S_Q48DB12003_04182006 8 D DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS Input Source Impedance The imp edance of the i nput sou rce co nnecting to t he DC/DC power mod ules wi ll intera ct wit h the mod ules and affect the stability. A low ac-impedance input source is recommended. If the source indu ctance is more than a few µH, we advise addin g a 10 to 100 µF electrolytic capacitor (ESR < 0. 7 Ω at 100 kHz) mounted close to the input of the module to improve the stability. Layout and EMC Considerations Delta’s DC/DC power modules are designed to operate in a wide variety of systems and applications. For design assistance with EMC co mpliance an d related P WB layout issu es, please cont act Delta’s te chnical supp ort team. An ex ternal i nput f ilter mod ule is availa ble f or easier EMC compliance d esign. Application note s to assist designers in addressing these issues are pending release. Safety Considerations The power module must be installed in compliance with the sp acing and se paration req uirements of the end-user’s safety agen cy st andard, i.e., UL60 950, CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 60950-00 and EN60950:2000 and IEC60950-1999, if the syst em in which the po wer module is to be used must meet safety agency requirements. When the i nput so urce i s 60 Vd c o r b elow, th e po wer module me ets SEL V (safety extra-lo w volt age) requirements. If the input source is a hazardous voltage which is greater than 60 Vdc and less than or equal to 75 Vdc, for the module’s output to meet SELV requirements, all of the following must be met: Š The inp ut source mu st be insulated from any hazardous volt ages, inclu ding the ac mains, with reinforced insulation. Š One Vi pin and one Vo pin are grounded, or all the input and output pins are kept floating. Š The input terminals of the module are not operator accessible. Š If the met al baseplate is grounded the output must be also grounded. Š A SELV relia bility test is condu cted o n the system where the module i s u sed to en sure that und er a single fault, hazard ous voltage does not appear at the module’s output. Do not g round one of the input pins without grounding one of the o utput pins. This co nnection may allow a non-SELV voltage to appear between the output pin and ground. The power module has extra-low voltage (ELV) outputs when all inputs are ELV. This po wer module i s no t internally fused. T o achi eve optimum safety and system protection, an input line fuse is highly re commended. The safety ag encies require a normal-blow fuse with 7A maximum rating to be installed in the ungrounded lead. A lower rated fuse can be used based on th e maximum inru sh tra nsient energy and maximum input current. Soldering and Cleaning Considerations Post solder cleaning is usually the final board assembly process before the board or system undergoes electrical testing. Inadequate cleaning and/or drying may lower the reliability of a power module and severely af fect the finished circuit board assembly test. Adequate cleaning and/or drying is especially important for un-encapsulated and/or open frame type power modules. For assistance on app ropriate solde ring and cle aning procedu res, please contact Delta’s technical support team.

The mod ules includ e an internal o utput over-curre nt protection ci rcuit, whi ch will endure cu rrent limiting for an unlimited duration during outp ut overloa d. If the output current exceeds the OCP set point, the modules will automatically shut down (hiccup mode). The modules will try to restart after shutdown. If the overload condition still exists, the module will shut down again. Thi s restart trial will continue u ntil the overload condition is corrected. Over-Voltage Protection The modul es include an internal outp ut over-volt age protection circuit, whi ch monitors the volt age on the output terminals. If this voltage exceeds the over-voltage set point, the module will shut do wn and latch of f. The over-voltage latch is re set by either cy cling the in put power or by toggling the on/off signal for one second. Over-Temperature Protection The over-te mperature protection consists of ci rcuitry that provide s protectio n from thermal damage. If the temperature exceeds the ov er-temperature thresh old the module will shut down. The module will try to rest art af ter shut down. If the over-temperature condition still exists during restart, the module will shut down again. This rest art trial will continue until the temperature is within specification. Remote On/Off The remote o n/off feature on the mo dule can be eith er negative or positive logi c. Negative logic tu rns the module on during a logic low and off during a logic high. Positive logic turns th e modules on during a lo gic high and off during a logic low. Remote on/off can b e controlled by an external switch between the on/off terminal and the V i(-) terminal. The switch can be an open collector or open drain. For ne gative logic if the remote o n/off feature is not used, plea se sho rt the on /off pin to V i(-). Fo r po sitive logic if the remote on/of f feature i s n ot use d, ple ase leave the on/off pin to floating.
