1.0 Introduction
1.1 Description
EchotelM odel940 & 941 Ultrasonic LevelSw itchesare comp actintegralunitsthatutilize pulsed signaltechnology toperform high orlow levelm easurementin a wide variety ofliquidapplications.T heseswitchesfeature pulsed electronicsthatareencapsulated atthe top oftheprocess fitting and a 316 stainlesssteeltip-sensitivetransducer. Mo del940 featuresa 1 am p SPD T relayoutputw hile the941 hasa currentshiftoutput.
1.2 PrincipleofOperation
Echotel940 & 941 levelswitchesutilizeultrasonicenergy todetectthe presence orabsence ofliquid in a tip sensitive transducergap. The principleofcontactultrasonictech - nologyisthathighfrequency sound w avesare easilytrans - mitted acrossa transducergap in the presence ofliquid, butare attenuated w hen thegap isdry(seeFigure 1). The M odel 940 & 941 usethisultrasonic technologyto perform liquidlevelm easurem entin a wide varietyof processme diaand application conditions. A pairofpiezoelectric crystalsareencapsulated inepoxy at the tip ofthe transducer.Th e crystalsarem adeofa ceramic materialthatvibratesata given frequency w hen subjected toan applied voltage. The transmitcrystalconvertsthe applied voltage from the electronicsinto an ultrasonicsignal. Whe n liquid ispresentin the gap,the receivecrystalis abletosensethe ultrasonicsignalfrom the transmitcrystal and convertitbackto an electricalsignal.Thissignalis senttothe electronicsto indicate the presence ofliquidin thetransducergap.Whe n thereisno liquidpresent, the ultrasonicsignalisattenuated and isnotdetected by the receivecrystal.
