DS_S36SE3R305_02152007 DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS Input Source Impedance The imp edance of the in put so urce connecting to the DC/DC power modules will interact with the modules and affect the sta bility. A low ac-i mpedance input sou rce is recommended. If the source indu ctance is more than a few µH, we advise a dding a 10 to 1 00 µF ele ctrolytic capacitor (ESR < 0.7 Ω at 100 kHz) mounted close to the input of the module to improve the stability. Layout and EMC Considerations Delta’s DC/DC power modules are designed to operate in a wide va riety of systems and appli cations. Fo r design assistance with EMC compliance and related PWB layout issues, please contact Delta’s technical support team. An external inp ut filter module is availabl e for easi er EMC compliance design. A pplication n otes to a ssist designers i n add ressing these i ssues are pending to release. Safety Considerations The power m odule must be installed in compliance with the spa cing and sepa ration req uirements of the end-user’s safety agency standard, i.e., UL60950 , CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 6095 0-00 and EN60950: 2000 and IEC60950-1999, if the system in which the power module is to be used must meet safety agency requirements. Basic insulat ion ba sed o n 75 Vd c i nput is provided between the input and output of the module fo r the purpose of applying i nsulation re quirements when the input to this DC-to-DC converter is identified as TNV-2 or SELV. An additional evaluation is needed if the source is other than TNV-2 or SELV. When the input source is SELV circuit, the power module meets SELV (safety extra-lo w voltage ) req uirements. I f the input so urce is a ha zardous voltage which is gre ater than 60 Vd c and le ss th an or equal to 75 Vd c, for th e module’s out put to meet SELV requi rements, all of the following must be met: Š The input so urce must b e insulate d from the ac mains by reinforced or double insulation. Š The input terminals of the module are not operator accessible. Š If the metal base plate is g rounded, one Vi pin and one Vo pin shall also be grounded. Š A SELV reliability test is condu cted on the system where the module is used, in combination with the module, to ensure that under a single fault, hazardous voltage does not appear at th e module’s output. When install ed into a Cla ss II eq uipment (wit hout grounding), spaci ng co nsideration sh ould be given to the end -use installation, as the spa cing betwe en t he module and mounting surface have not been evaluated. The power module has extra-low voltage (ELV) outputs when all inputs are ELV. This p ower module i s no t internally fused. To a chieve optimum safety and system protection, an input line fuse is highly re commended. The safety ag encies require a normal-blow fuse with 5A maximum rating to be installed in the ungrounded lead. A lower rated fuse can be used based on th e maximum inru sh tra nsient energy and maximum input current. Soldering and Cleaning Considerations Post solder cleaning is usually the final board assembly process before the board or system undergoes electrical testing. Inad equate cleaning an d/or drying may lo wer the reliability of a power module and severely affect the finished circuit board assembly test. Adequate cleaning and/or d rying is e specially importa nt for un-encapsulated and/o r open fra me type p ower modules. Fo r assista nce on ap propriate sol dering a nd cleaning pro cedures, ple ase conta ct Delta’s techn ical support team.

DS_S36SE3R305_02152007 FEATURES DESCRIPTIONS Over-Current Protection The modul es include a n internal o utput over-curre nt protection ci rcuit, whi ch will endure cu rrent limiting for an unlimited duration d uring outp ut overloa d. If the output current exceeds the OCP set point, the modules will automatically shut down, and enter hiccup mode or latch mode, which is optional. For hiccu p mode, the module will try to rest art af ter shutdown. If the overload condition still exist s, the module will shut down again. This rest art trial will continue until the overload condition is corrected. For latch m ode, the m odule will la tch of f once i t shutdown. The latch is re set by either cycling the inp ut power or by toggling the on/off signal for one second. Over-Voltage Protection The module s include an internal outp ut over-volt age protection circuit, whi ch monitors the volt age on the output terminals. If this voltage exceeds the over-voltage set point, the module will shut down, and enter in hiccup mode or latch mode, which is optional. For hiccu p mode, the module will try to rest art af ter shutdown. If the overload condition still exist s, the module will shut down again. This rest art trial will continue until the over-voltage condition is corrected. For latch m ode, the m odule will la tch of f once i t shutdown. The latch is re set by either cycling the inp ut power or by toggling the on/off signal for one second. Over-Temperature Protection The over-te mperature protection consists of ci rcuitry that provide s protectio n from thermal damage. If the temperature exceeds the ov er-temperature thresh old the module will shut down, and enter in hiccup mode or latch mode, which is optional. For a uto-restart mode, the mod ule will m onitor temperature after shut do wn. On ce th e tempe rature i s within the spe cification, the module will be auto-restarted. For latch m ode, the m odule will la tch of f once i t shutdown. The latch is re set by either cycling the inp ut power or by toggling the on/off signal for one second. Remote On/Off The remote on/off feature on the mod ule can be either negative or positive logic. Negative logic turns the module on during a logic low and off during a logic hig h. Positive logic turns th e module s o n durin g a logic high a nd off during a logic low. Remote on/off can be controlled by a n external switch between the on/off termin al and th e V i(-) termi nal. The switch can be an open collector or open drain. For negative logic if the remote on/off feature is not used, please short the on/off pin to Vi(-). For positive logic if the remote on/off feature is not used, please leave the o n/off pin floating.
