DESCRIPTION

The 53506 Series Solid-State Power Controllers (SSPC) are designed to replace electromechanical breakers and solid-state relays. In addition to less weight and resilience to shock and vibration damage, SSPCs offer superior performance and longer operational lifetime over electromechanical circuit breakers, by eliminating problems associated with arcing and contact contamination. 53506 SSPCs also offer protection for current overload and short circuit conditions. Control input and output stages are isolated up to 1000VDC. The Power MOSFET switches used in output stage provide low “on” resistance and minimal internal power dissipation. Micropac recommends that any transient voltage which may result from operating into an inductive load (i.e. during turn off) should be suppressed to ensure that the part will not be exposed to a condition above its absolute maximum ratings. The 53506 SSPC features a programmable current trip point feature, allowing the trimming of the trip current between the device current rating ( tripI ) and one half of tripI . The trip point can be adjusted per the following equation: )(trimI )(designI     )(100 501 trimR Where R(trim) is in kilo ohms. As an application example, )(trimR must be set to zero ohms, for a 50% current trip point. This can be accomplished by applying a short circuit between pins 6 and 7 of the device. (See Figure 1) The part features short-circuit protection, over current protection and an output status pin to monitor the operational state of the circuit. The output current is continuously monitored to respond to an over-current condition by interrupting the output current path. Over-current conditions include Load Overload and Short Output (Short Circuit Load) after the device has been powered up and the load current has been turned on. An open-collector Output Status pin is available to indicate the “on” or fault states. The output remains disabled (off) until the fault condition has been removed and the unit has been reset. Resetting the unit is accomplished by toggling the input control. This feature prevents damage to the controller while averting further system failure that may be caused by the fault condition. The 53506 device is available in various quality levels from COTS to MIL-PRF-38534 Class K including custom screening requirements. RADIATION TOLERANT The 53 506 contains radiation hardened components and/or other features that provide a level of radiation tolerance. Micropac does not guarantee any level of radiation hardness. Specific lot testing is required to determine the level of radiation hardness. Micropac does not offer this device as compliant to Appendix G (RHA Requirements) of MIL -PRF- 38534.

Soft turn-on of the SSPC MOSFET reduces high capacitive load currents. However, the designer must understand his load to ensure high capacitive loads and resistive wiring limit high surge currents.
