SNOSBV5C –FEBRUARY 1995–REVISED APRIL 2013 www.ti.com FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION Thisproductisspecificallydesignedto drivemultiplexedor non-multiplexedhighvoltagealphanumericor dot matrixvacuum fluorescent(VF)displays.Charactergenerationisdone externallyinthemicroprocessor, witha serialdatapathtothedisplaydriver. The MM58342 uses threesignals,DATA IN,CLOCK and ENABLE, where ENABLE acts as an externalload signal.Displayblankingcan be achievedby means of the BLANKING CONTROL input, and a logic“1” willturnoffallsectionsof the display.A blockdiagram of the MM58342 is shown inBlockDiagram. Figure1 shows thepinoutoftheMM58342 device, where output1 (pin12)isequivalenttobit1 (i.e.,thefirstbit of data to be loaded intothe shiftregisterfollowingENABLE high).A logic“1” at the inputwillturnon the correspondingdisplaydigit/segment/dotoutput. A significantreductionindiscreteboardcomponents can be achievedby use oftheMM58342, because external pull-downresistorsarenotrequired.Due tothenatureoftheoutputstage, bothitson and offimpedance values vary as a functionof the displayvoltageapplied. However, Figure3 and Figure4 show thatthisoutput impedance willremainconstantfora fixedvalueofdisplayvoltage. Figure5 demonstratesthecriticaltimingrequirementsbetween CLOCK and DATA IN fortheMM58342. To clear(reset)thedisplaydriveratpower on orany time, thefollowingflushingroutinemay be used.Withthe enable signalhigh, clockin 20 zeroes.Drive the enable signallow and the displaywillbe blank.Itis recommended toclearthedriveratpower on. InFigure6,theENABLE signalactsas an envelope, and onlywhilethissignalisata logic“1” does thecircuit acceptCLOCK inputsignals.Data istransferredand shiftedintheinternalshiftregisteron therisingclockedge, i.e.,“0”–“1”transition.When theENABLE signalgoes low, thecontentsoftheshiftregistersarelatched, and the displaywillshow new data.Duringdatatransfer, thedisplaywillshow olddata.DATA OUT isalsoprovidedon theMM58342 beingoutputon thefallingedge. At any time, thedisplaymay be blankedunderprocessorcontrol, usingtheBLANKING CONTROL input. Figure7 shows a schematicdiagramofa microprocessor-basedsystem where theMM58342 isused toprovide the griddrivefora 40-digit2 line5 x 7 multiplexedvacuum fluorescent(VF) display. The anode driveinthis example isprovidedby anothermember ofthehighvoltagedisplaydriverfamily, namely theMM58348, which does notrequirean extremelygeneratedloadsignal.
