Fixed Reference or MultiplyingOperation TTL/DTL or CMOS Compatible Current or Voltage Output User SelectedOutput Ranges Small Size -2" x 2" x 0.4" (51 x 51 x 10mm) GENERAL DESCRIPTION The DACI009 isa lowtost, multipurpose digital-to-analog converterwhich can be readilyadapted to a varietyof appli- cations. This versatile12 bitdevicecan be programmed for fixedreferenceor multiplyingoperationand for currentor voltageoutput. Itwillinterfacewith CMOS or DTL/TTL logic systems and itfeaturesconvenient positive-truelogicinputs. Performance specificationsinclude :tl/zLSBlinearityerror, 411secsettlingtime for a 10V output step, and a gain tempera- ture coefficientof 11ppm/ C. OUTPUT VERSATILITY The DACI009 can be used ineitherthe voltageoutput or currentoutput mode. When itisused as a voltageoutput de- vice, anyone of the fivefollowingoutput rangesare available: Unipolar 0 to -5V, 0 to -10V Bipolar :t2.5V,:t5V,:tl0V Externaljumpers atthe module pins determine the output amplifierfeedback resistance.Offsetof exactlyone-halffull scalefor bipolarapplicationsisprovided by connecting a jumper between an internalreferencesource and the summing junctionof the output amplifier. As a currentoutput devicethe DACI009 can be used to drive an externalop amp. Internalfeedback resistorscan alsobe used with thisexternalop amp to assureoptimum temperature trackingof components. Information furnished by Analog Devices is believedto be accurate and reliable. However, no responsibilityisassumed by Analog Devices for itsuse;nor for any infringementsof patentsor other rightsof third partieswhich may resultfrom itsuse. No licenseisgrantedby implica- tion or otherwiseunder any patent or patent rightsof Analog Devices. DIGITAL INPUTS The DACI009 usesthe positive-truelogicconvention pre- resultsin the maximum absolutevalue analogoutput). The logiclevelsof: +2.0V « Logic "1" « + 15V OV « Logic "0" « +0.8V are compatible with both DTL/TTL and CMOS systems. When used with CMOS logic, the drivinggate for each input bitmust be capable of sinkingatleastImA. For unipolaroutputs eitherBinary or BCD code may be used;forbipolaroutputs OffsetBinary code isavailable. MUL TlPL YING CAP ABILITY The DACI009 can be readilyconfiguredas eithera one or two-quadrant multiplyingDAC. When used in thismanner the one-quadrant analog input of 0 to -lmA isattenuatedby an amount correspondingto the one-quadrant (unipolar)or two-quadrant (bipolar)digitalinput signal.By appropriate choice of the input resistorvalue, any input voltagerange may be used. The followingsectionsof thisdata sheetshould be consultedto determine whether the multiplyingcharacteristics of thisdevicemake itsuitablefor a given application. The DAC1O09 isfullyDTLlTTL compatible with each input bitrepresentingone standardTTL load. The requiredlogic levelsof: +2.0V';;;Logic"1"';;;+15V OV .;;;Logic "0" .;;;+0.8V arealsocompatible with CMOS logicsystems. When driving the DAC1009 with a CMOS gate, standard CMOS/TTL inter- face rulesmust be observed to assurethat the CMOS gate will adequately sink at least1mA. Binary or BCD code can be used for unipolaroutput; Offset Binary code isused forbipolaroutput. By con- nectingexternaljumpers between module pins, threefeedback resistancevaluescan be obtained. A -lmA currentmust be appliedto the internalop amp's summing junction to produce the halfscaleoffsetnecessary for bipolaroutput. The OFFSET OUTPUT (pin 21),derived from the module's internalreferencesource, providesthis current. The followingtableshows the externalconnections used to program the variousoutput ranges.
