APPLICATIONS
Instrumentationwith Numerical Readout inEngineeringUnits General-PurposeInstrumentationwith Auto Ranged Gain & Decimal PointSettling Voltage & Current Measurement GENERAL DESCRIPTION The AD2001 isa 3Y2digitpanelmeter designedfor original equipment requiringhigh performance ata low price. The maximum' errorof the AD2001 is0.05% of reading:tldigit with a temperature coefficientof :t50ppm/ C. An unusual AID converterapproach-ANALOKTM_yields a minimum component and high accuracy design.ANALOKTM allows the unitto operatefrom a single5VDC power source and is the key to the AD2001's smallsizeand low cost. DISPLAY FEATURES The AD2001 displayuses incandescentRCA Numitron dis- play tubes which provide a bright,sharp,easilyreadabledis- play over a wide range of ambient light. These tubes arerated at 100,000 hours. To assurereliability, every AD2001 is burned infor 7 days priorto shipment. Other standardfeatures of the displayare:automatic polarity, programmable decimal points, automatic zero,fullscale:t199.9mV and automatic overloadindication. The displayrateis5 readingsper second, with ratesof 1 readingper second or lower available. DESIGN EFFICIENCY FOR THE OEM The AD2001 isnot only a nearlydirectreplacement forthe most common sizeof panelmeters (whose errorsspecifications areusuallyof the 1-2% class),but itisconsiderablysmaller than the 5Vz"to 7Y2" width typicalof the most accurateand expensiveanalog meters. The frontbezeldesignof the AD2001 allowseasy installation and removal, and itslightweight allowsthe unit to be used in hinged panel equipment. The complete unit ishoused inan aluminum casewhich providesstructuralstrength, optimum heat dissipation, and shieldingfrom externalnoise.Overvoltage protectionisalsoprovided. Information furnished by Analog Devices isbelievedto be accurate and reliable. However, no responsibilityisassumed by Analog Devices for itsuse;nor for any infringementsof patentsor otherrightsof third partieswhich may resultfrom itsuse. No licenseisgrantedby implica- tion or otherwiseunder any patent or patent rightsof Analog Devices. The AD2001 logiclevelsare compatible with DTL & TTL inte- gratedcircuits. The AD2001 can operate from the user's.5VDC system supply-eliminatingthe shielding, decoupling, etc. nor- mally needed when the AC linem!lstbe routed near signal leads.SeparateDC inputsto the converterand display, allow the OEM designerto minimize effectsof displaytransientson conversionaccuracy, economize regulatedpower and, by use of an externalcircuit,to blank the display. DATA PROCESSING EQUIPMENT INTERFACING The AD2001 providesan excellenteconomy digitalpanel meter for displaypurposes. The ANALOKTM circuitalso providesBCD outputs, polaritysign, overrange, and overload signalswhich can be used under restrictedconditionsfor data processingequipment interfacing. The logic"one" on the overloadoutput linecan be generated by eitheran actual"overload" (>199.9mV) atthe input or an input polaritychange. Itisrecommended thatin data proces- singinterfaceapplicationsthe data loggeror computer equip- ment be programmed to ignorethe BCD output data whenever the logic"1" appears on the overloadline. In specificapplica- tionswhere the use of the above procedure isnot desired, the circuitshown in Figure 1 may be used to generatea "Polarity Error" flag. MULTIPLEXING SYSTEMS The ANALOKTM circuitpermitsthe AD2001 to read or hold a measurement under externalcommand. This featurepermits the meter to be used inmultiplexingapplicationswhere a measurement time of 250ms between input changes can be accepted.Up to 4 such signalscan be multiplexed per second.
