Introduction www.ti.com

1 Introduction

The TPS62090 devicefamilyisa high-frequencysynchronousstepdown converteroptimizedforsmall solutionsize,highefficiencyand issuitableforbattery-poweredapplications.To maximizeefficiency,the converteroperatesinPWM mode witha nominalswitchingfrequencyof2.8MHz/1.4MHz and automaticallyentersPower Save Mode operationatlight-loadcurrents.When used indistributedpower suppliesand point-of-loadregulation,thedeviceallowsvoltagetrackingtoothervoltagerailsand tolerates capacitorsrangingfrom22 µF up to100 µF.UsingtheDCS Control™ topology,thedeviceachieves excellentloadtransientperformanceand accurateoutputvoltageregulation.The deviceisavailablein3 x 3-mm, 16-pinpackage withthermalpad.

2 ConsiderationsWhen EvaluatingtheTPS62090

The TPS62090 can be programmed fora switchingfrequencyof2.8MHz/1.4MHz by JP2.The higher switchingfrequencyreducestheripplecurrentand voltage.IftheLC filterisadjusted,notethatthe inductorminimum valueis1 µH forthe1.4-MHz settingand 0.47µH forthe2.8-MHz setting.The EVM was builtwitha 1-µH inductorand a 22-µF outputcapacitor.The integratedcircuit(IC)has a two-stage inputcurrentlimitthatsetstheinitialcurrentlimittoone third(approximately1.55A) ofthenormalpeak currentlimitofapproximately4.6A,when theoutputislessthan0.6V.Most systemloadsdo notbecome enabledoractiveuntiltheoutputhas reached0.8V,whichisaftertheinitialstart-upcurrentlimit.Ifa low- resistanceloadisused (lessthanapproximately1 Ω),thepartcan getstuckinshort-circuitmode during power up.Thus,veryheavy loadsmay have tobe appliedafterpower up ortheusercan placean N-CH logiclevelFET inserieswiththeresistor(drainconnectedtogroundsideofresistor,sourceconnectedto groundand gatetiedtothedrain).Once theoutputreachesapproximately1 V,theloadturnson.

3 TestSummary

The TPS62090EVM-063 boardrequiresan adjustabledc power supplywithup toa 6-V outputand ≥ 2.5 A forpoweringtheinputtotheEVM and a resistiveoutputloadbetween 1 kΩ and 0.6Ω.Choose the properpower ratingfortheloadresistor,P = V2 /R. Use atleast2x thecalculatedpower dissipation. The testsetupconnectionsand jumpersettingsselectionsareconfiguredfora stand-aloneevaluation,butcan be changed tointerfacewithexternalhardwaresuch as a systemloadand microcontroller.

3.3 TestProcedure

  1. Setup theEVM isaccordingtoTable1 and Figure1,and presetthepower supplyto4.5Vdc at approximately2.5-Acurrentlimit. 2. Turnon inputsupply,and verifythattheinputvoltageisapproximately4.5Vdc (DMM#1) and the outputvoltageisatapproximately1.8Vdc (DMM#2). 3. RefertoFigure2,and verifythatthedutycycleisnear40%, inputrippleislessthan50 mVpp (ignoringswitchingspikes)and theoutputrippleislessthan10 mVpp. These waveformswere taken withhigh-frequencyprobes(meaningthatthegroundleadwas short(approximately1 cm).This reducesthehigh-frequencyspikesthatthegroundloopon theprobepicksup. 4. Varyinputvoltagebetween 2.6V and 5.5V,and observethechange indutycycleand ripple waveforms.SetVinback to4.5Vdc. 5. Move JP2 From:1.4MHz to2.8MHz. Verifythatthechange isswitchingfrequencyas shown in Figure3.ReturntheJP2 shuntback tothe1.4-MHz setting. 6. Change theoutputloadto25 Ω,setCH3 to50mV/div,and verifyhow thedutycyclechanges intoa burstlow-powermode as seen inFigure4.Attheend oftheburstswitching,theinductor’s current goes tozero,becomes discontinuous,and ringswiththeFET and outputcapacitance(normal operationatlightloads).Settheloadback toapproximately2 Ω. 7.
