STM32F101xx and STM32F103xx medium-density devices: upgrading your toolchain to V5.20 of IAR EWARM Introduction The purpose of this technical note is to provide information on the upgrade to V5.20 of the IAR EWARM toolchain when using STM32F101xx and STM32F103xx medium-density devices. For the complete documentation about EWARM V5.20, please refer to the IAR website. IAR EWARM V5.20 In July 2008, IAR released a new revision of the Embedded Workbench for ARM (EWARM): V5.20. The previous version was V5.11. While running the tests with this new toolchain revision, STMicroelectronics and IAR found some incompatibility with revisions B and Z of the STM32F101xx and STM32F103xx medium-density devices. ST recommends to use the latest revision of the STM32F101xx and STM32F103xx medium-density, that is revision Y . Free samples of the revision Y of the STM32F101xx and STM32F103xx medium-density chips are available from the STM32 page on the ST website. To get free samples, go to http://www.st.com/mcu/inchtml-pages-stm32.html, then click on the desired device on the product portfolio view. The page will direct you to the product page. For instance, if you click on STM32F103RB, you will be redirected to http://www.st.com/mcu/devicedocs-STM32F103RB-110.html where you can find samples by clicking on the button. The free sampling process is explained at: http://www.st.com/stonline/domains/buy/samples/index.htm. If you are using an IAR starter kit, an ST evaluation board or an ST motor control kit with revisions B and Z of the STM32F101xx and STM32F103xx medium-density devices and you wish to upgrade to revision Y , ST offers a free replacement with the latest IAR starter kit, ST evaluation board and ST motor control kit. Please contact your nearest ST sales office or distributor.
Questions and answers: IAR EWARM V5.20 and STM32F101xx/STM32F103xx medium-density de- Appendix A Questions and answers: IAR EWARM V5.20 and STM32F101xx/STM32F103xx medium- density devices Q1: How many revisions of the medium-density devices are there? A1: Three revisions have been delivered to customers: Rev. B, Rev. Z and Rev. Y in chronological order (Rev B -> Rev Z -> Rev Y). Q2: Which revisions have compatibility issues with IAR EWARM V5.20? A2: The compatibility issue is with Rev. B and Rev. Z of medium-density devices. Q3: How can I tell which revision I am using? A3: The revision letter is on the package. Its location is explained in the product errata sheet. Q4: Is there any problem with my application developed with the previous version of IAR and previous versions of STM32F101xx/STM32F103xx medium-density devices? A4: No, systems already developed, validated and delivered to the field with previous silicon revisions are not affected. Q5: Can I still use IAR EWARM V5.20 with Rev. Z or Rev. B of an STM32F101xx/STM32F103xx medium-density device if everything works fine? A5: No, we advise to use only Rev Y with IAR EWARM V5.20. Q6: What are the STM32F101xx/STM32F103xx medium-density parts currently available? A6: Today, ST produces only Rev. Y devices, which correspond to the latest silicon revision. Some distributors may still have stocks of previous revisions, but they are smoothly being replaced by Rev. Y devices. Q7: How am I sure to get only Rev. Y? A7: The e-sampling process is explained at the beginning of the present document (TN0067).
