Standard Terminals and Splices Catalog 82042 Revised 8-00 PIDG (Pre-Insulated Diamond Grip) Product Facts n Pre-insulated terminal designed for uniform relia- bility in most difficult cir- cuit environments n PIDG Terminals consist of tin plated copper or tin plated phosphor bronze body for spring spades with a copper sleeve and insula- tion sleeve fitted over ter- minal barrel n Design of the tool dies and construction of the terminal allows for uniform insula- tion thickness under crimp- ing pressure, transmitting this pressure evenly to the center of the crimp area The AMP Mated Tool/Terminal Concept n AMP compression crimping produces crimps for a given size wire and terminal that are alike in appearance and p e r f o r m a n c e n Terminal and crimping tool are designed as uniform matched devices n Dies are precision- engineered from the finest hard-metal alloys n Crimping pressure is con- trolled by a ratchet device on the hand tool or a correspond- ing pre-calibration in the crimping jaws of AMP auto- mated crimping machines The Crimp n When done properly, crimping pressure can nei- ther overstress nor under- stress the terminal barrel — machined dies fully bottom to the precise crimp height n Resulting termination is free of contamination n Resistant to shock and criti- cal environments n Tensile strength approach- es that of the wire itself n PIDG T erminals meet or exceed the requirements of MIL-T- 7928, Type II, Class 1 and 2 n Refer to AMP Qualified Products for Military Appli- cation, Catalog 73-159 for Military Specification Number to AMP Part N u m b e rcross reference Table of Contents Terminals Splices Basic Terminal Material.The basic terminal is constructed of fine grade high conductivity copper per ASTM B-152 and tin-plated per ASTM B-545. Basic material for Spring Spade Tongue Terminals is phosphor bronze per ASTM B-139 and tin-plated per ASTM B-545. AMP’s special plating process creates durable corrosion resistance to salt spray and most chemical fumes. Color Coding.Terminal insulation is color-coded by wire range to prevent errors during installation. Serrations. Serrations inside barrel provide maxi- mum contact and tensile strength after crimping. Funnel Ramp Entry.Prevents a turned back strand and permits rapid wire inser- tion during high speed production. Copper Sleeve.The specially designed copper sleeve, fitted over the terminal barrel, provides circumferen- tial insulation support to the wire and allows the wire to be bent in any direc- tion, without fraying the wire’s insula- tion or breaking the conductor. The brass terminal is either unplated or tin-plated per ASTM B-545. The phosphor bronze terminal is tin-plated per ASTM B-545. AMP’s special plating process creates durable corrosion resistance to salt spray and most chemical fumes. Color Coding.Terminal insulation is color-coded by wire range to prevent errors during installation. Serrations.Serrations inside barrel provide maximum contact and tensile strength after crimping. Funnel Ramp Entry. Prevents a turned back strand and rapid wire insertion during high speed production. Copper Sleeve.The specially designed copper sleeve, fitted over the terminal barrel, provides circumferential insulation support to the wire and allows the wire to be bent in any direction, without fraying the wire’s insulation or breaking the conductor.
