This p roduct family provides u p to 36 watts of po wer or up to 12 A o f output cu rrent (for output voltage 1.8V or belo w) in a low profile 2”x1 ” industry sta ndard form fa ctor and pinout. The S2 4SA ope rates from a wide input range of 18V to 36V, output ranges from 1.2V to 12V. For 1.2V at 12A full load, the effi ciency is up to 85.5%. With creative desi gn technology a nd optimization of co mponent placem ent, these co nverters possess out standing ele ctrical and t hermal perf ormance, a s well a s extremely hig h reli ability u nder hig hly stressful o perating conditio ns. All models are prote cted fro m abno rmal input/output voltage and cu rrent conditions, and feature 2250V input/output isolation and basic insulation.

DS_S24SA1R212_05102006 This po wer module i s no t internally fused. To a chieve optimum saf ety and system prote ction, an input line fuse i s hi ghly recomme nded. T he safety age ncies require a no rmal-blow fuse with 5A maximum rating to be installed in the ungrounded lead. A lower rated fuse can b e used base d on th e maximum inru sh tra nsient energy and maximum input current. Soldering and Cleaning Considerations Post solder cleaning is usually the final board assembly process before the board or syst em undergo es electrical te sting. Inadeq uate cl eaning and/o r d rying may lowe r the reli ability of a powe r modul e a nd severely affect the finishe d circuit bo ard assembly t est. Adequate cleaning and/or drying is especially important for un -encapsulated an d/or o pen fra me type po wer modules. For assi stance on app ropriate sold ering a nd cleaning p rocedures, ple ase contact Delta’s techn ical support team. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS Input Source Impedance The imp edance of the inp ut sou rce co nnecting to the DC/DC p ower modul es will intera ct with the modul es and affe ct the sta bility. A low ac-i mpedance i nput source is re commended. If the source indu ctance is more than a few µH, we advise adding a 10 to 100 µF electrolytic capa citor (ES R < 0.7 Ω at 100 kHz) mounted close to the input of the module to improve the stability. Layout and EMC Considerations Delta’s DC/DC power modules are designed to operate in a wide variety of systems and a pplications. For design assi stance with EMC com pliance and relat ed PWB lay out issue s, ple ase c ontact Delt a’s t echnical support team. An exte rnal in put filter modul e is available fo r ea sier EMC comp liance de sign. Application n otes to assi st desig ners in addre ssing these issues are pending release. Safety Considerations The power module must be installed in compliance with the spa cing and sepa ration req uirements of the end- user’s safety agency standard if the system in which the power module is to be used must mee t safety agency requirements. When the input source is 60Vdc or below, the powe r module m eets SELV (safety e xtra-low voltage) requirements. If the input source is a hazardous voltage which is greater than 6 0 Vdc and less than or equal to
75 Vdc, for the module’s output to meet SELV
requirements, all of the following must be met: The in put source m ust be in sulated from an y hazardous voltage s, incl uding the a c mains, with reinforced insulation. One Vi pin a nd one Vo pi n are g rounded, or all the input and output pins are kept floating. The input terminals of the module are not operator accessible. A SELV reliability test is conducted on the syste m where the m odule i s use d to ensu re that under a single fault, hazard ous voltage do es not appe ar a t the module’s output. Do not gro und one of the input pins without grou nding one of the output pins. This connection may allow a non- SELV voltage to appea r betwee n the output pin and ground.
