SAMPLE-AND-HOLD AMPLIFIERS SHA-IA,'lA,3,4,5,6"---=- GENERAL DESCRIPTION Analog Devices'wide selectionof Sample-and-Hold Amplifiers (SHA's) permitsthe selectionof a SHA thatiswell suitedfor virtuallyany application. Each type offersa unique combina- tionof speed, accuracy, and cost. SHA-IA The SHA-1A isa generalpurpose SHA offeringmoderately high speed and accuracy ata reasonableprice.Itsettlesto 0.01% inunder5IJ.S,and itsdrooprate(decaywhen inHOLD) isno greaterthan 50pV IIJ.S. SHA-2A The SHA-2A isa very fastSample-and-Hold module with ac- curacy and dynamic performance thatmake itappropriatefor use with very fast12 bitAID converters.Itsettlesto 0.1% in lessthan 300ns,and to 0.01% inlessthan 500ns. SHA-3 and SHA-4 These two SUA's were designedforhigh accuracyat longer hold times. They settleto 0.01% in75ps or less. The two differ inthatwhen switched from HOLD to SAMPLE, the SHA-4 settlesmore rapidlythan does the SHA-3. f l t l SHA-5 The SHA-5 isa low costgeneralpurpose sample-and-holdthat offersgood performance ata very low price.Itsettlesto 0.01% in 15ps,and has a droop rateof only 5pV Ims. SHA-6 The SHA-6 was designedas a companion to the high resolution ADC-16QA/D converter.Itwillacquirea signalto 16 bitac- curacy (0.00075%) in 5ms, and then hold itlong enough for the ADC-16Q to convertitto a 16 bitdigitalword. Itfeatures excellentgainstabilityover both time and temperatUre. The SHA IA isa fastsample-and-hold module with low droop rateand overallaccuracy compatible with 12-bitA/D conversionsystems opera- tingto %LSB accuracy. When inthe "sample" mode, the module appears as a fastamplifierwith 51lssettlingtime to 0.01%, 1nA input current, 251lVIC drift, and unity gain with :t10V at :t20mA output current capability. When in the "hold" mode, the droop rate is501lV/ms max, so the SHA IA willhold an input signalto 0.01% of fullscale(20V pop) for 40ms, sufficientfor 12-bitA/D conversion. SAMPLE TO HOLD CHARACTERISTICS Of prime importance in selectingSample-and-Hold amplifiersis the transitioncharacteristicswhen the module iscommanded intohold by the digitalcontrol line.A finitedelay willoccur between initiationof the hold command, and actualdisconnectionof the hold capacitorfrom the input buffer amplifier. In the SHA lA, thisdelay time is40ns maxi- mum. The uncertainty,or jitterover which thisdelay time willvary from cycle to cycle,as the module isrepeatedlycomma, nded intohold, is:t5ns.In most systems, the jitterspecificationisthe limitingfactoron overallsystem speed for a given accuracy, since fixeddelays can be re- moved by adjusting the system timing. The 5ns jitterspecification means the SHA IA can track a signal slewing up to 0.2V Ills, and "capture" thatsignalto within a 1mV accuracy for A/D conversion. OVERALL ACCURACY The SHA IA isguaranteed to have an overallthroughput non linearity of 2mV max over a :t10V input range, or 1mV max over 0 to +10V inputs. This specificationcombines the effectsof common mode errors. gain non linearityand sample to hold offsetnonlinearity.Itisno longer necessaryto guess at the combined effectsof individualerrorssincethe SHA IA specificationguarantees that itstotalnon-linearityerrorsare sufficientlylow to insure%LSB accuracy in 12-bitsystems. GROUNDING Many data acquisitionsystems sufferfrom digitalground induced noise appearing in the analog system. To counteractthisproblem, the SHA IA hasthreeseparategroundsystems. The digitalground isactual~ Iy one sideof a differentialamplifier, with the Sample/Hold digital controlinputbeingthe other inputof thisamplifier.Thiseffectively prevents digitalground noise from being impressed into the analog signalchannel. The power ground and analog input/outputgrounds are also separate,so that power supply ground noise isreduced by the re- jectioncoefficientsof the amplifiers, normally well over 9OdB. Ground connection instructionsaregivenin Figure 1. A DC path must existbetween the Analog, Digital, and power supply grounds. Multiplegrounds on signaland power return lines should be avoided. If possible, only one externalground should existon theAnalog ground system ANALOG iN CONTROL ANALOG iNGRO iNPUT ANALOG I - SIGNAL OIGITAL CONTROL SIGNAL -= DIG GRD ANALOGOUTPUT ANALDG OUT ANALOG GRD -15 PWR GRD -15 CO., I POWERSUPPL Y .15 0'5 = Fig. 1 SHA fA Connections and Grounding PRINTED IN U.S.A.CO98c-1 0-1 /80 ---- -..ANALOG W DEVICES OBSOLETE
