1.1 Unpacking

1.2 Mounting

1.2.1 TransmitterLocation

The transmitterenclosure shouldbe securelyfastenedtoan appropriate supportingstructure,in a location thatpermits easy accessformaintenance. A void locationsthatare exposed todirectsunlight,flooding,highlevelsofradiated electromagn eticinterference,and excessivevibration or shock.

1.2.2 TransducerLocation

NOT E: The 344/345 requiresa blockingdistance between the trans - ducer and the m aximum liquid level.The m inimum blocking distance is12 inches (305 m m )for Mode l345 and 18 inches (460mm ) for Mo del 344.At tempe ratures above +140°F (+60° C )m inim um ,it is 18 inches for either mo del.Ma ximum blocking distance should be lim ited to approximately 10 feet (3 m) as this blocking distance is extended at the expense of the usefulspan overw hich theinstrum entoperates.

2.1 ElectrostaticDischarge (ESD)

Magne trol’selectronicinstrumentsarem anufactured tothe highestqualitystandards. T hese instrum entsutilize elec - tronic com ponentswhich m aybe damaged by static elec - tricity presentinmo stw ork environm ents. T he following stepsarerecom m ended to reduce the riskofcom ponent failure due toelectrostaticdischarge:

  • Ship and store circuitboardsin anti-static bags.Ifan anti- staticbagisnotavailable,wrap boardin alum inum foil.Do notplaceboardson foam packing m aterials.
  • Use a grounding wriststrap w hen installing and remo ving circuitboards. A grounded workstation isalsorecom mend ed.
  • Hand leprinted circuitboardsonlyby the edges.Do not touch com ponentsorconnectorpins.

2.2 Transmitter Power Wiring

NOTE: Models 344 and 345 have the same motherboard (P/N 030-3564-00X), but have unique daughter boards. The 345 uses a daughter board (P/N 030-3565-001) that drives the 50 kHz Model 385-XXXX-XXX transducer, and the 344 uses a daughter board (P/N 030-3573-001) that drives the 38 kHz Model 384-XXXX-XXX transducer. Caution: DO NOT attempt to operate this unit at voltages other than as specified from the Model Identification as it will damage the unit. Caution: This instrument is grounded through the grounding con- nector of terminal block TB1. The power input must include a ground wire connected to a good earth ground. Failure to ground the instrument may allow a shock hazard to exist! 1. Open the cover of the transmitter enclosure by loosening the six screws. 2. The PC board is marked for 120/240 VAC (L1, L2/N, GND) and 24 VDC (+,–) power connections. Ensure proper con- nections are made on the six position terminal block TB1. Refer to Figure 14. Spade lugs should be used. For opti- mum operator safety, observe the wiring colors listed in the chart at left. 3. T o prevent electromagnetic noise from disrupting the normal operation of the Model 344/345, the ground (GND) should be connected to a good earth ground with as short a length as possible of heavy wire or copper braid. 4. Proceed to the appropriate transducer wiring section. NOTE: Stainless steel transducers are shipped with a protective rub- ber cap over the transducer face. Remove this cap after mounting is complete.

2.3 Transducer Wiring

Caution: Do not run transducer cable in the same conduit with power, signal, or other transducer cables. The transducer cable consists of two twisted pairs of wire wrapped with a shield. Refer to Figure 15 for wire identifi- cation. NOTE: It is imperative that Magnetrol cable part number 037-3176 (Belden Type 8102) be used. If connecting cable was not pro- vided with unit, consult factory for specifications. Maximum total cable length is 500 feet (152 m). AVOID SPLICING CABLE. If a 316 stainless steel transducer is used, connect the green ground wire to an earth ground (i.e. conduit, tank, etc). If a junc- tion box is used, connect earth ground to green terminal screw. 2.5 O utputSignalWiring

The 4 –20mA DC outputconnectionscan be mad e atter - minal blockTB 1, located inside thetransmitterhousing. Referto Figure 18. The loop isopticallyisolated,hasnon- grounded outputs,and can drivea 1000 -ohm load. 1. Co nnectthe positive(+)shielded twisted pairwire from the load toterminalLO O P (+). 2. 2.6 RS-232 Output

N O TE: The RS-232 output is only used for downloading inform ation from theoptional31-day datalogger. RS -232outputconnection islocated atT B 2and labeled T X and RX. R efertoF igure19. This connection forthe RS-232isutilized forthehook-up ofa laptop com puter. Inthelaptop m ode,one candown - load stored dataifunitisequipped with the datalogging option. The cabletoconnectthelaptop com puterto the Mod el 344/345 m ustbe supplied by the user.Con figurethiscable asshow n in F igure 19. D ow nloading instructionsare in the Laptop Section on page39.

2.7 Transducer Synchronization

T ransducersynchronization isonlyavailablew iththeMod el 344 unit.Itallowsyou to run the cabling from mu ltiple Mo del384 transducersin the same conduit.Th isprevents thepossibilityforcrosstalkto occurfrom one Mode l344 to another. T he masterunitsynchronizesthe ultrasonicsignals such thatallunitstransmittheirultrasonicsignalsatthe same time. T hiseliminatesthe possibility ofcrosstalk occurring. The Ge neralPasswo rd ( PASSWO RD )isused forthe System Con fig and the I/O Conf igportion ofthe Men u Structure. Whe n a changeismad e to parametersinthese m enus(i.e., range,span,4 –20m A, relays,etc.),the M odel344/345 will prom pttheoperatortoentera passwo rd.Thispasswordcan be any one- tosix-digitnumeric combination.

3.2.2 SupervisoryPasswo rd

The SupervisoryPasswo rd( SUP PSWD )isused forthe Ad vanced Co nfigportion oftheM enu Structure. This password isused to protectvaluesthatcan affectthe performanceand/oraccuracy ofthedevice. NOT E: Although the Sup ervisory Pa ssword is normallyused in the Advanced Co nfig m enu,this passw ordcan alsobe used in any portion of the m enu.The Sup ervisoryPa ssword overrides the GeneralPa ssw ord.

The Passwords can be changed at any time via the Advanced Config mode. If an invalid password is entered, the display will read Password Invalid. By pressing twice, the unit will continue to operate with the previously-programmed parameters.

3.3 Operator Keypad

All Unit Configuration instructions in this manual will show the local transmitter display exactly as it will appear to the operator. The operator interface to the 344/345 is via a keypad consisting of the following keys: 17Echotel Model 344/345 Ultrasonic Non-contact Transmitter Password Sup Pass For numeric entry of parameters. For decimal-point entries. To exit any programming area and return to a measurement mode. For entering new parameter values into memory. Also used to exit the parameter entry mode, if pressed prior to entering numeric parameter values. To sequentially access other parameters. Parameters may also be skipped over without affecting their stored values. The DOWN arrow also acts as a backspace for correcting data entry errors. Helpful when entering a new tag in the Enter Tag section of the Advanced Configuration menu.

5.7 Meas urement Range Calculations

U ltrasonic non-contact devices are typically rated for a ma ximum rang e in ideal conditions. Exp erience has shown that ma ximum range must be red uced for certain factors. Although the max imum rang e rating is somewh at conserv - ative, each application must be evaluated for specific con - ditions in the tank. H O W T O C A L C U L A T E To evaluate the performa nce of a 344 or 345 in a particular application, use the chart on the next page and follow the steps below: 1. Select one condi tion from each of the o perating param eters that best describes your app lication. 2. Enter the corresponding perform ance mu ltiplier value in the application co lumn. 3. M ultiply all of the selected values together. 4. Mu ltiply step 3 by the m aximum po tential range of the unit. This yields a value that is the m aximum allowa ble meas uremen t range for the ap plication. E X A M P L E The vessel is a closed-top tank, 26-feet tall and is filled from the top. BEAM SPREAD INTERFERENCE: It is strongly recommended that No interference 1.0 nothing be allowed within the transducer’s beam, except the liquid which is being monitored.
