integrallywith thetransmitter,orata more convenientrem otelocation.

1.3.1.4 ProportionalPlus IntegralC ontrol

Proportionalplusintegralcontrolinstrumen ts(i.e., with reset) operate in thesame m annerasthe propor - tionalunitwith one m ajordifference. T he offset between thedesiredleveland the actualleveliselimi - nated, thusm aintaining the levelata pointrather thanwithina band.

1.3.1.5 D ifferentialGap

A differentialgap instrum entprovidestwo distinctoutputs, eitheropened orclosed.On e distinctoutputvalue is obtained wh en the levelexceedsthe upperswitching point. Th isvalue remainsconstantuntilthe leveldecreasesbelow the lowerswitching point. A tthistime the controller changesto anotherdistinctoutputvalue.Th e new value rem ainsconstantuntilthelevelagainrisesabove the upper switching pointcausing the outputvaluetoreturntothe firstoutputvalue.Th e distance betweenthe two switching pointsiscalledthe differentialgap.

2.1 Unpa cking

Afterunpacking,inspectallthe comp onentsto see thatno dam agehasoccurred during shipmen t. Care shouldbe taken notto bend thedisplacerstem orenclosing tube during unpacking orinstallation. Next,open controllercase and remove magnethold down and nozzleleverretainers. Examine internalcontrollercompon ents forany obviousdamage orloosened parts.C heckallaircon - nectionstomake certaintheyarefreeofany foreign matter.

2.1.1 P51, P61,P62 and APM 131 Mo dels

T op m ounting M odulevelunitsareshipped from thefactory with thecontrollerand displacerremoved from the head assembly and packed separatelyin the same carton orcrate.

2.1.2 P53, P55, P63,P64,P66,P71,P72,A PM-W251,

APM-W 254 and APM-W 291 Mo dels All cagetype M odulevelunitsare shipped w iththe controller rem oved from the cham berassemblyand packed separately inthe sam e carton orcrate. A strap and w ire assembly retainsand protectsthe displacer within the chamber during shipmen t. T he assembly must be remo vedthrough the bottomconnection beforestart-up. Ca ution: Ifres hi pping to another location, displacer assem bly must againbe secured usingsam e strapand wireassem bly.

2.1.3 P68 Mo dels

The side mo unting M odulevelunitsareshipped w iththe controllerand floatand stem assembly removed from the body and are packed separatelyin the same carton orcrate. Afterunpacking,inspectallcom ponentsto seethatno dam agehasoccurred during shipmen t. Figure5

2.2 Mounting

Be fore assem bling controlto vessel,check w ith spiritlevel toensure thatthem ounting flange ishorizontal.Proper operation ofthecontroldependson the Mo dulevelcon - trollerbeing within3° ofverticalin alldirections.T he headassem blywithsensing comp onentsisinstalled first, then the controllerisplaced carefullyoverthe enclosing tube,rotated todesired position, and then locked in place by securelytightening the locking screw. Chec k to be cer - tain thecontrollerm agnetcanmove smo othlythroughout itsactuating stroke withoutbinding againstthe enclosing tube. Ifbinding occurs,loosen the slot-head screw, reposi - tion m agnetand tightenscrew. C aution: The spring and stem assemb ly that protrudes below them ounting flange on a top m ounted Mo dulevelisvery fragile.DO N OT handle thisassem blyor place controlso thatany amo untofforceisexerted on thespringand stem assem bly. Proper operation of the controlrequires that this assem bly is notdam aged orbent. NO TE: Stillw ellinstallation shouldbe checked tobe cer - tain tube (orpipe)is plum b.An out-of-plum b still well may restrictdisplacermovement . Also, ensure that the stillwe llis vented at the top to allow the liquid to rise in the tube with level mo veme nt. Figure 6 show sa typicalpiping installation for a top mou nted unitto a tank orvessel.

2.2.2 ExternalC age Mo dels – A PM-W251, A PM-

W 254, A PM-W291, P53, P55, P63,P64, P65, P66,P71 and P72 The externalcagetype M odulevelshouldbe mo untedon the side ofthetank orvesselwith eitherside/side connectionsorside/bottom connections, asshow n in Figure7 . Mi d-range mark on controlcageshouldbe aligned to correspond w ith desired controllevelintank orvessel. NO TE: Itis essentialthattheexternalcage assem bly be mo unted plum b to ensure frictionless operation ofitsinternaldisplacer. Itisrecomme nded thatisolation valvesbe installedin eachequalizing line to thecageas wellasa drain valveatthe bottom ofthe cham ber(referto Figure 7). Equalizinglines shouldbe sized atleastaslarge asconnections provided on the cage. NO TE: R efertopage 49 fordetailed assembly ofreceivercontrollerto a transmittertypeMo dulevelcontroller. 2.3 Calibration

2.3.1 ProportionalCo ntrollers

Each M odulevelcontroliscalibrated atthefactory before shipment. Specified actionshavebeen preset and allscaleshavebeen calibrated. H owever,upon receiptoftheinstrume ntthefollow ing calibration and adjustmentprocedure isrecomm ended forall controllers: 1. Che ck supplypressure: Afterappropriate piping hasbeen m adetothe filterregulatorand outputconnections,and checked forleaks, the supplygauge, shown in Figure 9, shouldindicate 20 psig (35psig for 6–30 psig controllers). 2. Che ck controlaction: T ocheck controlleraction, man uallyrotatethe magn etcarriageto simulate an increasein level. Note the direction ofthe outputpressure change. (Rising levelw illincreasethe output pressure on directacting controllers. Con versely, rising levelwilldecreasetheoutput pressure on the reverse acting controllers.)The action cam and leveladjustme ntknob mu st both indicate the same action Shoulditbe required to change the controller action, the action cam can be m anuallyrotated 180° tothe desired action. Make certainthat thenotch in the cam issetinto the tabofthe pilotnozzleassembly. Cam actionsare clearly marked on thecam faceasindicated inFigure 10. A zeroadjustmentw illnormallybe required upon change. N OT E: Itis also im portant that the leveladjustment knob scale action be com patible w iththe cam action.The level adjustme nt knob scale is printed D IRECT AC TION on one side and R EVER SE AC TION on the other.To change scales,remo ve leveladjustment knob and turnover levelscale.R eplace knob with sam e orientation on shaftas beforeremoval. 3. Che ck levelindicatorzero setting. A levelindicatorisfurnished w ith each Mo dulevelpneum atic controllerand isconve - nientlylocated inside the instrume ntcase. The levelindicator,show n in Figure 11,indicates thelevelasa percentageofthe displacerlength. A n adjustme ntis provided on the levelindicatortocalibratethepointerand indicatorscale wh en controlisatoperating temp erature. M agnetrol will repair or replace the control at no cost to the purchaser (or owner) other than transportation if: 1. Returned within the warranty period; and 2. Th e factory inspection finds the cause of the claim to be covered under the warranty. Return M aterial Procedure So that we m ay efficiently process any materials that are returned, it is e ssential that a “Return Ma terial Aut horization” (RM A ) num ber be obtained from the factory, prior to the m aterial’s return. This is available through M agnetrol’s l ocal r epresentative or by contacting the factory. Please supply the follow ing inform ation: 1. Com pany Name 2. D escription of M aterial 3. Serial Num ber 4. Reason for R eturn 5. Application Any unit that was used in a process must be properly cleaned in accordance with O SHA standards, before it is returned to the factory. A Mat erial Safety Data Sheet (M SD S) must accompany material that w as used in any m edia. All shipments returned to the factory must be by prepaid transportation.
