DIFFERE NT IAL ADJUSTMENT The amou ntofleveltravelbetween “switchon” and “switch off” can be reduced from the m aximum factory settingby raising the low er setof jam nuts.Minimum free play(differ - ential)ofm agneticsleeve is1⁄32 ". 1. Disconnect wiringfrom supp lyside of switch me cha - nism and electricalconduit or operating m edium line connections to switchhousing. 2. Perform system shut-down as requiredto relievepres - sure from tank or vesseland drain offliqu id “head” above controlmo untingposition.Allowunittocool. 3. Re move sw itchhousingassem blyby loosening enclos - ing tube nut located immed iately below housing base. Re fertoFigure8 on page 7. 4. W ith switch housing remo ved,jam nuts and mag netic sleeve are now accessible, as show n in Figure 6. R aisingthelowerjam nuts willreduce thedifferential.As the firststep inany adjustment procedure,the position ofthe upper and lowerjam nuts shouldbe established. NEVER C H ANG E SETTI NG OF UPPER JAM NUTS AS THEY SUP POR T FLOAT ASSEM BLY SO THA T IT CA N - NOT TOUCH B OTT OM OF CHAM BER. 5. Loosen and remove upp er jam nuts,guide w asher,and m agneticsleeve.Lowerjam nuts may now be adjusted to reduce thedifferential. NO TE: Be certain totighten jam nuts securelyafteradjustme nt. 6. Replace ma gnetic sleeve on stem and position upperjam nuts to theiroriginalsetting.Lock upperjam nuts to guide w asher. 7. Reassem ble controlin reverse ofsteps 1 through 3,previ - ouslydescribed. 8. Testswitch actuationby varying liquidlevelintankorvessel. Therefore,a systematicprogram of “Preventive Maintenance” should be implem ented wh en controlis placedinto service.Ifthe following sectionson “What To Do” and “Wh atTo Avoid” areobserved,yourcontrolw illprovidereliableprotection ofyourcapitalequipme nt. What To Do 1. K eep Co ntrolClean — B e sure the switchhousing cover is alw ays inplace on the control.Thiscover isdesigned to keep mois - ture laden airand corrosive gases as wellas dirt aw ay from the switchmech anism.In addition,itacts as a safetyfeatureby keeping bare wires and termi - nalsfrom being exposed.B e surecover istightened allthew ay dow n toensurecom pressionofquad ring seal.Should the housingcover becom e damaged or misplaced,ordera replacementimme diately. 2. Inspect Switch Me ch an isms, Te rmina ls, and Con nections M onthly — Switches shouldbe inspected forexcessive wear on actuating lever or m isalignment of adjustmentscrew at pointof contact betwee n screw and lever.Su ch w earcan cause falseswitchactuating levels. D o NO T operateyourcontrolwithdefectiveor maladjusted sw itch me chanisms (referto bulletinon switchm echanism furnished forserviceinstructions). — Mag netrolcontrols ma y sometimes be exposed to excessive heat or moisture.U nder such conditions, insulation on electricalwires may become brittle, eventuallybreaking or peelingawa y.The resulting “bare” w ires can cause shortcircuits.Ch eck w iring carefully and replace atfirstsignorbrittleinsulation. — Vibration may sometim es cause terminalscrews to w ork loose. Check allterminalconn ections to be certain thatscrews aretight. W hatTo A void 1. N EVER leave switch housing cover off the control longerthannecessarytom ake routineinspections. 2. NE VER use lubricationon pivotsofswitchmechanisms. A sufficientam ount of lubricanthas been appliedatthe factory to ensure a lifetime of service.Further oiling is unnecessaryand willonlytend to attractdust and dirt which can interferewithm echanism operation. 3. NE VER place a jumper wire across terminalsto “cut- out” the control.If a “jumper”isnecessaryfortestpur - poses,be certainitisremoved before placingcontrol intoservice. 4. NE VER attempttom ake adjustmentsorreplaceswitch - es withoutreadinginstructionscarefully.Certainadjust - m entsprovidedforinMagnetrolcontrolsshouldnot be attempted in thefield.W hen indoubt,consultthefactory oryourlocalrepresentative.
Us uallythefirstindication ofimproperoperationisfailureof the controlled equipmentto function,i.e.pump willnot start (or stop),signallights failto light,etc.When these occur, wh etherattime ofinstallationorduringroutineservicethere - after,check the followingpotentialexternalcauses first. — Fuses m ay be blown. — R esetbutton(s)m ay need resetting. — Po w erswitch m ay be open. — C ontrolled equipmentm ay be faulty. — W iring lines leadingtocontrolmay be defective. If a thorough inspectionofthesepossibleconditions failsto locate the trouble,proceed next to a check of the controls sw itch m echanism. 1. Pulldisconnect switch or otherwiseassure thatelectri - calcircuit(s)through controldeactivated. 2. Re move sw itch housing cover. 3. Sw ing mag net assemb ly in and out by hand to check carefully for any sign of binding.Assembly should require a minimum of forceto mo ve itthrough its full sw ing. 4 . If binding exists,m agnet may be rubbing enclosingtube or pivot sockets may be overly tight.Read just pivot socketsas required untila slightam ount of sideplayis evident.If magn et is rubbing, loosen ma gnet clamp screw and shiftma gnetposition. 5. Ifsw itchmag netassem blyswings freelyand mechanism stillfailsto actuate,check installationof controlto be certain itiswithinthe specifiedthree degrees ofvertical (usespiritlevelon sideof enclosing tube in two places, 90° apart). 6. Check the continuityof m icroswitch with ohmm eter. Re place immed iatelyifdefective. NOTE :As a ma tterofgood practice,spare switchesshould be kepton hand atalltimes. If switch m echanism isoperatingsatisfactorily,a testofthe comp letecontrolsperforman ce isthenextlikelystep. 1. Re connec t power supply and carefullyactuateswitch me chanism ma nually(using a nonconduc tive tool)to determine wh ethercontrolledequipmen tw illoperate. 2. If controlled equipme nt responds to m anualactuation test,troublemay be locatedinthe levelsensingportion of the control (float,stem, and mag neticattraction sleeve). NOTE :Ch eck firstto be certainrefrigerant isenteringfloat ch amb er.A valve ma y be closed or pipe line plugged. 3. D epressurize and rem ove E-tube, proceed to check levelsensingactionby removingswitchhousingassem - bly,as described in “DifferentialAdjustment” instruc - tions. 4. Inspect attraction sleeve and inside of enclosing tube forexcessive corrosionor solidsbuildupwhich could restrictm ovem ent,preventing sleevefrom reachingfield ofswitchm agnet. 5. If differentialadjustment has been changed inthe filed by repositioningthe lower jam nuts on the floatstem, check fortightnessand positionofthejam nuts. NOTE :Differentialad justment affects a change in the am ount of level travelbetween “switch-on” and “switch-off”actuations.Do NOT attemptadjustment without first consulting factory for assistance in compu tingleveldifferentialchange foryourcontrol. 6. Check float to be certainitisbuoyant inthe refrigerant (floatcham ber m ust have adequate refrigerantlevel).If floatisdeterminedtobe filledwithliquidor collapsed,it m ustbe replaceimm ediately.Do NOT attem ptto repair a float. If allcom ponents inthe controlare inoperatingcondition, the troublemust be (andshouldbe)locatedexternallytothe control.R epeat inspectionofexternalconditionspreviously described. NOTE :W hen indoubt about the conditionor performance of a Magnetrolcontrol,return itto the factory.See “ServicePolicy”on the back page.
