1.1 PrincipleofOperation

The designofM agnetrolfloatoperated levelswitchesis based upon the principlethata magn etic fieldwillpene - trate non-magneticm aterialssuch as316stainlesssteel. In thiscase,the floatmo vesa magn eticattraction sleeve withina non-magnetic enclosing tube and actuatesa switch m echanism . T he enclosing tube providesa pressure sealto thechamberand therefore tothe process.

1.2 OperatingCycle

As theliquid levelrisesin the cham ber(referto Figure 1 ), thefloatmo vesthem agnetic attraction sleeveup within theenclosingtube and intothe fieldofthe switch me cha - nism m agnet.A sa result,the magn etisdrawn in tightlyto theenclosing tube causing the switch to trip,“m aking” or “breaking”an electricalcircuit.A sthe liquid levelfalls,the floatdropsand mo vesthe attraction sleeveoutofthemag - neticfield,releasing theswitch ata predeterm ined “low level” (refertoFigure 2 ). The tension spring ensuresthe return ofthe switch ina snap action. 2 .0 Installation

2.1 Unpa cking

2.2 CriticalAlarm Function

It isrecomm ended thatforcriticalalarm functions,an additionallevelswitch be installed asa high–highor low–low levelalarmform aximu m protection.

2.3 Piping

Figure 3 showsa typicalpiping installation ofa Magnetrol Series3controltoa pressure vessel.Leveldecalson controlidentify theactuation levelsforthe bottom switch me chanism ofa unitw ith threeswitchesatminimu m specific gravity.Chartsdefining actuation levelsfora unit with one switch atdifferentspecific gravitiescanbe found on pages23–24, Actuating Levelsand SpecificGravities, Section 5.2.3 . Use pipe ofsufficientstrengthto supportthe control.If necessary,provide a stand orhangerto helpsupportits weight.All piping shouldbe straightand free of“low spots”or“pockets” so thatlow erliquidline willdrain towardsthe vesseland uppervaporline willdrain toward thecontrol.Shut-offvalvesare recom men ded forinstalla - tion between thevesseland thecontrol.Ifcontrolistobe used with a low temp eratureliquid (one w hich will“boil” inthe floatchamberifoutside heatisabsorbed),the chamberand piping shouldbe insulated. 2.4 Mounting

Cau tion: If equipm ent is used in a ma nner not specified by the ma nufacturer,protection provided by the equipm ent ma y be im paired. Liquidina long linem aybe cooler and m ore dense than liquidinthe vesselcausinglowerlevel indication inthe controlthan actuallevelinthe vessel. C aution: Op eration of all buoyancy type level devices should be done in such a w ay as to minim ize theactionofdynamic forces on the float or displacer sensing element. Go od practice forreducing the likelihood ofdama ge tothecon - trolis toequalize pressureacross thedevice slowly.

2.5 Wiring

NOT E: Asw itch orcircuitbreakershallbe installed inclose proximity to equipm ent and within easy reach of operator.It shallbe m arked as thedisconnecting device for theequipme nt. NOT E: Fo rsupply connections in installations withambient tempera - tureup to+158°F (+70°C),use w irewitha m inimum rating of +167° F (+75° C )as required by the process conditions. Installations w ithamb ienttem peratures up to+176°F (+80°C) require wire with a m inim um rating of +185° F (+85° C )as required by the process conditions. Use a minimum of 14 AWG w ireforpow erand ground field wires. C aution: Level controls are shipped from the factory with the enclosing tube tightened and the m iddlesetscrew,on the housing base, locked to the enclosing tube. Fa ilure to loosen the set screw prior to repositioning the conduit connection m ay cause the enclosing tube to loosen, resulting in the possible leakage of the process liquid or vapor. Series3controlsare shipped w ith theconduitentryof theswitch housing placed 180° opposite to thetank con - figurations tosimplifyinstallation inmostcases. Ifthis configuration isappropriateto the installation,proceed to step 4 to begin w iring the unit. If anotherconfigurationis desired,the switch housing can be easilyrotated by first following steps1,2, and 3. 1. Loosen setscrew(s)atbaseofswitch housing. R eferto Figure 4 . 2. 3.0 Switch DifferentialAdjustment

The standard differentialofSeries3floatmod elsw ith one switch m echanism m aybe field-adjusted.Ad justment may be necessaryifa widerdifferentialneedsto be setto overcom e switch chattercausedby the process. The differential,orthe am ountofleveltravelbetw een “switch-on” and “switch-off ”, may be adjusted by repositioningthelowerjam nutson the floatstem . Thisadjustmentisdifferentforhigh leveland low level controls. R eferto theappropriatesection below for adjustme ntinstructions. C aution: Ma ximum differential adjustm ent is 1 inch (25 m m). Differentialadjustment ma y be done only on mode lswith a single sw itch m echanism .

3.1 Low LevelControls

On low levelcontrolsthe switch tripson the loweractuation pointand resetson the higheractuation point.W idening thedifferentialwillallow the switch to trip on the original actuation pointand resetata later,orhigher,point. The differentialon low levelcontrolsmay be adjusted by repositioningthelowerjam nutson the floatstem . The standardfactorysetting isfora minimum amo unt ofplay (gap)between thetop jam nutsand the attraction sleeveas shown inFigure 7 on page9. 1. Det ermine what changeindifferentialisnecessary. NOT E: To w iden thedifferentialone inch,thelowe rjam nutsmust be set proportionately low er on the stem (i.e.,in thisexam ple 1 inch). 2. Make sure powersourceisturned off. 3. 4.0 Preventive Maintenance

Periodicinspections area necessarymean sto keep your levelcontrolin good w orking order. T hiscontrolisa safety devicetoprotectthevaluableequipmen titserves. A sys - tematicprogram of“preventivemaintenance”mu stbe impleme nted w hen thecontrolisplaced intoservice. If the following sectionson “what to do”and “whatto avoid” are observed,your controlw illprovide reliableprotection of yourequipmentforman y years.

4.1 What To Do

4.1.1 Ke ep C ontrolC lean

Be surethe switch housing coverisalwaysinplaceon the control.Thiscoverisdesigned to keep dustand dirtfrom interferingwith switch me chanism operation. In addition, itprotectsagainstdamaging m oistureand actsasa safety feature by keeping bare wiresand terminalsfrom being exposed. Shouldthehousing coverorany sealsbecome dam aged orm isplaced,obtain a replacem entim m ediately.

4.1.2 InspectSwitch Me chanisms ,Term inals,and

Dry contactswitchesshouldbe inspected forexcessive wearon actuating leverormisalignm entofadjustment screw atpointofcontactbetw een screw and lever.Such wearcan cause false sw itch actuating levels.See switch me chanism bulletin supplied w ith controlshouldswitch adjustme ntorreplacem entbe necessary. 2. DO NOT operate your controlw ithdefectiveormal- adjusted switchme chanisms. Referto theSw itch Instruction Re ference Bu lletins charton page7 tofind appropriate bulletins forservice instructions. 3. Levelcontrolsm aysome time sbe exposed to excessive heatorm oisture. U ndersuch conditions,insulation on electricalwiring m aybecome brittle,eventuallybreaking orpeelingaway.T he resulting “bare” wirescan cause shortcircuits. NOT E: C heck wiring carefully and replace at the firstsignof brittle insulation.

4.1.4 Co ntrolHead R em ovaland Installation

Inspection oftheinteriorofthe chamber ispossibleon flanged cagem odels. T odo this,the controlheadmu stbe rem oved toprovide properaccessto the chamber. T his procedure willassure thatthe head assembly isremoved and reinstalled properly. 1. Allow vesseltogettosafetem perature and pressurebefore openingthepressureboundary. 2. Powerdow n allwiring tothe unit. 3. Rem oveallwiringand conduitfrom the unit. 4. Rem oveflangebolts. 5. Preparean areawherethe headassembly can be placed such thatitrestson the flangein itsnormal orientation (two 2 ×4 boardsplacedacrossan open drum w orkwell). RefertoFigure 9 on page11. 6. Carefullyliftthe headassembly by holding the sidesofthe flange. M aintainthe head assembly asmu ch aspossiblein theverticalposition. NOT E: C arem ustbe taken nottoplace sideforceon thefloatwhich could bend thestem. 7. With theunitrestingin itstemp oraryfixturein an upright position,itcannow be inspected orrepaired. C aution: Do not place the uniton itsside — thiscould result in dama ge tothestem . 8. Con ducta check forfloatstem straightnessasfollows:

8.1 Rem ovethe stem assembly including attraction sleeve

from thehead assem blyby rem oving thetw o screws holding thestop straptothe bottom oftheflange. See Figure 10 forassemblyschematic.

8.2 Che ck thestem straightnessby aligning the stem

againsta straightedge.Stem sthatarebentin excessof 1⁄8 inch overany 6 inch length shouldnotbe used inthiscondition. Replace any bentstem s. See Replaceme nt Parts,Section 5.3 beginning on page25 .

8.3 Ens ure thatthecomp onentsinthestem assembly are

ingood condition and surfacesareclearofpotential obstructions. T he stem assem blyisreinstalledby securing the stop strap to the flange. En sure thatthe attraction sleevem ovesfreelythrough the enclosing tube and thatthe stem assemblysurfacesaresmooth. N OTE: The floatis restricted from moving laterallyby thecham ber,in thetestconfiguration thefloatand stem can mo ve furtheroff centerthan possible under norm al operation.Avoid excess mo vem ent in this lateral direction duringthe test.Ifswitch trips,theunitm ay be reassem bled. 10. C aution: Op eration of all buoyancy type level devices should be done in such a w ay as to minim ize theactionofdynamic forces on the float or displacer sensing element.
