VisualDisplayof Angular Information ValvePositionIndication Antenoa Monitoring IndustrialControls GENERAL DESCRIPTION The SBCDI752, SBCDI753, SBCD1756 and the S~CD1757 aremodular, continuous trackingSynchro/Resolver-to-Digital converterswhich employ a type 2 servo loop. They are intended for use in both Industrialand Military applicationseitherfor displayingangular data directly,or for inputtingBCD information directlyinto a data processing system. The input signalscan be either3 wire synchro plus reference or 4 wire resolverplus reference,depending on the option. The ou tputswillbe presented inparallelBinary Coded Decimal (BCD). Particularattentionhas been paid in the design,to achieving the highesttrackingratesand accelerationspossible,com- patiblewith the resolutionand carrierfrequency used, while at the same time obtaining a high overallaccuracy. One of the outstanding featUresof these convertersisthe use made of precisionScott T and referencemicrotransformers. This has made itpossibleto include the transformerswithin the module, even for the 60Hz versionas well as providing facilitiesfor externalvoltagescaling. MODELS AVAILABLE The four Synchro-to-Digitalconvertersdescribed inthisdata sheet,differprimarilyin the areasof output format and power supply requirements. Model SBCD1752XYZ isa 13-bitplus sign.BCD output con- verter,giving-180.0° to -0.1° and +0.0 to +179.9° requiring tIS V and +5 V power supplies,and having an overallaccuracy of :to.2Degrees. BCD Output Synchro-to-0igitalConverters SBCD1752/1753/1756/1757I Model SBCD1753XYZ isa 14-bit,BCD output converter, giving0 to 359.9°, requiringt15V and +5V power supplies, and having an overallaccuracy of to.2 Degrees. Model SBCD1756XYZ isa 13-bitplus'sign,BCD output con- verter,giving-180.0° to -0.1° and +0.0 to +179.9" requiring +15V and +5V power supplies,and having an overallaccuracy of to.2 Degrees. The XYZ code definesthe option thus: X signifiesthe operating temperature range. Y signifiesthe referencefrequency. Z signifiesthe input voltage and range and whether itwill accept Synchro or Resolver information. More information about the option code isgiven under the heading "Ordering Information". DATA TRANSFER (ALL MODELS) The readinessof the convertersfor data transferisindicated by the stateof the BUSY pin. The voltage appearing on the BUSY pin consistsof a trainof pulses,atTTL levels,of length according to the option (see Specificationstable).The con- verterisbusy when the BUSY pin isat TTL "High" level.The pulsesoccur for increasingand decreasingcounts. The most suitabletime for transferringdata is400ns afterthe tra:lingedge of the BUSY pulse,and the times allowable for data transferare shown in the specification.Even at the maxi- mum speed of the option, these times willbe sufficientto transferdata before the next BUSY pulse occurs. This is achieved by taking the INHIBIT pin to a TTL Logic zero.If used, the INHIBIT should be applied 400ns afterthe trailing edge of the BUSY pulse.This willensure that the data on the output pins isvalid.The data should then be transferredand the INHIBIT releasedbefore the next BUSY pulse occurs. The worst case times allowable for data transferin thiscase are shown in the Specificationsunder the heading of "MAX DATA TRANSFER TIME (from 400ns After TrailingEdge of BUSY at Max Velocity)". Itshould be noted that the applica- tion of the INHlBlTwill not prevent the BUSY pulsesappear- ing on the BUSY pin, and thus ifthe INHIBIT isnot released by the time that the next BUSY pulse occurs,the BUSY pulse willstillappear, although the internalconverter loop willhave been opened. Under thiscondition,a worst case recovery time, equivalentto that of a step of 179 degrees may be encountered (seeSpec.).To avoid thisand to ensure validdata transfer,the system shown in the diagram isrecommended.

3 STATE

SuggestedExternalInterfaceCircuitry In caseswhere the converter isconnected to a data bus or used as a peripheral,the method outlined in the above diagram is recommended. The INHIBIT isnot necessary in thiscase,and the external "Enable" has control of the converter output. The AC1755 mounting card described laterin thisdata sheet contains the external components shown in the diagram. CONNECTING THE CONVERTER The power lines,which should not be reversed,should be con- nected to "+15V", "-15V" and "+5V" in the case of the SBCD1752 and SBCDI753, and to "+15V" and "+5V" in the case of the SBCDI756 and SBCDI757, with the common con- nection to "GND" in allcases. ItissuggestedthatO.lJlFand 6.8JlFcapacitorsbe placedin parallelfrom +15V to GND, from -15V to GND and from +5V to GND. The digitaloutput connections in the case of the SBCDI753 and SBCDI757 should be taken from the pins marked "0.1" through to "200"; thesevaluesbeing represented in degrees. In the case of the SBCDI752 and SBCDI756, the data should be taken from the pins marked "0.1" through to "100", these valuesalsobeing represented in degrees.In the case of these latterunitsthe "SIGN" pin willindicatethe polarityof the output, Logic "0" representingpositiveanglesand Logic "I" representingnegativeangles. SYNCHRO-TO-DIGIT AL CONVERTERS The SDC1700 isa low profile(0.4")converter with a 12-bit naturalbinary output. Itsoverallaccuracy is:t8.5arc-minutes, and the module containsinternaltransformersfor allreference frequency options including60Hz. The SDCI702 issimilarto the SDC1700 but has a to-bitnaturalbinary output and an overallaccuracy of :t22arc-minutes. The SDC1704 issimilarto the above two converters,but has a 14-bitnaturalbinary output and an overallaccuracy of :t2.0 arc-minutes:tILSB. TWO SPEED PROCESSORS The TSL1612 and the TSL1729 both produce one digitalout- put word up to 20 ~itsinlengthfrom theoutputs of 2 Synchro- to-Digitalconvertersin a coarse/finesystem.
