1 Overview

The XTR111 isa precisionvoltage-to-currentconverterdesignedforstandard0-mA to20-mA or4-mA to 20-mA analogsignals, butcan sourceup to36 mA. The ratiobetween inputvoltageand outputcurrentis setby a singleresistor,R SET .Thisreferenceresistorisan externaldevicebecause absoluteaccuracyis requiredand performancecan be selectedtomeet applicationrequirements.A few featuresofthe XTR111 include:

  • An externalP-MOSFET ensureshighoutputresistanceand a broadcompliancevoltagerange extendingfrom2 V belowthepositivesupply(VSP) tovoltageswellbelowthenegativesupply(GND).
  • An adjustable3-V to15-V subregulatoroutputprovidesthesupplyvoltageforadditionalcircuitry.
  • An errorflag(EF) isprovidedtoindicatefaultconditionson thecurrentoutput.Thisflagindicatesopen loadorhighloadresistance.
  • The XTR111 alsoprovidesoutputdisablecontrol(OD).OD must be assertedlowtoactivatethe output. The XTR111 isavailableineithera DFN surface-mountpackage oran MSOP PowerPAD ™ package. PowerPAD isa trademarkofTexas Instruments. 1SBOU048C –April2007–RevisedApril2013 XTR111 DemonstrationFixtureUser's Guide SubmitDocumentationFeedback Copyright© 2007–2013,Texas InstrumentsIncorporated

2 Hardware Features

Thissectiondescribesthehardwarefeaturesfoundon theXTR111EVM.

2.1 XTR111EVM

The XTR111EVM isused forthebasicfunctionalevaluationoftheXTR111. The EVM providesthe followingfeatures:

  • Easy handlingofthesmallDFN package. The DFN deviceisalreadysolderedtothelandingpattern on thePCB. A mechanicaldrawingoftherecommended landpatterncan be foundattheend ofthe XTR111 productdatasheet.
  • Easy accesstoalldevicepins.
  • Easily-configurabledigitalinputs(OD and EF) todisabletheoutput,modifytheoutputcircuitfor voltageoutput,orapplya 4-mA signalshift.
  • LED indicatorfortheerrorflag,EF.
  • Outputprotectionand filteringcircuitry. The XTR111EVM isinitiallyconfiguredtoa basicsetupfor0 mA to20 mA operationwitha 0-V to5-V input.Note thatalthoughtheaccuracyofthegainsettingresistor,R SET ,used intheEVM is0.1%,the XTR111 devicehas greateraccuracy.The remainingresistorsarestandard1%. The voltageregulatoris setto5 V. The EVM requiresone externalpower-supplyvoltagewitha rangeof8 V to40 V. RefertotheXTR111 productdatasheetforcomprehensiveinformationabouttheXTR111 and possible deviceconfigurations.Figure1 shows theXTR111 EVM. Figure1.XTR111EVM

2.2 ExternalConnections

2.2.1 Power Supply

The power-supplyconnectionsfortheEVM arelocatedon theTB1 terminalblock.The validpower- supplyrangeis+7 V to+44 V.The supplieisdecoupledwitha 10-µF tantalumcapacitor,as wellas a 1-µF ceramiccapacitornearthedevice.The XTR111EVM alsocontainstestpointsforthesupply voltageand groundlocatednexttoTB1.

2.2.2 SignalInput

TerminalblockTB4 isused forthenoninvertingsignalinput,VIN.The validrangeisfrom0 V to+12 V. A testpointconnectedtoVIN islocatednexttoTB4.

2.2.3 VoltageRegulator

The XTR111 providesan externally-adjustablevoltageregulatorthatcan provideup to5 mA of current. The regulatorhas drive(REGF) and sense (REGS) inputs.Sense inputREGS isreferencedto 3 V,representingthelowestadjustablevoltagelevel. An externalresistordividersetsthedriveinput, REGF. FortheXTR111EVM, REGF issetto5 V.REGF (named VREG on theXTR111EVM), is accessiblethroughterminalblockTB3 and by a testpointlabeledVREG.

2.2.4 Output

The XTR111 isdesignedforuse witha discretep-channelMOSFET (Q3).ThisFET extendsthe voltagecomplianceforthecontrolledcurrenttoa potentialwellbelowthenegativesupplyvoltage.The currentoutputfortheXTR111EVM islocatedatterminalblockTB2. A testpointconnectedtoIOUT is locatednexttoTB2. The XTR111EVM can be configuredfora voltageoutputby shuntingJ2.There aretwo testpointsconnectedtothevoltageoutputcircuit.The VOUT testpointisplaceddirectlyatthe node oftheresistiveload,and VOUT_F providesa basicfilterfortheoutput.

2.2.5 AdditionalTestPoints

The followinglistshows additonaltestpoints:

  • OD isconnectedtotheoutputdisablepinoftheXTR111. To disabletheoutput,pulltheOD pinhigh by shuntingJ1.
  • EF isconnectedtotheerrorflagpinoftheXTR111. The EF pinisactivelow. When thereisan error, EF ispulledlowand theLED circuitisenabled.
