1.2 Introduction

The ADS7953EVM isan evaluationmodule builttotheTIModularEVM System specification.Itcan be connectedtoany ofthemodularEVM systeminterfacecardsavailablefromTexas Instruments. The ADS7953EVM isavailableas a stand-aloneprintedcircuitboard(PCB) oras partofthe ADS7953EVM-PDK, whichincludesan MMB0 motherboardand software.As a stand-alonePCB, the ADS7953EVM isusefulforprototypingdesignsand firmware. ConsultSamtec athttp://www.samtec.comorcall 1-800-SAMTEC-9 fora varietyofmatingconnectoroptions.Samtec partnumber TMS-108-02-G-D providesaccesstoanaloginputchannelsCH8-CH15 atJ1. 5 VoltageReference

The ADS7953EVM has threesourcesforthereferencevoltage.Jumper W2 can selecttheREFP voltage fromeithertheREF5025(U3) orfroman externalsourceappliedtoP1.18.Jumper W3 can selectthe REFM voltagefromeithertheanalogground(AGND) orfroman externalsourceappliedtoP1.20.

6 EVM Operation

The followingsectionprovidesinformationon theanaloginput,digitalcontrol,and generaloperating conditionsoftheADS7953EVM.

6.1 Analog Input

Eightoftheanaloginputsources(channels0-7)can be applieddirectlytoP1 (toporbottomside)or throughsignal-conditioningmodules availableforthemodularEVM system.The additionaleightchannel sources(CH8-CH15) can be appliedtoconnectorJ1.The analoginputrangeon theEVM isidenticalto thatoftheinstalleddeviceand isdependenton theRANGE settingoftheADC (0to5V or0 to2.5V) Each inputsignalcan be configuredtoconnectdirectlytotheanaloginputsoftheADS7953 througha 33Ω seriesresistorwithan 0.027pFcapacitortoAGND. The inputtoCH0 can use theOPA365 bufferthat isprovided(defaultcondition,W4 jumperedpins1-2).Jumper W4 can be placedon pins2-3tobypass theunitygainbufferconfigurationoftheOPA365.

6.2 DigitalControl

The digitalcontrolsignalscan be applieddirectlytoP5 (toporbottomside).The modularADS7953EVM can alsobe connecteddirectlytoa DSP ormicrocontrollerinterfaceboard,such as the5-6KInterfaceor HPA-MCUInterfaceboardsavailablefromTexas Instruments.When purchasedas partofa PDK, the ADS7953EVM can be controlledby theMMB0. Fora listofcompatibleinterfaceand/oraccessoryboards fortheEVM ortheADS7953, see therelevantproductfolderon theTIwebsite.Allofthedigitalsignals arecontrolleddirectlywithpinson P2.

6.3 ADS7953EVM-PDK Power Supply

The analogportionoftheADS7953EVM can eitherbe powered by a 5V sourcegeneratedviaac adapter orby applyingthe+5VA totheconnectoron theMMB0 board.The MMB0 boardwillprovidethedigital5V and 3.3VtotheADS7953EVM. To provide+5VA totheADS7953EVM fromtheMMB0 board,make sure thejumperatJ13 (ontheMMB0) isclosedfrom+5V to+5VA.

6.4 DefaultJumper Settings

Figure2 shows thejumpersfoundon theEVM and therespectivefactorydefaultconditionsforeach. Thissectionprovidesinformationon usingtheADS7953EVM-PDK, includingsetup,programinstallation, and programusage. To preparetoevaluatetheADS7953 withtheADS7953EVM-PDK, completethefollowingsteps: Step1.InstalltheADCPro software(ifnotalreadyinstalled)on a PC. Step2.InstalltheADS7953EVM-PDK EVM plug-insoftware. Step3.Setup theADS7953EVM-PDK. Step4.Connecta properpower supplyoruse theincludedAC adapter. Step5.CompletetheNI-VISAUSB driverinstallationprocess. Step6.Run theADCPro software. Step7.CompletetheMicrosoftWindows USB driverinstallationprocess. Each taskisdescribedinthesubsequentsectionsofthisdocument.

7.1 InstallingtheADCPro Software

Do not connect the ADS7953EVM-PDK beforeinstallingthe softwareon a suitablePC. Failureto observethiscautionmay cause MicrosoftWindows to notrecognizetheADS7953EVM-PDK. The latestsoftwareisavailablefromtheTIwebsiteathttp://www.ti.com/.The ADCPro installerwillcheck forupdateswhen executed(ifconnectedtotheInternet),and thengivestheoptionofdownloadingand installingthelatestversion.See theADCPro Analog-to-DigitalConverterEvalutationSoftwareUsers Guide forinstructionson installingand usingADCPro. versionnumber,and incrementswithsoftwareversionreleases).Double-clickthefiletorunit;thenfollow theinstructionsshown.Also,use theADCPro Update Check featuretocheckfornewer versionsofthe ADS7953EVM-PDK plug-in,once one versionhas been installed. The softwareshouldnow be installed,buttheUSB driversmay nothave been loadedby thePC operating system.Thisstepwillcompletewhen theADCPro softwareisexecuted.

7.2 SettingUp theADS7953EVM-PDK

The ADS7953EVM-PDK containsboththeADS7953EVM and theMMB0 motherboard;however,the devicesareshippedunconnected.Followthesestepstosetup theADS7953EVM-PDK: Step1.Unpack theADS7953EVM-PDK kit. Step2.Setthejumpersand switcheson theMMB0 as shown inFigure3.

  • SettheBootMode switchtoUSB.
  • Connect+5V and +5VA on jumperblockJ13 (if+5V issuppliedfromJ14 +5VA).
  • Leave +5V and +VA disconnectedon jumperblockJ13.
  • IfthePDK willbe powered froman ac adapter,connectJ12.IfthePDK willbe powered throughthe terminalblock,disconnectJ12 (seeSection7.3ofthisdocument foradditionalpower supply connectiondetails).

7.2.1 About theMMB0

The MMB0 isa ModularEVM System motherboard.ItisdesignedaroundtheTMS320VC5507, a DSP withan onboardUSB interfacefromTexas Instruments.The MMB0 alsohas 16MB ofSDRAM installed. The MMB0 isnotintendedtobe used as a DSP developmentboard,and itisnotavailableseparately.TI cannotoffersupportfortheMMB0 exceptas partofan EVM-PDK kit.Forschematicsorotherinformation abouttheMMB0, contactTexas Instruments.

7.3 Connecting thePower Supply

The ADS7953EVM-PDK can be operatedwitha unipolar+5V supplyora combinationof+5V and +3.3V supplies. 7.3.1 Connecting an AC Adapter

An ac adaptercan be connectedtobarreljackJ2 on theMMB0. J2 islocatednexttotheUSB connector. The adaptermust output6V-7V dc.The connectormust be sleeve-negative,tip-positive.Itshouldhave a currentratingofatleast2A. Jumper J12 on theMMB0 connectsa wall-mountedpower supplytotheboard.To use thewall-mount supply,J12 must be shorted.Figure4 illustrateshow toconnectan ac adaptertotheMMB0. 7.3.2 Connecting a LaboratoryPower Supply

A laboratorypower supplycan be connectedthroughterminalblockJ14 on theMMB0, as shown in Figure5. To use a unipolarlabpower supplyconfiguration:

  • DisconnectJ12 on theMMB0.
  • Connecta +5V dc supplytothe+5VD terminalon J14.
  • Connectgroundofthedc supplytotheGND terminalon J14. Itisnotnecessarytoconnecta +5V dc supplyvoltagetothe+5VA terminalon J14 ifthe+5V/+5VA positionon J13 isshorted.

7.4 Running theSoftwareand Completing DriverInstallation

Note:The softwareiscontinuallyunderdevelopment.These instructionsand screenimages arecurrentat thetimeofthiswriting,butmay notexactlymatch futurereleases. The programforevaluatingtheADS7953EVM-PDK iscalledADCPro. Thisprogramuses plug-insto communicatewiththeEVM. The ADS7953EVM-PDK plug-inisincludedintheADS7953EVM-PDK package. The programcurrentlyrunsonlyon MicrosoftWindows platformsofWindows XP; Windows VistaisNOT supportedatthetimeofthiswriting. IfthisisthefirsttimeinstallingADCPro and theEVM plug-ins,followtheseprocedurestorunADCPro and completethenecessarydriverinstallation.

7.4.1 NI-VISAUSB Device DriverInstallation

  1. AftertheADCPro softwareisinstalled,applypower tothePDK and connecttheboardtoan available PC USB port. 2. The computershouldrecognizenew hardwareand begininstallingthedriversforthehardware. Figure6 throughFigure10 areprovidedforreferencetoshow theinstallationsteps.
  • Forthefirstscreen,Figure6,itisnotnecessarytosearchforthesoftware;ithas alreadybeen installedtothePC.

The evaluationsoftwareisbased on ADCPro, a programthatoperatesusinga varietyofplug-ins.(The ADS7953EVM plug-inisinstalledas describedintheprevioussection.) To use ADCPro, loadan EVM plug-inand a testplug-in.To loadan EVM plug-in,selectitfromtheEVM menu. To loada testplug-in,selectitfromtheTestmenu. To unloada plug-in,selecttheUnloadoption fromthecorrespondingmenu. Onlyone ofeach kindofplug-incan be loadedata time.Ifselectinga differentplugin,thepreviousplugin isunloaded.

8.1 Using theADS7953EVM-PDK Plug-in

The ADS7953EVM-PDK plug-inforADCPro providescompletecontroloverallsettingsoftheADS7953. It consistsofa tabbedinterface(seeFigure19),withdifferentfunctionsavailableon differenttabs.These controlsaredescribedinthissection. The usercan adjusttheADS7953EVM settingswhen notacquiringdata.Duringacquisition,allcontrols aredisabledand settingsmay notbe changed. When a settingischanged on theADS7953EVM plug-in,thesettingimmediatelyupdateson theboard. Settingson theADS7953EVM correspondtosettingsdescribedintheADS7953 productdatasheet;see theADS7953 datasheetfordetails.
