APPLICATION INFORMATION

BENEFITS OF THE LMC7221 TINY COMPARATOR Size The smallfootprintof the 5-PinSOT-23 packaged TinyComparator,(0.120x 0.118 inches,3.05 x 3.00 mm) saves space on printedcircuitboards, and enablethedesignofsmallerelectronicproducts.Because theyare easiertocarry, many customersprefersmallerand lighterproducts. Height The height(0.056inches,1.43mm) oftheTinyComparatormakes itpossibletouse itinPCMCIA typeIIIcards. SimplifiedBoard Layout The Tiny Comparator can simplifyboard layoutin severalways. First,by placinga comparator where comparatorsareneeded, insteadofroutingsignalstoa dualorquad device, longpc tracesmay be avoided. By usingmultipleTinyComparatorsinsteadofdualsorquads, complex signalroutingand possiblycrosstalkcan be reduced. Low Supply Current The typical7 μA supplycurrentoftheLMC7221 extendsbatterylifeinportableapplications, and may allowthe reductionofthesizeofbatteriesinsome applications. Wide VoltageRange The LMC7221 ischaracterizedat15V, 5V and 2.7V.Performancedataisprovidedatthesepopularvoltages. Thiswide voltagerangemakes theLMC7221 a good choicefordeviceswhere thevoltagemay varyoverthelife ofthebatteries. DigitalOutputs RepresentingSignalLevel Comparatorsprovidea highorlow digitaloutputdependingon thevoltagelevelsofthe(+)and (−)inputs. This makes comparatorsusefulforinterfacinganalog signalsto microprocessorsand otherdigitalcircuits. The LMC7221 can be thoughtofas a one-bita/dconverter. Open DrainOutput The open drainoutputisliketheopen collectoroutputofa logicgate.Thismakes theLMC7221 veryusefulfor mixed voltagesystems. SNOS748E –SEPTEMBER 1999–REVISED MARCH 2013 www.ti.com DrivingLEDs (LightEmittingDiodes) With a 5 voltpower supply, the LMC7221's outputsinkingcurrentcan drivesmall, high efficiencyLEDs for indicatorand testpointcircuits. The smallsizeof the Tinypackage makes iteasy to findspace to add this featuretoeven compact designs. Inputrange toBeyond RailtoRail The inputcommon mode rangeoftheLMC7221 isslightlylargerthantheactualpower supplyrange.Thiswide inputrangemeans thatthecomparatorcan be used tosense signalsclosetothepower supplyrails.Thiswide inputrange can make designeasierby eliminatingvoltagedividers, amplifiers, and otherfrontend circuits previouslyused tomatch signalstothelimitedinputrangeofearliercomparators.Thisisusefultopower supply monitoringcircuitswhichneed tosense theirown power supply, and compare ittoa referencevoltagewhichis closetothepower supplyvoltage. The wide inputrangecan alsobe usefulforsensingthevoltagedropacrossa currentsense resistorforbatterychargers. Zero Crossing Detector SincetheLMC7221's common mode inputrangeextendsbelow groundeven when powered by a singlepositive supply, itcan be used withlargeinputresistorsas a zerocrossingdetector. Low InputCurrentsand High InputImpedance These characteristicsallowtheLMC7221 tobe used tosense highimpedance signalsfromsensors. They also make itpossibletouse theLMC7221 intimingcircuitsbuiltwithlargevalueresistors.Thiscan reducethepower dissipationoftimingcircuits. For verylongtimingcircuits, usinghighvalueresistorscan reducethesizeand cost oflargevaluecapacitorsforthesame R-C timeconstant. DirectSensor Interfacing The wide inputvoltagerangeand highimpedance oftheLMC7221 may make itpossibletodirectlyinterfacetoa sensorwithouttheuse ofamplifiersor biascircuits.Incircuitswithsensorswhich can produceoutputsinthe tenstohundredsofmillivolts,theLMC7221 can compare thesensorsignalwithan appropriatelysmallreference voltage.Thismay be done closetogroundorthepositivesupplyrail.Directsensorinterfacingmay eliminatethe need foran amplifierforthesensorsignal.Eliminatingtheamplifiercan save cost, space, and designtime. LOW VOLTAGE OPERATION Comparatorsare thecommon devicesby which analogsignalsinterfacewithdigitalcircuits. The LMC7221 has been designedtooperateatsupplyvoltagesof2.7V withoutsacrificingperformancetomeet thedemands of3V digitalsystems. At supplyvoltagesof 2.7V,the common-mode voltagerange extends200 mV (ensured)below the negative supply.Thisfeature, inadditiontothecomparatorbeingabletosense signalsnearthepositiverail, isextremely usefulinlowvoltageapplications. Open drainoutputsaretheCMOS equivalentofopen collectoroutputs. OUTPUT SHORT CIRCUIT CURRENT The LMC7221 has shortcircuitprotectionof40 mA. However, itisnotdesignedtowithstandcontinuousshort circuits, transientvoltageorcurrentspikes, orshortstoany voltagebeyond thesupplies.A resistorinserieswith theoutputshouldreducetheeffectofshorts. For outputswhichsend signalsoffPC boardsadditionalprotection devices, such as diodestothesupplyrails, and varistorsmay be used. INPUT PROTECTION Ifinputsignalsarelikelytoexceed thecommon mode rangeoftheLMC7221, oritislikelythatsignalsmay be presentwhen power isoff, damage totheLMC7221 may occur.Largevalue(100kΩ toM Ω)inputresistorsmay reducethelikelihoodofdamage by limitingtheinputcurrents.SincetheLMC7221 has verylow inputleakage currents, theeffecton accuracywillbe small.Additionalprotectionmay requiretheuse ofdiodes,as shown in Figure18.Note thatdiodeleakagecurrentmay affectaccuracyduringnormaloperation.
