This manual describes the maintenance procedure for the NEC D2362 Disk Drive. The D2362 disk drive is a compact, highly reliable disk drive that stores 800 megabytes (ME) of unformatted data depending on the model used (see Table 1-1). The disk drive uses fixed disk, Winchester-type technology, which provides the most modern method of recording large amounts of data for high speed, computer operations and accessibility. 1.2 THEORY OF OPERATIO~ OVERVIE\\-.' The functional components of the D2362 Disk Drive are the interface and the sequence control, read/write control, servo control, and motor control circuits (see Figure 1-3). The sequence control circuits control the primary functions of the disk drive. The interface routes data, addresses, device status information, and control signals between the disk drive and the controller. The read/write control circuits control the reading of data from the disk and the writing of data on the disk. During a write operation, the circuits receive Non-Return to Zero (NRZ) format data from the controller and convert it to 2-7 Run Length Limited (2-7 RLL) format, shift the data to a logic level suitable for the read/write heads, and w~ite the data on the disk. During a read operation, the control circuiLs read and amplify the data from the disk, convert it from 2-7 RLL to NRZ format, and send this data to the controller. The serve control circuits read the signal recorded on the se~vo disk and use this signal to position-the read/write heads on the correct cylinder and to maintain the heads in position. The motor control circuits drive the spindle motor and control its speed of rotation. 1-5
1.3 MAINTENANCE PHILOSOPHY
The Disk Drive model is designed for long life and maintenance-free operation. Field repair is best achieved at the modular level. For this reason, only replaceable parts are listed as field maintenance items; the sealed module (HDA) in particular, though field replaceable, must not be opened or repaired outside the factory. Replacement and/or repair of defective items that are not included in the list of replacement parts should be performed at the factory or at an equivalent service facility. The Parts List (FRU level) of the D2362-100 ~~D (Basic Unit) are described in Table 1-3.
1.4 MAINTENANCE OVERVIEW
This ma~ual contains general and detailed informations of the installation, maintenance; parts replacement, parts catalog, and the operation of the diagnostic panel. 2.2 INTERFACE LI~E TERMI~ATION
There are two cabling configurations used in system installation: Daisy chain and Radial connection. In either case, the Line termination of "A" Cable is required. In the D2362 Disk Drive, it is possible to use the optional accessory External Terminator.
2.2.1 External Terminator
Illustrated is the LINE TERMINATION of the DAISY CHAIN SYSTL~ with 747-ETR EXTERNAL TERMINATOR (OPTION) in Figure 2-1 Example (A). When using the EXTERNAL TER~INATOR, the Resistor Modules of the locations "lGn , "lH" , "lJ" and "lK" on the "LOGIC & SERVO" P~A must be left.
2.2.2 On-Board-Terminating Resistors (Option)
As sho'w"n in Figure 2-2, on the "LOGIC & SERVO" P\\-"A in the D2362 DISK DRIVE, the four DIP sockets are provided to install the DIP-type Terminating resistor on the locations "lG", "lH", "lJ" and "lK". \\.Jhen ON-BOARD-TE&\\lINATING is used, the specified resistor module must be mounted in these DIP sockets. 3.2 PREVEKTIVE MAINTENANCE
Preventive maintenance (sometimes called routine or schedules maintenance) is limited to occasionally cleaning any dust on the surface of the disk drive. No Qther cleaning is recommended. No lubrication is required, and there are no components requiring scheduled adjustment or replacement. Not especially that the air filter in the sealed disk cannot be replaced or cleaned. If desired, routine performance checks are able to run, using either system-designed diagnostic programs or the offline test procedures described in Section 3.6.
3.3 TROUBLESHOOTING
If a fault occurs, first determine whether the fault is in the host controller, disk drive, or other interconnecting units. A fault in the disk drive can be isolated by temporarily disconnecting the drive from the system and substituting the Diagnostic Panel CDP) to conduct an offline performance check described in Section 3.6. When the fault isolation is achieved on the disk drive, the operational information J in the flowchart in Figure 3-1 and the status information in Section 3.4 will help one to localize the fault in the disk drive. - . Regarding the seek, the operator can set the CYLINDER LO~, CYLINDER HI, seek mode, and seek interval time. C-3.3 Log Read Mode The fault and seek error taken in during the status or test mode are displayed on the 7-segment light-emitting diode. The data to be displayed come in five types as follows: 1) Total error count Maximum 255 2) Total power-on count Maximum 255 3) Individual error count Maximum 15 4) Error count by similar type Maximum 15 5) Sequential error record For 1) through 4), the increment is stopped when the maximum number is reached. C-4 KEYBOARD OPERATION AND DISPLAY The HLOG has 16 numerical keys, ten functional keys, six 7-segment displays, and six binary displays. I I ,-, I-I ,-, I-I I-I i_/o I-I I I I I I I ,-, Figure C-4 C-5
- . C-4.2 Key Operation and Display in Test Mode (1) Starting the mode For this mode, a safety code is provided to prevent a move from online to offline caused by a typing error. The actual procedure is shown below. (Figure C-6) However, as in the status mode, the procedure above may not be operational unless the operation in the other mode is complete. C-4.3 Execution of the Mode This mode is subdivided into four modes as follows: (1) Seek parameter input mode Star~ed by pressing JPA!, this mode sets up CYLINDER 1, CYLINDER 2, SEEK INTERVAL TIME, SEEK MODE NO. The seek mode is related to CYLINDER 1 and CYLINDER 2 as shown below. (Table C-2) I 6 , 0~ s·1 I 1 I I 1 I ~§]B9 Figure C-6 C-7
- . SEEK INTERVAL TIME is in units of urn sec". The procedure for input of parameters is shown next. a) Input of CYLINDER 1 After pressing IpAI, the display shows the following: I-I I I -, -I I I I I-I I '_I I_I I_I ___ DATA _ Figure C-7 Pressing a Nl~RICAL key in this status causes the displayed data to be left-shifted. Pressing iNE) causes the value displayed in the data part to be read as data, and the operation goes to b). If the input value does not satisfy the restrictions, the value is read and the operation moves to the next step, too. After pressing INEI, pressing another FL~CTIOK key enables the operation to be moved to another mode ~ithin the TEST MODE, or to STATUS MODE or LOG READ MODE. b) Input of CYLI~vER 2 The following display is shown. L DATA - Figure C-8 After pressing INEI, the operation moves to c). In other respects, the description in a) is applicable. C-9
The end of seek mode occurs in two ways: 1) When ISTj is pressed. 2) When a seek error or fault occurs while not in the retry mode. When the seek mode ends, the "RUN" display goes out and the unit waits for the input of a function key in the TEST MODE, the I SM i, or I 1M I key. (3) CE reset mode Pressing the IMRI key causes a ICEI reset instruction to be given to the device. At this time, the 7-segment display operates in the same way as in the STATUS MODE. Regardless of the result of the Return To Zero, this mode ends and the unit waits for the input of a function key within the TEST MODE, the i S~1:, or I u'q key. (4) Head advance mode Pressing the !HAI key causes the Head Advance instruction to be given to the device (Head Address 0-15). At this time, the 7- segment display operates in the same way as in the STATUS MODE. Regardless of the outcome of head advance, this mode ends, and the unit waits for input of a function key under the TEST MODE, the !S~l:, or I L"'f key. Note: The logging in the TEST MODE is limited to the duration of the seek, Head Advance, or ICE! reset operation. (5) Head Bit 4 mode Head Bit 4 key must be pushed to select Head Address over 15. By this action, Head Address Bit 4 is set to high, and indicates HD-4 binary display. Then pushing !MRI key resets Head Address Bit 4. C-4.4 Key Operation and Display in Log Read Mod~ (1) Starting the mode Pressing IU11 starts the log read mode. However, if the operation is not complete in another mode, the change to this mode may not be made. (2) Execution of the mode After the LED of the "LOG READ MODE" is lit of the six binary displays, ADDRESS and DATA are displayed as shown below. (Figure C-l1) C-ll
- . If there is no address with a NON-~O DATA part between the next address and the address OFFH' the operation returns to the address 000. Pressing INEI in this way permits successive search of the addresses for which the DATA part is other than 00. The addresses 10~ through 27FH in the logging memory are assigned to the sequential error record. The sequential error record not only records the errors sequentially, but also records no occurrence of errors when this happens between the power-on and power-off. An example is shown below. ADDRESS LOW FAULT "DA" DA ADDRES S ii! Figure C-13 NOTE 1. Indicates that power on-off is repeated three times without error. As shown in the figure, two consecutive ODs leads to the record end. If 00 is followed by a NON-~O code, it indicates the power on-off without error occurred as many times as shown by the code. The procedure for selecting an address after lOOg is shown next. a) After pressing the fPAI key, pressing a numerical key causes the display on the ADDRESS part to be left-shifted and the display on the DATA part to disappear •.
