U ltrasound technology w asdeveloped during WWI Iunder the acronym SONA R (SOund Nav igationAn d Ra nging). Firstapplied to processcontrolinthe1960s, ultrasoniclevelmea sure - me ntcontinuestoplay a significantrole inliquidlevel me asureme ntto this day. U ltrasonicinstruments arema de for both contactand non- contact (or through-air) levelsensing. This brochure focuses on theEchotel ® line ofcontactultrasonicproductsthat provide singleand dualpointliq - uid levelme asureme ntin virtuallyevery process industry. Continuo us-Wave and Pulsed-SignalSensing U ltrasoniccontactlevelsensing is achieved by eithercontinuous- wave or pulsed-signaltechnology. Ou r Model 910 continuous-w ave switch usestwo piezoelectric crystalspositioned opposite each other acrossthetransducergap. Pulsed-signalM odels94 0/941 and 961/962 feature a digitalelectronicam plifier w hich producesa pow erful pulseofultrasonicenergyfive totentimes strongerthan most continuous wave units. This pulsed-signaltechnologyw ill providemo re accurate measu re - me ntinconditionsofaeration, suspended solids, turbulence, and highly viscous liquids. The transmitcrystalofpulse- signalunitsgeneratespulsesof high-frequencyultrasonic energyonly milliseconds in duration. Inbetweeneach pulse the receivecrystal“listens”forthe transmission. Ifliquidispresent inthegap thereceivecrystal detectsthe pulse and reportsa wetgap conditiontothe electronics.W hen the gap isfilled with air,the receivecrystalcannotdetectthepulse, and reportsa drygap condi tion. Ov er25 years ofexperiencewith ultrasonicgap switch technology has made theECHOTEL brand a worldleaderinliquid levelswitches. Today’sline offersthreedistinctproductofferings:

  • Forapplications where self-testisn’t required, oureconomicalM odel910 w ith continuous wave tech nology isa reliableswitch witha tip-sensitivetransducer.
  • Though OEM priced, our compact Models 940/941 offer bothadvanced tip-sensitive transducersand pulsed signaltechnology.
  • Single PointModel 961 and D ualPoint M odel9 62 offer tip-sensitive transducers, pulsed signaltechnology, advanced self-testand a time delay feature. Mo dels 96 1/962 representthe pinnacleof ultrasonic switch development atMa gnetrol ® . Their continuous self-testingofelectronics, transducer, piezoelectriccrystals, and testing for electromagnetic noise, alarms theuser ofa malfunction or thepresenceofEMI /RFI noise. A n adjustabletime delay of0.5 to 45 secondshelps curtailnuisance alarmsand relay chattering. Wi th extensive FM, CSA ,and AT EX approvals the Mod els961/962 aresuitable for virtuallyany hazardous location.TheirSFF* value ofover 90% mak esthem suitablefor useinSafety IntegrityLevel (SIL) 2 loops. Hav ingeitherrelay output or mA current shiftcapability,Mo dels 961/962 can be used for more processapplications, mak ingthem the most universal liquidlevelswitches available today. Ad vantages and Limitations The advantagesofcontactlevelsensingusing ultrasonictechnologiesare:
  • Low costsingle and dualpointsensing.
  • Ac curateand reliable ina w idevariety ofliquids.
  • U nliketuning forks,no densityadjustmentsrequired.
  • Easyinstallationand simple configuration.
  • A broad rangeofavailable sensor materials.
  • Transmits a stable signaldespiteliquidproperty changesinspecificgravity, conductivity,pH, and dielectricor temperatureshifts.
  • Switches are 100% electronicand containno mo vingparts w hich can degrade or requirehighmaintenance. Certainprocessconditions ma y interferewith the ultrasonicsignal. Theseconditions include:
  • Slurrieswith a very high percentage ofsolids.
  • Extreme aerationofthe liquid.
  • Liquidsw hichgenerate crystallizedcoatings.
  • Veryaggressiveturbulence and splashing.
