Light Load Operation Heavy Load Operation (Vout=1.8V , Io=0mA) (Vout=1.8V , Io=200mA) Block Diagram Function description UM3501 is a monolithic switching mode Step-D own DC-DC converter. It utilizes internal MOSFETs to achieve high efficiency and can genera te very low output voltage by using internal reference at 0.6V . It operates at a fixed switc hing frequency, and uses the slope compensated current mode architecture. This Step-Down DC -DC Converter supplies 600mA output current at VIN =3.6V with input voltage range from 2.5V to 5.5V . SW VOUT 20mV/div 5ms/div SW VOUT 20mV/div 500ns/div

http://www.union-ic.com Rev.03 May.2013 7 / 1 1 UM3501 Current Mode PWM Control Slope compensated current mode PWM control provides stable switching and cycle-by-cycle current limit for excellent load and line responses and protection of the internal main switch (P-Ch MOSFET) and synchronous rectifier (N-CH MOS FET). During normal operation, the internal P-Ch MOSFET is turned on for a certain time to ra mp the inductor current at each rising edge of the internal oscillator, and switched off when the peak inductor current is above the error voltage. The current comparator, I COMP, limits the peak inductor current. When the main switch is off, the synchronous rectifier will be turned on immediatel y and stay on until either the inductor current starts to reverse, as indicated by the current reversal comparator, I ZERO, or the beginning of the next clock cycle. Pulse Skipping Mode Operation At very light loads, the UM3501 automatically enters Pulse Skipping Mode. In the Pulse Skipping Mode, the inductor current may reach zero or reverse on each pulse. The PWM control loop will automatically skip pulses to maintain output regul ation. The bottom MOSFET is turned off by the current reversal comparator, I ZERO, and the switch voltage will ring. This is discontinuous mode operation, and is normal behavior for the switching regulator. Maximum Load Current The UM3501 will operate with input supply volta ge as low as 2.5V , however, the maximum load current decreases at lower input due to large IR drop on the main switch and synchronous rectifier. The slope compensation signal reduces the peak induc tor current as a function of the duty cycle to prevent sub-harmonic oscillations at duty cycles greater than 50%. Conversely the current limit increases as the duty cycle decreases. Applications Information Output Voltage Setting The external resistor divider sets the output vol tage. The feedback resistor R1 also sets the feedback loop bandwidth with the internal compensation capacitor. Choose R1 around 300kΩ for optimal transient response. R2 is then given by: 16.0 V V RR OUT Inductor Selection A 1µH to 10µH inductor with DC current rati ng at least 25% higher than the maximum load current is recommended for most applications. Fo r best efficiency, the inductor DC resistance shall be<200mΩ. For most designs, the inductance value can be derived from the following equation: OSCLIN OUTINOUT fIV VVVL ×Δ× −×= )( Where ∆IL is the inductor ripple current. Choose inducto r ripple current approximately 30% of the maximum load current, 600mA. The maximum inductor peak current is: L LOADMAXL III Δ+= Under light load conditions below 100mA, larg er inductance is recommended for improved efficiency. Input Capacitor Selection The input capacitor reduces the surge current draw n from the input and switching noise from the

http://www.union-ic.com Rev.03 May.2013 8 / 1 1 UM3501 device. The input capacitor impedance at the switc hing frequency shall be less than input source impedance to prevent high frequency switching curre nt passing to the input. Ceramic capacitors with X5R or X7R dielectrics are highly recomme nded because of their low ESR and small temperature coefficients. For most applications, a 4.7µF capacitor is sufficient. Output Capacitor Selection The output capacitor keeps output voltage ripple small and ensures regulation loop stable. The output capacitor impedance shall be low at the switching frequency. Ceramic capacitor with X5R or X7R dielectrics are recommended. The output ripple ∆V OUT is approximately: −×≤Δ 38 1)( CfESRLfV VVVV OSCOSCIN OUTINOUT OUT Layout Guidance When laying out the PC board, the following su ggestions should be taken to ensure proper operation of the UM3501. 1. The power traces, including the GND trace, the SW trace and the VIN trace should be kept short, direct and wide to allow large current flow. 2. Connect the input capacitor C1 to the VIN pin as closely as possible to get good power filter effect. 3. Keep the switching node, SW, away from the sensitive FB node. 4. Do not trace signal line under inductor.
