GENE~L DESCRIPTION The HDL-3805 D/A Converterisa thick-filmhybrid which includesthreeAD9700 IC D/A convertersand threeECL random accessmemory (RAM) look-uptablesin a singlepackage.Itis thesmallest,lowest-powerRGB (red,green,blue)videogenerator availabletovideodesignersofhigh-resolutionrasterscangraphics displays. With eightbitsof Gray scaleresolutionper channel,theuser has a totalpaletteof 16.7millioncolors.Sinceeach of the three DACs has a 256 x 8 RAM, a totalof256 colorsisavailableon each sweep. The writespeed of the RAMS issufficientlyhigh to rewritethecolormap completelyduring verticalretrace,or update smallerblocksofdata during horizontalretrace. ABSOLUTE IRE OUTPUT Composite functionsin the HDL unitsincludeRed Sync, Green Sync, Blue Sync, Composite Blanking,ReferenceWhite, and 10% Bright.The abilityof thedevicestodrive75flloadsdirectly with a IV composite signalcombines with thesefunctionsto assuretheoutputswillbe compatiblewith thegeneralrequirements of EIA StandardsRS-170 and RS-343. The model HDL-3806 D/A Converterisa variationof the HDL-3805 which includessynchronous compositefunctionsand offersincreasedflexibilityforthe designerina pin-for-pincom- patiblepackage. Allmodels of the HDL-3805 and HDL-3806 arehoused in46- pin metal hybrid packages.Standard versionsareratedover an operatingtemperaturerange of - 25°C to + 85°C;forunitswith thisrangeand militaryscreening,consultfactory. 10% BRIGHT LEVEL --- ----REfERENCE WHITE LEVEL IV,wl REFERENCE BLACK LEVEL IV"I -- COMPOSITE BLANKING LEVEL IV,' 100 IRE UNITS. 71<mV IdealizedComposite Output Waveform Information furnished by Analog Devices isbelievedto be accurate and reliable.However, no responsibilityisassumed by Analog Devices for itsuse;nor for any infringementsof patentsor other rightsof third partieswhich may resultfrom itsuse.No licenseisgrantedby implica- tion or otherwiseunder any patent or patent rightsof Analog Devices. Refer to theblock diagram of the HDL-380S/3806 D/A Converter. As shown, the unitiscomprised of threeeach random access memories (RAMs) and AD9700 currentoutput D/A converters. These components operateas threepairsin controllingthe red, green,and blue (RGB) analogoutputsof the device;and gready simplifytheinterfacebetween the frame buffersand themonitor in rasterscan graphicssystems. RGB digitaldatainformationcan be loadedintothe RAMs during retraceperiods.During horizontalretraceintervals, smallblocksofdata can be entered;the complete colormap can be rewrittenduring the longerverticalretracetimes. Intensitiesforthe RGB outputsareupdated by a single8-bit addressword and a Strobesignalduring the RAM read operations. The routingofthedigitaldatatothecorrectRAM and itsassociated D/A iscontrolledby the digitalAddress inputSignals;and by the Red Chip Select,Green Chip Select,Blue Chip Select,and Write Enable signals. In additiontodigitalinputand addressinformation,the userof the HDI-380S/3806 alsohas controlover compositefunctions with Red Sync, Green Sync, Blue Sync, Composite Blanking, ReferenceWhite, and 10% Bright. 256 x RAM AD9700 D/A CONVERTER *BUFFER REPLACED WITH D-TYPE REGISTERS CLOCKED BY PIN 22 STROBE IN HDG-3806. SYNCHRONOUS VS. ASYNCHRONOUS OPERATION Asynchronous compositeoperationispossiblewith theHDL-380S becauseitscompositeinputsareunlatched;the HDL-3806, on the otherhand, offerssynchronousoperationwith latchedcom- positeinputs. There aretwo situationswhich requiresynchronouscomposite operationforbestdisplayquality. The firstof theseisforapplicationsinwhich the rasterfieldis smallerthan the visiblefaceof the displaytube.Ifoperated asynchronously,any timingmismatch between thepixelclock (strobeinput)and the compositeblankingcontrolcould cause the pixelatthe end of each lineto be partiallyilluminated. The second situationoccurswhen the 10% brightfunctionis used foroverlayon the display.Ifthisoverbrightsignalisused atpixelrates,itmust be synchronizedwith the pixelclock. Figure 3,the Composite Blanking Timing Diagram, illustrates the timingforboth synchronous and asynchronouscomposite inputs. When operatingsynchronously,the Composite Blankinginput must returnto the digital"I" logiclevelone pixelclockperiod beforethe displaylinebegins.This isnecessarybecauseofthe delaytime of the composite functionregister.The timingof the change to Logic "I" isimportanttoavoidthe possibilityof losingthe firstpixelof the new line. In Figure 3, some strobepulsesareshown as "first"or "last" strobestohelpillustratesynchronousvs.asynchronousoperation. The userneeds to remember itisthe leadingedge of the strobe which causesthe edge-triggeredAD9700 convertersto operate. The D/A inputsshown in Figure 3 arethe digitalinputsapplied to the built-inregistersof the internalAD9700 D/A converters. These areasynchronousforthe HDL-380S; and'synchronous forboth models of the HDL-3806. Lt>ex) <.0 cb a;u '~==~ REGISTER INPUT DATA STROBE II II II (PIXElCLOCK)~ U. ORDERING INFORMATION
There isone standardmodel of the HDL-380S D/A converter, and two model numbers forthe HDL-3806 version.Specifically, the designationsare HDL-380SBM; and HDL-3806BM and HDL-3806CM. The HDL-380S unitoperateswith unlatched asynchronouscompositeinputs;and both models oftheHDL-3806 operatewith latchedsynchronous signals. In terms of speed,the HDL-380SBM and HDL-3806BM are identicalwith minimum update ratesof 8SMHz, and typical word ratesof IOOMHz. The HDL-3806CM isspecifiedata minimum update rateof l1SMHz. Standard unitsoperateover a casetemperaturerangeof - 25°C to + 85°C; unitswith the same temperaturerangeand military screeningarealsoavailable.For these,consultthe factory. - ~~ <i. uj ::> a:a.. -6- D/A INPUT] 0 I X '[(HDL-38051 --- D/AINPUT] X \\ I '[IHDL-3806) -- Figure3.
