1.1 Unpa cking

Unpackthe instrum entcarefully. Inspectallunitsfor dam age. R eportany concealeddam agetocarrierwithin 24 hours. Check thecontentsofthepacking slip and purchase order. Check and recordthe serialnum berfor futurereference when ordering parts. C aution: Do not discard the shipping container untilallparts are checked.

1.2 Mounting and ApplicationConsiderations

C aution: Un itshouldonly be hand-tightened ( 4– 12 ft-lbs)into the process connection.The w rench flatsshouldonlybe used wh en remo ving the unit.Overtightening willcause trans - ducererrors and w illvoid thew arranty. The reare severalapplication considerationsthatshouldbe evaluated priorto installing a non-contactultrasonictrans - mitter. T he nextfew pagesshouldbe read thoroughlyto ensure thattheM odel335 w illperform asexpected in thegiven application. Section 2.4, M easurementRange Calculations ,providesme asurementrangecalculationsthat shouldbe used todetermine the maximum potentialrange indifficultapplications.

1.2.1 Position

The optimu m m ounting position ofthe Mo del335 is between 1⁄2 oftheradiusand 2 ⁄3 diameterofthe (cylindrical) tank.Thiswillpositionthe unitto minimize any interfer - encethatthe7°beam (3.5° halfangle)haswith the tank wallsorany agitatorbladesthatexistin the tank. R eferto beam anglefigure on page38.

1.2.2 O rientation

The face ofthetransducerm ustbe parallelto the liquid surface within±2° to3°.

1.2.3 Tem perature

En sure thatthetransm itterw illbe protected against overheating by directsunshine. W hen the unitw illbe subjected tosevere directsun,the use ofa sunshadeis recom me nded. Sunshade

1.2.4 O bstructions

En sure thatno obstacles(e.g., fillpipes,ladders,bracing me m bers,thermome ters,etc.) protrude into theultrasonic beam. A lthough one fixed objectinthe tank canbe blocked outby appropriate program ming,itisadvised to avoid theseobstructions.

1.2.5 Standpipes

In applicationsw herethe materiallevelm aycome intothe deadband,the transducerm ustbe mou nted in a standpipe. RefertoSection 1.6.1, Mea surementConfiguration Parameters, P05:D eadband fordeadband value. The inner rim ofthestandpipe m ustbe smooth and freeofburrs. The m inim um diameterfora given lengthofstandpipeis shown atleft.

1.2.6 Foam

Foaming oftheliquid surface may renderultrasoniclevel me asureme ntimpossible.Ifpossible,a m ounting location shouldbe found,wherefoaming isata minimum. Ano theralternative isto installthetransducerin a stilling wellthatextendsbelow thelow estlevelto be measured in thetank.

1.2.7 Vapors

Closed tanksthatcontain chem icalsorotherliquidsthat create vapors,m ayseverelyreducethe maximum measur - ingrange. R eferto theSection 2.4, M easurementRange Calculations formore information.

1.2.8 Wind

Intensivemo ving oftheairin the vicinity oftheultrasonic beam istobe avoided. A strong w ind may notallowthe return echo tobe received by the ultrasonic transducer.

1.2.9 O pen channelflow m easureme nt

Forthe bestaccuracy,installthe transducerascloseaspos - sibleabovethe expected m aximu m waterlevelintheflume orweir. InstalltheM odel335 upstream ofthe flume throatorw eir crestinthelocation defined by the man ufacturerofthe primary m easuring device. 2.2 Theory ofO peration

Non -contactultrasonic me asurem entism adeby emitting an ultrasonic pulse from the transducerand measuring the time required forthe echo toreflectfrom theliquidsur - faceand return tothe transducer.
