1 Introduction

The TCA7408-5405EVM isdesignedtoshow theused ofmultipleTIproductson a singleevaluation board.Itshows how thesingle-wire5-bitoutputexpanderTCA5405 isused togenerateLED blinking functions.The Singlewireinterfaceisimplementedusinga singleGPIO porton theMSP430, and very simplefirmwareembedded inthedevice.The TCA7408 GPIO expanderisused toan inputhandler,that detectsKey pressesand notifiestheMSP430. The EVM alsohas theTPL0401 thatisused forRGB color mixinginconjunctionwiththeTLC59108. 1SCPU034 –December 2011 TCA7408EVM,TCA5405EVM SubmitDocumentationFeedback Copyright© 2011,Texas InstrumentsIncorporated

1.2 TPL0401A/B

The TPL0401 isan I2C bus controlled,singlechannel,linear-taperdigitalpotentiometerwith128 wiper positions.TPL0401A/B have an end-to-endresistanceof10k ohms and thelowterminalinternally connectedtoground.

1.3 TCA5405

The TCA5405 isa 5-bitoutputexpandercontrolledusinga singlewireinput.Thisdeviceisidealfor portableapplicationsas ithas a wideVCC rangeof1.65Vto3.6V.The TCA5405 uses a self-timedserial dataprotocolwitha singledatainputdrivenby a masterdevicesynchronizedtoan internalclockofthat device.

1.4 TCA7408

This8-bitI/Oexpanderforthetwo-linebidirectionalbus (I2C) isdesignedtoprovidegeneral-purpose remoteI/OexpansionviatheI2C interface[serialclock(SCL)and serialdata(SDA)].The majorbenefitof thisdeviceisitswideVCC range.Itcan operatefrom1.65-Vto3.6-Von theGPIO-portsideand 1.65-Vto 5.5-Von theSDA/SCL side.ThisallowstheTCA7408 tointerfacewithnext-generationmicroprocessors and microcontrollerson theSDA/SCL side,where supplylevelsaredroppingdown toconservepower. The TCA7408 open-draininterrupt(INT)outputisactivatedwhen any GPIO setas an inputhas a transitiontothestateoppositeofthatintheInputDefaultStateregisterand thecorrespondingbitinthe InterruptMask Registerissetto0.Itisused toindicatetothesystemmasterthatan inputhas changed to a pre-determinedstate.

1.5 TLC59108

The TLC59108 isan I2C bus controlled8-bitLED driverthatisoptimizedforred/green/blue/amber(RGBA) colormixingand backlightapplicationforamusement products.Each LED outputhas itsown 8-bit resolution(256steps)fixed-frequencyindividualPWM controllerthatoperatesat97 kHz,witha dutycycle thatisadjustablefrom0% to99.6%.The individualPWM controllerallowseach LED tobe settoa specific brightnessvalue.An additional8-bitresolutiongroupPWM controllerhas botha fixedfrequencyof190 Hz and an adjustablefrequencybetween 24 Hz toonce every10.73seconds,witha dutycyclethatis adjustablefrom0% to99.6%.The groupPWM controllerdims orblinksallLEDs withthesame value. TLC59108 scalesup thereferencecurrentsetby theexternalresistor(Rext)tosinktheoutputcurrent (Iout)ateach outputport.

1.6 Requirements

InordertooperatethisEVM, thefollowingcomponents must be connectedand properlyconfigured.

1.6.1 LaunchPad

A Texas InstrumentsLaunchPad (MSP-EXP430G2) withthemale headersand an MSP430G2553 microcontrollerinstalledisrequiredtoruntheboard.A LaunchPad can be acquiredhere (https://estore.ti.com/MSP-EXP430G2-MSP430-LaunchPad-Value-Line-Development-kit-P2031.aspx) NOTE: IMPORTANT: The code tocontroltheTCA7408EVM/TCA5405EVM was writtenfroman MSP430G2553 and willnotwork withtheMSP430 chipsthatareincludedwiththe LaunchPad kit.

1.6.2 Power Supply (*Optional)

To ensurecorrectfunctionalityoftheLEDs a 5V supplyat300mA isrecommended (refertonotein section2.3.1).Ifnotusinga USB cabletopower theLaunchPad a 3.3Vpower supplyat200mA is required.

2.2 Hardware Setup

Therearethreedifferentmodes thattheEVM can be used in,LED mode, Voltagereferencemode, and Variablegainmode. To setupany ofthesethreemodes, beginby connectingtheEVM totheLaunchPad. Note thelocationoftheVCC and GND pinson headersJ1 and J2 on boththeLaunchPad and theEVM to ensurecorrectinstallation. Installa shortingjumperacrosspins1 and 2 ofJ6.Connectan external+5V supplytoJ3 and either connecttheLaunchPad toa computerthroughUSB orconnecta 3.3Vpower supplytoJ6*on the LaunchPad topower itup. 4.1.1 TC5405 Overview

As shown inFigure1,a tenbitserialtransferisrequiredtosetthefiveoutputson theTCA5405. The first fourbits,0101 (S0-S3),actas a startflagfortheTCA5405. S0 isa startbitand S1-S3 aretheclocksense bitsfortheTCA5405. The nextfivebits(D4-D0)arethedatabitsassociatedwitheach oftheoutputs.The tenthbitreturnstheseriallineback tohightoreadytheTCA5405 forthenextinput. Inthesourcecode therearetwo methods tohandlethiscommunication.These functionsarelocatedin Single_Wire.c 1. Use a GPIO (generalpurposeinput/output)and a clockdelaytoemulateS0-D0. 2. Use one oftheMSP430 timerstochange theoutputata specifiedbitinterval. 4.1.2 bit_bang_TCA5405_byte(unsignedchar byte) The functionbi_bang_TCA5405_byte(unsignedcharbyte)willemulatetherequiredtenbitsfor communicationwiththeTCA5405. Thisfunctionworksverysimplyby drivinga GPIO pintohighorlow and utilizingthe_delay_cycles()functiontoholdthevalue.Aftereach asserton theGPIO pina _delay_cycles(16)iscalledtowaitroughly2 microsecondsbeforethenextbit.The sectionthathandles thedatabits(D4-D0)onlyuses a _delay_cycles(10)function;thisistoadjustforthetimespenton if statements. 4.1.3 send_TCA5405_byte The functionsend_TCA5405_byte(unsignedcharbyte)alongwith5405_Timer_ISR()implementsthe requiredserialdataby usingone oftheMSP430 timers.When a byteissenttosend_TCA5405_byte(), thefunctionadds thestartflag(S0-S3)tothebeginningand thestopbit(1)totheend (LSB),storesthe new valuetoa globalvariable,and enablesthetimerinterrupts.Aftera setnumber ofclockcyclesdefined by NEXT_BIT_TIME, 5405_Timer_ISR()iscalledand adjuststheoutputoftheP2.0accordingly.
