SNLS061C –MAY 2000–REVISED MARCH 2013 www.ti.com APPLICATIONS INFORMATION The MM145453 isspecificallydesignedtooperate4½ digit7-segmentdisplayswithminimalinterfacewiththe displayand datasource.Serialdatatransferfrom thedatasourcetothedisplaydriverisaccomplishedwith2 signals,serialData and Clock.Using a formatofa leading"1"followedby the33 databitsand 2 trailingdon't carebits,allowsdatatransferwithouttheneed ofan additionalData Load signal.SincetheMM145453 does not containa charactergenerator,theformattingofthesegment informationmust be done priortoinputtingthedata totheMM145453. The transferofthe33 databitsiscompleteatthefallingedge ofthe36thclockcycle,thus providingnon-multiplexed,directdrivetothedisplay.Outputschange onlyiftheserialdatabitsdifferfrom the previoustime. Figure4 shows thedatainputformat.A singlestartbitoflogical'1'precedesthe33 bitsofsegment datafora totalof34 bitsthatneed tobe definedand clockedin.Afterthe34 bitsareclockedin,2 additionalclockcycles arerequired.At the36thclockcyclean internalLOAD signalisgeneratedsynchronouslywiththerisingedge of theClockInsignal,which loadsthe33 bitsofsegment dataintheshiftregisterintothelatches.At thefalling edge ofthe36thclockcyclean internalRESET signalisgeneratedwhichclearsalltheshiftregistersforthenext setofdata.The shiftregistersare staticmaster-slaveconfiguration.There isno clearforthemasterportionof thefirstshiftregister,thusallowingcontinuousoperation.The dataduringthe35thand 36thclockcyclesis"don't care",butsettingdatatological'0'forthesetwo clockcyclesisthepreferredformat. The datainputbitsmap directlytothesegment outputpinsand thedisplay.The MM145453 does nothave any formatrestrictions,as alloutputsarecontrollable. The MM145453 has an internaloscillatorwhich can generatethe requiredclocksignalto drivethe LCD back plane.The frequencyoftheinternaloscillatorissetby a pull-upresistor(ROSC_IN ) connectedfrom theOSC_IN pin to VDD , and a capacitor(COSC_IN ) connected from the OSC_IN pin to Ground. Due to the currentsink limitationsoftheOSC_IN circuitry,thelowestrecommended resistorvalueforsettingtheoscillatorfrequencyis 9kΩ.Itwilltypicallytake2 to4 RC timeconstantstochargetheOSC_IN pinfrom near 0V towithin1V ofVDD whichisthehighthresholdvoltagepointfortheOSC_IN circuitry.An approximatecalculationoffOSC is: fOSC = 1 /(lη(VDD /1V)X R OSC_IN X C OSC_IN ) A R OSC_IN resistorvalueof 50kΩ witha C OSC_IN capacitorvalueof 0.01µF and a VDD valueof 5.00V would produce a typicaloscillatorfrequency( fOSC ) of about 1200Hz. The fOSC signalisdividedby 16 beforeitis presentedattheBP_OUT pin.For thisexample theapproximateBP_OUT frequencywillbe fOSC /16,or about 75Hz. The BP_IN pinoftheMM145453 can be used withan externallysuppliedsignal,providedithas a dutycycleof 50%. Any deviationfrom a precise50% dutycyclewillresultinan offsetvoltageon the LCD. The use of an externalclockallowssynchronizingthe displaydrivewithAC power,otherinternalclocks,or DVM integration timetoreduceinterferencefrom thedisplay.When usingan externalclockfortheback planedrivetheinternal oscillatorshouldbe disabledby connectingtheOSC_IN pindirectlytoground.Thiswillpreventpossibleinternal oscillations,and reducedevicedissipation. The MM145453 isa pinoutvariationoftheMM5453. For additionalapplicationsinformationpleaserefertothe MM5453 datasheet.

(2) Material type: When designated, preproduction parts are prototypes/experimental devices, and are not yet approved or released for full production. Testing and final process, including without limitation quality assurance, reliability performance testing, and/or process qualification, may not yet be complete, and this item is subject to further changes or possible discontinuation. If available for ordering, purchases will be subject to an additional waiver at checkout, and are intended for early internal evaluation purposes only. These items are sold without warranties of any kind. (3) RoHS values: Yes, No, RoHS Exempt. See the TI RoHS Statement for additional information and value definition. (4) Lead finish/Ball material: Parts may have multiple material finish options. Finish options are separated by a vertical ruled line. Lead finish/Ball material values may wrap to two lines if the finish value exceeds the maximum column width. (5) MSL rating/Peak reflow: The moisture sensitivity level ratings and peak solder (reflow) temperatures. In the event that a part has multiple moisture sensitivity ratings, only the lowest level per JEDEC standards is shown. Refer to the shipping label for the actual reflow temperature that will be used to mount the part to the printed circuit board. (6) Part marking: There may be an additional marking, which relates to the logo, the lot trace code information, or the environmental category of the part. Multiple part markings will be inside parentheses. Only one part marking contained in parentheses and separated by a "~" will appear on a part. If a line is indented then it is a continuation of the previous line and the two combined represent the entire part marking for that device.
