SNVS131D –DECEMBER 1999–REVISED APRIL 2013 www.ti.com Reset Operationand ProtectionFeatures Block Diagram APPLICATION HINTS The LM9071 voltageregulatorhas been optimizedforuse inmicroprocessorbased automotivesystems.Several uniquedesignfeatureshave been incorporatedtoaddressmany FMEA (FailureMode EffectsAnalysis)concerns forfail-safesystemperformance. FAULT TOLERANT FEATURES Whilenotspecificallyensureddue toproductiontestinglimitations,theLM9071 has been testedand shown to continuetoprovidea regulatedoutputand, notgeneratean erroneoussystem resetsignalwhilesubjectedto highlevelsofRF electricfieldenergy(upto300 V/m signalstrengthovera 2 MHz to400 MHz frequencyrange). Thisisveryimportantinvehiclesafetyrelatedapplicationswhere thesystem must continuetooperatenormally. To maintainthisimmunitytoRFI theoutputbypasscapacitorisimportant(47μF isrecommended).

www.ti.com SNVS131D –DECEMBER 1999–REVISED APRIL 2013 An outputbypass capacitorofatleast10 μF isrequiredforstability(47 μF isrecommended). The ESR ofthis capacitorshouldbe lessthan3Ω.An inputcapacitorof1 μF orlargerisrecommended toimprovelinetransient and noiseperformance. Conventionalloaddump protectionisbuiltintowithstandup to+60V and −50V transients.Protectionagainst reversepolaritybatteryconnectionsisalsobuiltin.Witha reversedbatteryconnectiontheoutputoftheLM9071 willnotgo more negativethanone diodedrop below ground.Thiswillpreventdamage toany ofthe5V load circuits. RESET FLAG Excessiveloadingoftheoutputtothepointwhere theoutputvoltagedropsby 300 mV to500 mV willsignala resetflagtothemicro.Thiswillwarn ofa VCC supplythatmay produceunpredictableoperationofthesystem. On power-upand recoveryfroma faultconditionthedelaycapacitorisused toholdthemicroina resetcondition fora programmable timeintervaltoallowthesystem operatingvoltagesand clocktostabilizebeforeexecuting code. The delaytimeintervalcan be estimatedby thefollowingequation: (1) INPUT STABILITY Low dropoutvoltageregulatorswhich utilizea PNP power transistorusuallyexhibita largeincreaseincurrent when indropout(VIN < 5.5V).Thisincreaseiscaused by thesaturationcharacteristics(β reduction)ofthePNP transistor. To significantlyminimizethisincreaseincurrenttheLM9071 detectswhen thePNP enterssaturation and reducestheoperatingcurrent. Thisreductionininputcurrentcan createa stabilityprobleminapplicationswithhigherloadcurrent(> 100 mA) where the inputvoltageisappliedthrougha longlengthof wire, which ineffectadds a significantamount of inductanceinserieswiththeinput. The dropininputcurrentmay createa positiveinputvoltagetransientwhich may takethePNP outofsaturation.Iftheinputvoltageisheldconstantatthethresholdwhere thePNP isgoing inand outofsaturation,an oscillationmay be created. Thisisonlyobservedwhere a largeseriesinductanceispresentintheinputsupplylineand when theriseand falltimeoftheinputsupplyisveryslow.Iftheapplicationand removaloftheinputvoltagechanges ata rate greaterthan500 mV/μs itwillmove throughthedropoutregionoftheregulator(VIN of3V to5.5V)tooquicklyfor an oscillationtobe established. THERMAL MANAGEMENT The LM9071 ispackaged in both a TO-263 surfacemount power package and a narrow lead-pitchTO-220 package. To obtainoperationover the highestpossibleloadcurrentand inputvoltageranges, care must be takentocontroltheoperatingtemperatureofthedevice.Thermalshutdown protectionisbuiltin, witha threshold above 150°C. Conventionalheat-sinkingtechniquescan be used withtheTO-220 package. When applyingthe TO-263 package,on board heat-sinkingisimportanttopreventprematurethermalshutdown.More copperfoil areaunderthetabofthedevicewilldirectlyimprovetheoperatingθJ-A oftheTO-263 package, whichwillreduce thejunctiontemperatureofthedevice. The θJ-A valuefortheTO-263 package (stillair,no additionalheatsink)isratedat80°C/W. The effectiveθJ-A valueof the TO-263 package can be reduced by increasingthe printedcircuitboard area thatisconnected (soldered)tothepackage tab.Using 1 ounce (1.4milsthick)coppercladwithno soldermask, an area of0.5 squareincheswillreduceθJ-A to50°C/W, an areaof1.0squareincheswillreduceθJ-Ato37°C/W, and an areaof 1.6squareincheswillreduceθJ-A to32°C/W. Iftheprintedcircuitboarduses a soldermask, thecoppercladarea underthesoldermask shouldbe increasedby atleast50% tomaintaina similarθJ-A rating. The use of a double sidedPC board withsolderedfilledviasbetween two planesof copper,as shown in Figure16, willimprovethermalperformancewhileoptimizingthe PC board surfacearea required.Using the doublesidedPC boardarrangementshown inFigure16,with1 ounce (1.4milsthick)coppercladwithno solder mask and solderfilledvias,an areaof0.5squareincheson bothsideswillreduceθJ-A to43°C/W. (2) Material type: When designated, preproduction parts are prototypes/experimental devices, and are not yet approved or released for full production. Testing and final process, including without limitation quality assurance, reliability performance testing, and/or process qualification, may not yet be complete, and this item is subject to further changes or possible discontinuation. If available for ordering, purchases will be subject to an additional waiver at checkout, and are intended for early internal evaluation purposes only. These items are sold without warranties of any kind. (3) RoHS values: Yes, No, RoHS Exempt. See the TI RoHS Statement for additional information and value definition. (4) Lead finish/Ball material: Parts may have multiple material finish options. Finish options are separated by a vertical ruled line. Lead finish/Ball material values may wrap to two lines if the finish value exceeds the maximum column width. (5) MSL rating/Peak reflow: The moisture sensitivity level ratings and peak solder (reflow) temperatures. In the event that a part has multiple moisture sensitivity ratings, only the lowest level per JEDEC standards is shown. Refer to the shipping label for the actual reflow temperature that will be used to mount the part to the printed circuit board. (6) Part marking: There may be an additional marking, which relates to the logo, the lot trace code information, or the environmental category of the part. Multiple part markings will be inside parentheses. Only one part marking contained in parentheses and separated by a "~" will appear on a part. If a line is indented then it is a continuation of the previous line and the two combined represent the entire part marking for that device.
