3 INA223EVM Hardware Overview

The INA223EVM hardwaresetupinvolvesconnectingthetwo EVM PCBs together,applyingpower, connectingtheUSB cable,and settingthejumpers.Thissectiondescribesthedetailsofthisprocedure.

3.1 ElectrostaticDischargeWarning

Many ofthecomponents on theINA223EVM aresusceptibletodamage by electrostaticdischarge(ESD). CustomersareadvisedtoobserveproperESD handlingprecautionswhen unpackingand handlingthe EVM, includingtheuse ofa groundedwriststrapatan approvedESD workstation.

3.2 Connecting theHardware

To connecttheINA223 testboardand theSM-USB-DIG Platformtogether, gentlyslidethemale and femaleends ofthe10-pinconnectorstogether.Make surethatthetwo connectorsarecompletelypushed together;looseconnectionsmay cause intermittentoperation.

3.3 Connecting Power

AftertheEVM and SM-USB-DIG arejoined,as shown inFigure5,connectthedesiredVBUS and shunt configurationtobe measured.Typically,setupinvolvesa high-orlow-sideloadand a shuntresistor acrossVIN+ and VIN–.The example inFigure5 representsa testscenariowitha low-sideshuntattached. The power supplyforVBUS isnotincludedwiththekitand issuppliedby thecustomer;thespecificvoltage needed depends on yourtestingneeds. You may want tochange some ofthe jumperson theINA223EVM tomatch yourspecificconfiguration.Forexample,you may wishtoseta specificI2C addressby configuringjumper1 (JMP1) and jumper2 (JMP2). Figure8.INA223EVM DefaultJumpers Jumper 3 (JMP3) on theINA223EVM istypicallysettotheinternal(INT)position.When settotheINT position,thedevicesupplyvoltageisgeneratedand controlledfromtheSM-USB-DIG Platform.When this jumperissettotheexternal(EXT)position,INA223 pin4 (VS)connectstoterminalstripT1 and can be powered froman externalsupply. JMP1 and JMP2 controltheI2C addresspinfortheINA223;thesejumperssettheaddressforA0 toeither high,low,SCL, orSDA. Make suretoconnectonlyone jumperata timefortheaddresscontrol(for example,ifJMP1 isconnected,do notconnectJMP2, and viceversa).Failuretoproperlyconnect jumperscan cause shortsorinterruptionsinthecommunicationlines.Formore informationon theINA223 addressing,consulttheINA223 datasheet(SBOS528 ). Table3 summarizesthefunctionoftheINA223 testboardjumpers.Formost applications,allthejumpers shouldbe leftintheirdefaultconfigurations. 3.6 INA223EVM Hardware

Thissectiondescribessome ofthehardwarefeaturespresenton theINA223EVM board.

3.6.1 JMP3: I2C versus ControlSetting

The JMP3 settingdeterminesiftheINA223 ispowered fromtheSM-USB-DIG platformoran external power supply.IfJMP3 issettotheINT position,theVS pinisconnectedtotheswitchableVDUT signal generatedfromtheSM-USB-DIG Platform.Thisvoltagecan be settoeither3.3V or5 V,dependingon how itisconfiguredinthesoftware. When JMP3 issettotheEXT position,an externalsupplyconnectedtoterminalT1 must be used to providethedigitalsupplyvoltagefortheINA223.

3.6.2 JMP1 and JMP2: I2C Address Hardware Setting(A0)

JMP1 and JMP2 areused tosetthehardwaresettingfortheA0 I2C addresspinon theINA223.Using JMP2, theA0 addresscan be settoeithera logic'1'ora logic'0'.UsingJMP1, theA0 addresscan be set toeithertheSCL orSDA communicationline.Make suretoonlyhave a jumperinstalledon JMP1 or JMP2. Failuretokeep theselinesseparatecan leadtoboardshortsand problemswiththeI2C communicationlines.See theI2C AddressSelectionsectionforhow toconfiguretheINA223EVM softwaretomatch theJMP1 and JMP2 hardwaresettings.

3.6.3 ExternalI2C linesand TerminalBlock T3

The I2C communicationlineson theINA223EVM aretiedtotwo sources:The internalI2C communication linesfromtheSM-USB-DIG Platformand terminalblockT3.IfexternalsignalsseparatefromtheSM-USB- DIG aretobe used,simplydisconnecttheSM-USB-DIG fromtheINA223 boardand connecttoexternal SDA, SCL, and GND lines. Also, remember toapplyan externalVS thatiscompatiblewiththeI2C communicationdevicebeingused. CAUTION Failureto disconnectthe SM-USB-DIG Platformwhile using externalI2C communication can cause damage to the SM-USB-DIG or external communicationdevice.
