The amo unt of capacitance developed in any vesselis determined by the size (surface area)of the probe, the distance from the probe to itsground reference, and the dielectricconstantofthe m edium being m easured. Con sideringthat the probe’smo unting position isfixed and the dielectric of the med ium isconstant, then the amount of capacitance developed in any vesselbecom es dep endent upo n the amount of the probe whic h is coveredby the media. A s the med ia rises and falls in the tank, the am ount of capacitance develope d betwee n the prob e and the ground reference also changes. The capacitancesignal is converted to a frequency proportional to the change in level. The am plifier then converts thisdigitalsignal into an isolated 4–20 m A analog outputsignal. T Y P I C A L A P P L I C A T I O N Th e following sum p app lication displays the extraordinary pow er and simplified calibration ofthe Kotron Sentinelwith Magn eCal.To better understand how this calibration is achieved, considerthe approach intwo steps: Step 1 Probecalibration AllRF Capacitance devices mus t be calibrated in the process vessel. To calibrate, the process levelmus t be variedto achievea capacitance change. Wi th Mag neCal,the probe is calibrated by establishing only two reference points and storing the data in the m icroprocessor, viathe 4-digitLEDand 3-button keypad. With conventionalelectronics, the levelwo uld need tobe variedmultipletimes. Step2 Relay configuration Th e relays are now configured with no further level change required. The Sentineldraw s upon the reference data stored during the probe calibration. The relaycontrol pointsare easily entered viathe same 4-digit LED and 3-button keypad. All relayscan be cali - bratedand recalibrated w ithoutfurtherlevelchange. Relays can be set up for lead/lag operation to enable even pum p wear. Pump Pump High level alarm Low level alarm Probecanbecalibrated in onelevelchange and levelmovementas little as 2%of tankheight
