The am ount of capacitance developed inany vesselis determined by the size(surfacearea)of the probe, the distance from theprobe to its ground, and the dielectric ofthemedium being m easured. Considering thatthe probe’s mount ingposition isfixed and thatthe dielectric value ofthe medium is constant, then theamount of capacitance developed in any vesselbecom es dependent upon the amount of the probe w hich iscovered by the me dia. A s m ediarises and falls inthe tank, theamo untof capacitance developed between the sensing probe and the ground also rises and falls.Thischange in capaci - tance iscom pared to the adjustablesetpointand changes the state ofa relayw hen they areequal.
