User's Guide SLWU073 –October2011 TRF3705EVM EvaluationModule This user'sguide providesinstructionsforevaluatingthe TRF3705 modulatorwith a TRF3705EVM evaluationmodule. The TRF3705 is a quadraturemodulatorforup-convertingthe in-phase(I)and quadrature-phase(Q) signalsto RF signalsin the transmitchain,typicallyused between the digital-to-analogconverterand theRF power amplifier.

2.3 Calibration
The RF cablesmust be good qualityRF cablesdue tothehigh-frequencysignals.
- Measure theinsertionlossoftheRF outputcable, and use thisvaluetocompensate forthemeasured outputpower.
- Measure theinsertionlossoftheLO inputcable,and use thisvaluetocompensate forthedesiredLO power. 3SLWU073 –October2011 TRF3705EVM EvaluationModule SubmitDocumentationFeedback Copyright© 2011,Texas InstrumentsIncorporated

3.1 Single-ToneOutput Power Test
- Connectpower supplies:
- SetVCC supplyto3.3V and setthecurrentlimitto500 mA.
- ConnecttheVCC supplytoheaderTP2. ConnectthegroundtoTP1. 2. Use a suitable50-Ω outputsignalgeneratortosupplytheLO signalwith0 dBm withthecableloss compensated and thedesiredfrequencyfLO = 1 GHz toJ1;terminateJ2 with50 Ω toground. 3. Use a digital-to-analogconverteroran arbitrarywaveform generatortoprovideI/Qinputsignals.A typicalsetupisas follows:a 1-Vpp sinusoidalwave indifferentialmode forbothIand Q signalswitha frequencyoff1,a dc offsetof0.25V,and an outputimpedance of50 Ω.Use an AgilentE4438C vector signalgeneratortoprovideI/Qsignalsinthefollowingexample.
- PressPreset.
- PressMode → More (1of2)→ Multitone.
- PressInitializeTable→ Number ofTones → 12 → Enter.
- PressFreq Spacing → 1 → MHz.
- PressDone.
- Highlighteach row ofthefirst11 rows,and pressToggle Statetoturntheselectedtoneoff;keep onlythelastrow withtheBB frequencyof5.5MHz. Now, 5.5-MHz,single-tone,BB I/Qsignalsare configuredforE4438C.
- PressMultitoneOff/OnuntilOn ishighlightedtogeneratethemultitonewaveform.
- ConnectIsignalstoJ4 (I+)and J3 (I–),and theQ signalstoJ5 (Q–)and J6 (Q+).
- AdjustthedifferentialIorQ voltageleveltobe 1 Vpp by pressingMode → I/Q→ I/QOutput Control→ I/QOutput Atten→ enter9 → PressdB .The voltagecan be measured by an oscilloscope.Note thatthedifferentialvoltageistwicethesingle-endedvoltage.
- Setthecommon-mode voltage(CMV) ofE4438A to0.25V by pressingMode → I/Q→ I/QOutput Control→ Common Mode I/QOffset→ 250 → mV .Use a dc voltagemetertomonitorthedc common voltageattheinputsofIand Q, and fine-tunetheCMV settinguntilitismeasured tobe 250 mV. 4. Verifythatjumperconnectionofpin2 and pin3 on JP2 tosetdeviceinlowgainmode 5. Verifythatjumperconnectionofpin2 and pin3 atJP1 toensurethatpower down isnotengaged. 6. MonitorVcc atTP1 toensurethatVcc is3.3V.Verifythatthecurrentdraw isabout305 mA ± 15 mA. 7. Connecta spectrumanalyzertotheSMA connectormarked RFOUT (J7),and measure theTRF3705 outputpower atfLO + f1 = 1005.5MHz. The RF power must be 3.5dBm ± 1 dBm aftertheRF cable lossiscompensated.

3.2 Two-Tone OIP3 Test
The outputthird-orderinterceptpoint(OIP3)isa measure ofthelinearityperformanceofa nonlinear device.Itismeasured by a two-tonetest.The followingexercisemeasures OIP3 followingalllistedsteps inSection3.1. 1. PressMode → More (1of2)→ Multitone. 2. Highlightrow 11 forfrequencyoffset= 4.5MHz, pressToggle State,and thenpressApply Multitone toturnon a 4.5-MHz tone.Now, two toneswithequalamplitudeand frequencies,f1 = 4.5and f2 = 5.5MHz, areconfiguredforE4438C. 3. Measure theRF power ofbothRF tones,P0,whichmust be between –1.8dBm to–2.8dBm. 4. Measure thepower,PIM3,ofthethird-orderintermodulationproductassociatedwitheach RF tone.Itis approximately–66.5dBm afterthecablelosscompensation. 5. OIP3 can be calculatedby theequationOIP3 = P0 + (P0 – PIM3)/2.The worstOIP3 associatedwith eitherthelow-orthehigh-frequencytoneisselectedas theOIP3 ofthemodulator.The OIP3 at1 GHz isapproximately–29.8dBm ± 1 dBm. Cautionmust be takenforaccuratelymeasuringthesmallPIM3 when thelargeP0 ispresent.Itishelpfultoreducethespan and RBW settingsofthespectrum analyzerso thattheIM3 component isatleast20 dB above thenoisefloor,as wellas by increasing theRF attenuatorsettinguntilPIM3 isno longervaryingwithincreasedRF attenuationsetting.
