Delphi Series IPM, Non-Isolated, Integrated Point-of-Load Power Modules: 8V~14V input, 0.9~5V and 4A Output Current The Delp hi Series IPM12C no n-isolated, fully integrated Point-of-Load (POL) power modules, are the latest o fferings from a world lead er in powe r sy stems technology and m anufacturing -- Delta Ele ctronics, Inc. This pro duct fa mily provides up to 4A of output cu rrent or 20W o f output power in an industry st andard, compact, IC-like, molded p ackage. It is highly integrated and does not requi re external co mponents to provide the point-of-l oad function. A copper pad on the back of the module, i n close contact with the internal heat di ssipation components, provides ex cellent thermal performance. The assembly process of the modules is fully automated with no ma nual assem bly involved. Th ese converters possess outstanding electrical and thermal performance, as well as extremely high reliability under highly stressful operating conditions. IPM12C op erates from an 8V~1 4V source a nd provide s a programmable output voltage of 0.9V to 5V. The IPM product family is available in both a SMD or SIP package. OPTION SMD or SIP package

DS_IPM12C0A0R04_08242006 DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS Safety Considerations For safety-agency approval the power module must be installed in compliance with the spacing and separation requirements of the end-use safety agency standards. For the co nverter output to be con sidered meeting the requirements of safety extra-lo w volt age (SEL V), the input must meet SELV requirements. The power module has extra-low voltage (ELV) outputs when all inputs are ELV. The input to these unit s is to be provided with a maximum 10A time-delay fuse in the ungrounded lead. Remote On/Off The IPM se ries power modules have a n On/Off control pin for output volt age remote On/Of f ope ration. The On/Off pin is an open coll ector/drain logic input si gnal that is referenced to ground. When On/Off control pin is not used, leave the pin unconnected. The remote on/off pin i s internally connected to +Vin through an internal pull-up resistor. Figure 29 shows the circuit configuration fo r a pplying the remote on/of f pin. The module will execute a sof t st art ON when t he transistor Q1 is in the off state. The typical ri se for this re mote on/off pin at the output voltage of 2.5V and 5.0V are shown in Figure 17 and 18. Vo On/Off Vin GND IPM RL Figure 29: Remote on/off implementation FEATURES DESCRIPTIONS Over-Current Protection To provide prote ction in an output over load fa ult condition, the unit is equip ped with internal over-current protection. When the over-cu rrent prote ction is triggered, the unit enters hiccup m ode. The u nits operate normally once the fault condition is removed. Pre-Bias Startup Capability The IPM would perform the monotoni c startup into the pre-bias lo ads; so as to avoid a system volt age d rop occur upon a pplication. In compl ex dig ital system s an external volt age can so metimes be presented at the output of the module during power on. This voltage may be feedba ck through a multi-supply logic comp onent, such a s FP GA or ASIC. Another way might be via a clamp di ode as p art of a powe r up se quencing implementation. Output Voltage Programming The output v oltage of IPM can be p rogrammed to any voltage between 0.8Vdc and 5Vdc by conne cting one resistor (shown as Rtrim in Figure 30, 31) between the TRIM and GND pins of the module to trim up (0.9V ~ 5V) and between the Trim and +Output to trim down (0.8V ~ 0.9V). Without this external resistor, the output voltage of the module i s 0.9 Vdc. T o calculate the value of the resistor Rtrim for a p articular output vol tage Vo, plea se use the following equation: Trim up 3.752 Rtrim = Vout –0.9 - 0.261 (KΩ) Trim Down 1.072 Rtrim = 0.9 - Vout - 5.621 (KΩ) Rtrim is the external resistor in KΩ Vout is the desired output voltage
DS_IPM12C0A0R04_08242006 The amo unt of powe r del ivered by th e modul e is the voltage at th e output terminals multiplied by the o utput current. When using the trim feature, the output volt age of the modul e can be in creased, whi ch at the sa me output curre nt would incre ase the po wer output of the module. Care sho uld b e t aken to ensure that the maximum output powe r of the module must not excee d the maximum rated power (Vo.set x Io.max ≤ P max). Voltage Margining Output voltage margining can be implemented in the IPM modules by connecting a resistor, Rmargin-up, from the Trim pin to the ground pin for margining-up the output voltage and by connecting a resistor, Rmargin-down, from the Trim pin to the output pin for marg ining-down. Figure 33 sh ows the circuit configuration fo r output volt age marginin g. If unused, leave the trim pin unconnected. Vo On/Off Vin GND Trim IPM Rmargin-up Rmargin-down Rtrim Figure 33: Circuit configuration for output voltage margining FEATURE DESCRIPTIONS (CON.) Table 1 provides Rtrim values required for some common output voltages, while Table 2 provid es value of externa l voltage so urce, Vtrim, for the same common o utput voltages.
