APPLICATION INFORMATION
BenefitsoftheLMC7211 TinyComparator saves space on printedcircuitboards, and enablethedesignofsmallerelectronicproducts.Because theyare easiertocarry, many customersprefersmallerand lighterproducts. Height. The height(0.056inches,1.43mm) oftheTinyComparatormakes itpossibletouse itinPCMCIA type IIIcards. SimplifiedBoard Layout. The TinyComparatorcan simplifyboard layoutinseveralways. First,by placinga comparatorwhere comparatorsare needed, insteadofroutingsignalstoa dualor quad device, longpc traces may be avoided. By usingmultipleTinyComparatorsinsteadofdualsorquads, complex signalroutingand possiblycrosstalkcan be reduced. Low Supply Current. The typical7 μA supply currentof the LMC7211 extends batterylifein portable applications, and may allowthereductionofthesizeofbatteriesinsome applications. Wide Voltage Range. The LMC7211 ischaracterizedat 15V, 5V and 2.7V.Performancedata isprovidedat these popularvoltages. This wide voltagerange makes the LMC7211 a good choicefordeviceswhere the voltagemay varyoverthelifeofthebatteries. DigitalOutputs RepresentingSignalLevel.Comparatorsprovidea highorlow digitaloutputdependingon the voltagelevelsof the (+) and (−) inputs. This makes comparatorsusefulforinterfacinganalog signalsto microprocessorsand otherdigitalcircuits. The LMC7211 can be thoughtofas a one-bita/dconverter. Push-PullOutput.The push-pulloutputoftheLMC7211 iscapableofbothsourcingand sinkingmilliamplevel currentseven ata 2.7voltsupply.Thiscan allowtheLMC7211 todrivemultiplelogicgates. DrivingLEDs (LightEmittingDiodes). With a 5 voltpower supply,theLMC7211's outputsinkingcurrentcan drivesmall, highefficiencyLEDs forindicatorand testpointcircuits. The smallsizeoftheTinypackage makes it easy tofindspace toadd thisfeaturetoeven compact designs. Inputrange to Beyond Railto Rail. The inputcommon mode rangeoftheLMC7211 isslightlylargerthanthe actualpower supplyrange.Thiswide inputrangemeans thatthecomparatorcan be used tosense signalsclose to the power supplyrails. This wide inputrange can make design easierby eliminatingvoltagedividers, amplifiers, and otherfrontend circuitspreviouslyused to match signalsto the limitedinputrange of earlier comparators.Thisisusefultopower supplymonitoringcircuitswhichneed tosense theirown power supply, and compare ittoa referencevoltagewhichisclosetothepower supplyvoltage. The wide inputrangecan alsobe usefulforsensingthevoltagedropacrossa currentsense resistorforbatterychargers. Zero Crossing Detector.SincetheLMC7211's common mode inputrange extendsbelow ground even when powered by a singlepositivesupply, itcan be used withlargeinputresistorsas a zerocrossingdetector. Low InputCurrentsand High InputImpedance. These characteristicsallowtheLMC7211 tobe used tosense highimpedance signalsfromsensors. They alsomake itpossibletouse theLMC7211 intimingcircuitsbuiltwith largevalueresistors.Thiscan reducethepower dissipationoftimingcircuits. For verylongtimingcircuits, using highvalueresistorscan reducethesizeand costoflargevaluecapacitorsforthesame R-C timeconstant. DirectSensor Interfacing. The wide inputvoltagerange and highimpedance of the LMC7211 may make it possibleto directlyinterfaceto a sensorwithoutthe use of amplifiersor biascircuits. In circuitswithsensors which can produce outputsinthe tensto hundreds of millivolts, the LMC7211 can compare the sensorsignal withan appropriatelysmallreferencevoltage.Thismay be done closetogroundorthepositivesupplyrail.Direct sensorinterfacingmay eliminatethe need foran amplifierforthe sensorsignal.Eliminatingthe amplifiercan save cost, space, and designtime. Low VoltageOperation Comparatorsare thecommon devicesby which analogsignalsinterfacewithdigitalcircuits. The LMC7211 has been designedtooperateatsupplyvoltagesof2.7V withoutsacrificingperformancetomeet thedemands of3V digitalsystems. www.ti.com SNOS746F –MAY 2004–REVISED JANUARY 2013 Figure5. Measurement oftheShoot-Through Current From Figure5, the shoot-throughcurrentforthe LMC7211 can be calculatedto be 0.2 mA (typical),and the durationis1 μs.The valuesneeded forthebypasscapacitorscan be calculatedas follows: Area ofΔ= ½ (1μs × 200 μA) = 100 pC The capacitorneeds tosupply100 picocolumb. To avoidlargeshiftsinthecomparatorthresholddue tochanges inthevoltagelevel, thevoltagedropatthebypasscapacitorshouldbe limitedto100 mV orless. The charge needed (100 picocolumb)and the allowablevoltagedrop (100 mV) willgive us the minimum capacitorvaluerequired. ΔQ = C (ΔV) C = ΔQ/ΔV = 100 picocolumb/100mV C = 10-10/10-1 = 10-9 = 1 nF = 0.001μF 10-9 = 1 nF = 0.001μF The voltagedropof∼100 mV willcause a thresholdshiftinthecomparator.Thisthresholdshiftwillbe reduced by thepower supplyrejectionratio,(PSRR). The PSRR which isapplicablehere isnottheDC valueofPSRR (∼80 dB),buta transientPSRR whichwillbe usuallyabout20 dB–40 dB, dependingon thecircuitand thespeed ofthetransient.Thiswillresultinan effectivethresholdshiftofabout1 mV to10 mV. For precisionand levelsensingcircuits, itisgenerallya good goalto reduce the voltagedeltaon the power supplytoa valueequaltoorlessthanthehysteresisofthecomparatorcircuit.Iftheabove circuitwas tobe used with50 mV of hysteresis, itwould be reasonableto increasethe bypass capacitorto 0.01 μF to reduce the voltagedeltato10 mV. Largervaluesmay be usefulforobtainingmore accurateand consistentswitching. Note thattheswitchingcurrentofthecomparatorcan spreadtootherpartsoftheboard as noise. The bypass capacitorreducesthisnoise.Forlownoisesystemsthismay be reasontomake thecapacitorlarger. For non-precisioncircuits,such as usinga comparatortodetermineifa push-buttonswitchison oroff, itisoften cheaperand easiertouse a largervalueofhysteresisand a smallvalueorbypass capacitance. The low shoot- throughcurrentoftheLMC7211 can allowtheuse ofsmallerand lessexpensivebypasscapacitorsinnon-critical circuits. SNOS746F –MAY 2004–REVISED JANUARY 2013 www.ti.com Output ShortCircuitCurrent The LMC7211 has shortcircuitprotectionof40 mA. However, itisnotdesignedtowithstandcontinuousshort circuits, transientvoltageorcurrentspikes, orshortstoany voltagebeyond thesupplies.A resistorinserieswith theoutputshouldreducetheeffectofshorts. For outputswhichsend signalsoffPC boardsadditionalprotection devices, such as diodestothesupplyrails, and varistorsmay be used. Hysteresis Iftheinputsignalisveryslow or verynoisy, thecomparatoroutputmighttripseveraltimesas theinputsignal passes throughthethreshold.Usingpositivefeedbacktoadd hysteresistotheswitchingcan reduceoreliminate thisproblem. The positivefeedbackcan be added by a highvalueresistor(RF).Thiswillresultintwo switching thresholds, one forincreasingsignalsand one fordecreasingsignals.A capacitorcan be added acrossR F to increasetheswitchingspeed and providemore shorttermhysteresis.Thiscan resultingreaternoiseimmunity forthecircuit. With PositiveFeedback (Hysteresisor Memory) InputProtection Ifinputsignalsare liketoexceed thecommon mode range oftheLMC7211, or itislikelythatsignalsmay be presentwhen power isoff, damage totheLMC7211 may occur.Largevalue(100kΩ toM Ω)inputresistorsmay reducethelikelihoodofdamage by limitingtheinputcurrents.SincetheLMC7211 has verylow inputleakage currents, theeffecton accuracywillbe small.Additionalprotectionmay requiretheuse ofdiodes,as shown in Figure9.Note thatdiodeleakagecurrentmay affectaccuracyduringnormaloperation. The R-C timeconstantof R IN and thediodecapacitancemay alsoslowresponsetime. Green (RoHS & no Sb/Br): TI defines "Green" to mean Pb-Free (RoHS compatible), and free of Bromine (Br) and Antimony (Sb) based flame retardants (Br or Sb do not exceed 0.1% by weight in homogeneous material) (3) MSL, Peak Temp. - The Moisture Sensitivity Level rating according to the JEDEC industry standard classifications, and peak solder temperature. (4) There may be additional marking, which relates to the logo, the lot trace code information, or the environmental category on the device. (5) Multiple Device Markings will be inside parentheses. Only one Device Marking contained in parentheses and separated by a "~" will appear on a device. If a line is indented then it is a continuation of the previous line and the two combined represent the entire Device Marking for that device. (6) Lead/Ball Finish - Orderable Devices may have multiple material finish options. Finish options are separated by a vertical ruled line. Lead/Ball Finish values may wrap to two lines if the finish value exceeds the maximum column width.
