Magne trol'sB40 levelswitchesarespecificallydesigned for extrem elyhighpressure,hightem peratureservice conditions found principallyinpowerplants,petroleum and petro - chemicalrefineries,and nuclearpow erinstallations. Ca ution: Ifequipmentis used ina ma nnernot specifiedby ma nufac - turer,protection provided by equipment ma y be impaired.

1.1 PrincipleofOperation

The designofM agnetrolfloat-operated levelswitchesis based upon the principlethata magn etic fieldwill“see through” non-magneticmaterialssuch as316 stainlesssteel. In thiscase,the floatmo vesa magn eticattraction sleeve(1) withina non-m agnetic enclosing tube (2) and actuates a switch m echanism (3).T he enclosing tube providesa pressure sealtothechambe rand,therefore,to the process.

1.2 OperatingCycle

As theliquid leveldecreasesinthechambe r,referto Figure 1, the floatm ovesthe magn etic attraction sleeveup, withintheenclosingtube,and intothe fieldofthe switch me chanism magn et.As a result,the magn etisdrawn in tightlytotheenclosing tube causing the switch totrip, “m aking” or“breaking” an electricalcircuit.Asthe liquid levelrises,the floatm ovesthe attraction sleeveoutofthe magn eticfield,releasingthe switch ata predetermined low level(see Figure 2) .The tension spring ensuresthereturn of theswitch in a snap action.

2.1 Unpa cking

Unp ackthe instrum entcarefully,inspecting fordamage. 2.2 Piping

Figure 3 show sa typicalpiping installation ofa Mode lB40 ina pipelineto a pressurevessel.Reference lines,on float cham ber,shouldbe aligned to correspond w ith liquid level inthe vesselatwhich switch controlisdesired (referto dime nsionaldrawing,iffurnished).U se pipeofsufficient strength to supporttheunit.Ifnecessary,provide a stand orhangertohelp supportitsweight.Allpipingshouldbe straightand freeoflow spotsorpocketsso thatthelower liquidlinewilldraintowardsthevesseland the uppervapor linewilldraintowardsthe control.Pipelineshouldbe insulat - ed,asshown, tom inimizelossofliquidtempe ratureand furthercontroloftheheatinthearea oftheswitchhousing. DO NOT insulate switch housingorfloatcham ber. NO TE: Manu facturer recom m ends that whe n we lding chrome -moly steelpiping,the procedures used conform toAWS- D10.8-61. 2.3 Mounting

Before welding,adjustpiping to bring controltoa vertical position.B40 levelcontrolsrequirethatthe enclosingtube be mo unted withinthree degreesofverticalin alldirections. 2.4 Wiring

Ca ution: Levelcontrolsareshippedfromthe factorywith theenclosing tube tightened and the middle set screw,on the housing base,locked to the enclosing tube.Failuretoloosen the set screw priorto repositioning the conduitconnectionmay cause the enclosing tube to loosen,resultinginthe possible leakage ofthe process liquidorvapor. Mo stB40 levelcontrolsw itch housingsare designed to allow360° positioning ofthe conduitoutletby loosening thesetscrew(s) located underthe housing base.High temp eraturew ire mu stbe used betw eencontroland first junction box located ina coolerarea. N OTE: A sw itchor circuitbreaker shallbe installed inclose proximity to equipme nt and within easy reach of operator.It shallbe m arked as thedisconnecting device forequipment. 1. 3.1 What todo

3.1.1 K eep controlclean

Be surethe switch housing coverisalwaysinplaceon the control.Thiscoverisdesigned to keep dustand dirtfrom interferingwith switch me chanism operation.In addition, itprotectsagainstdamaging m oisture,and actsasa safety feature by keeping bare wiresand terminalsfrom being exposed.Shouldthehousing coverorany sealsbecome dam aged orm isplaced,obtain a replacem entimmed iately.

3.1.2 Inspectswitch me chanisms ,terminals,and

a. Mercuryswitchesma y be visually inspected forshortcircuit dam age.C heckforsma llcracksinthe glasstube containing the m ercury.Such crackscanallow entranceofairintothe tube causingthe m ercurytooxidize.Thisisnoticeableas the m ercury willappeardirtyordull,and willnotbreak intoclean,round pools.Iftheseconditionsexist,replacethe me rcury switch imme diately. b. Dry contactswitchesshouldbe inspected forexcessivewear on actuatingleverorm isalignm entofadjustmentscrew at pointofcontactbetween screw and lever.Such w earcan cause falseswitchactuating levels.Replace switchme cha - nism ifwearorm isalignm entareapparent. 746-602 B40 LiquidLevelSwitches

c. DO NOT operate your controlw ithdefectiveorm al- adjusted switchme chanism (refertobulletinon switch me chanisms furnished forservice instructions). d. Vibration m ay som etimescauseterminalscrews to w ork loose.Check allterm inalconnectionsto m akecertain that screws are tightened. N OTE: As a m atterofgood practice,spareswitches shouldbe kepton hand atalltimes.

3.1.3 Inspectentireunitperiodically

Isolate controlfrom vessel.Raiseand lowerliquid levelto check forsw itch contactand reset.

3.2 What toavoid

  1. Neverleaveswitchhousing coveroffthecontrollongerthan necessarytom akeroutine inspections. 2. Neverplacea jum perw ire acrossterm inalsto “cut-out”the control.Ifa “jum per” isnecessaryfortestpurposes,be cer - tain itisremo ved beforeplacing controlinto service. 3. Neverattem pttom akeadjustmen tsorreplaceswitches withoutreadinginstructionscarefully.Ce rtain adjustments provided forinlevelcontrolsshouldnotbe attem ptedin thefield.Whe n indoubt,consultthefactoryoryourlocal representative. 4. Neveruse lubricantson pivotsofswitch m echanism s. 4.0 Reference Information

4.1 Troubleshooting

Usuallythefirstindication ofimproperoperation isfailure ofthecontrolled equipme ntto function,i.e.,pump w illnot start(orstop),signallampsfailtolight,etc.W hen these sym ptom soccur,whetherattime ofinstallation orduring routineservice thereafter,check the following potential externalcausesfirst. a. Fusesm ay be blown. b. Resetbutton(s) m ay need resetting. c. Powerswitch m ay be open. d. Con trolled equipmen tm ay be faulty. e. Wiringleading tocontrolmay be defective. Ifa thorough inspection ofthesepossibleconditions failsto locatethetrouble,proceed nextto a check ofthe control's switch m echanism .

4.1.1 C heck switch me chanism

  1. Pulldisconnectswitch orotherwise disconnectpowerto thecontrol. 2. Rem oveswitchhousing cover. 3. Disconnectpow erwiring from switch assembly. 4. Swingma gnetassem blyinand outby hand tocheckcarefully forany signofbinding.Assem blyshouldrequire minimal forceto m ove itthrough itsfullswing. 5. Ifbinding exists,m agnetm ay be rubbing enclosing tube. Ifm agnetisrubbing,loosenmagn etclamp screw and shift magn etposition.R etighten magn etclamp screw. 6. Ifswitch m agnetassem blyswingsfreelyand m echanism stillfailstoactuate,check installation ofcontroltobe certainitisw ithin the specified threedegreesofvertical. (Use spiritlevelon side ofenclosing tube in two places, 90° apart.)R efertoFigure 3 on page5. 7. Ifm echanism isequipped witha me rcury switch,exam ine glassm ercurytube closelyaspreviouslydescribed in Section 3.0 P reventive Ma intena nce ( page7).
