Business-CriticalContinuity SMP Conn ectors Introduction D escription OneofthekeybenefitsoftheSMPconnectorinterfaceisitsuseinhighfrequencyblind-mateapplications. The designoftheSMPbulletandshroudsystemallowsforbothaxialandradialmisalignment. Thebasicsystemis comprised of an inner “bullet” adapter, and two outer receptacles called “shrouds”. The bullet provides a flexiblelinkbetweentheshroudconnections. Inblind-mateapplications,oneshroudconnectorwillbetypicallyspecifiedasasnap-oninterfaceandtheother as a slide-on. This ensures that the bullet adapter remains fixed in the same shroud connector when the connectionisdisengaged. TheLDistypicallyselectedasthesnap-oninterfaceinPCBmountorblind-mateapplications, whiletheFDismainlyusedforcabledconnectionswherehigherretentionforcesarerequired. The two slide-on interfacesSmooth Bore (SM) and Catcher’sMit (CM) allow forreduced connection forcesas comparedtothesnap-onversions. Thepush-oninterfacecreatesaslidingconnectionthatdoesnotphysically locate the mating referenceplanes, allowing for axial and radialmisalignment.
