  • Non-VolatileMemory toHold theSetting ofthepotentiometeradjustmenttask.Thisadjustment task is currentlyperformed at the factoryusing a• EEPROM inSystem Programmable trimmeradjustmenttooland visualinspection.• No ExternalProgramming VoltageRequired The VCOM adjustmentcan be done electronicallyin• Maximum InterfaceBus Speed is400 kHz production, using the I2C compatibleinterface. The• SON-10 Package factoryoperatorcan physicallyviewthescreenhead- on (frontalviewing)when performingthisstep, easing APPLICATIONS manufacturingespeciallyforlargeTFT panels.
  • TFT Panel FactoryCalibration The VCOM levelistypicallyat halfAV DD (determined by R1 and R2) and isbufferedby the actualVCOM• DigitalPotentiometer driver.By controllingthelevelofIOUT ,theVCOM level• Programmable CurrentSink can be tuned. The currentlevelat the outputof the LM8342 is a fraction(1/128 to 128/128) of a maximum currentwhichissetby R SET and an analog reference(AVDD ).The actualfractionisdetermined by the 7-bitDAC. As a result, the outputcurrentof theLM8342 has a good temperaturestabilityyielding a verystableVCOM adjustment.Controllingthe DAC settingoftheLM8342 isdone viaitsI2C compatible interface. The actualDAC settingis stored in a volatileregister.Using a “WritetoEE ” command the data can be storedpermanentlyin the embedded EEPROM. At power on of the device, the EEPROM dataiscopiedtothevolatileregister, settingtheDAC. At any time, the data in the EEPROM can be changed againviatheI2C compatibleinterface. ± POLARITY LM8342 SNOSAM0B –NOVEMBER 2005–REVISED MARCH 2013 www.ti.com APPLICATION SECTION INTRODUCTION The LM8342 isan integratedcombinationofa digitallycontrolledcurrentsinkand a non-volatileregister(7 bits EEPROM). Programming theregistercan be done usingtheI2C compatibleinterface. The LM8342 replacesthe potentiometeradjustment, and therebysimplifiestheVCOM calibrationprocedure. With theLM8342, thefactory operatorcan physicallyviewthescreenhead-onwhen performingthisstep, easingmanufacturingespeciallyfor largeTFT panelsizes. The followingsectionsdiscusstheprincipleofoperationofa TFT-LCD and, subsequentlygivea descriptionof how touse theLM8342, includingtheI2C compatibleinterfaceand controlinputs.Afterthis, two typicalLM8342 configurationsare presented.Subsequently an evaluationsystem is introduced, includinga μC-board programming using the I2C compatibleinterface. At the end of thisapplicationsectionboard layout recommendationsaregiven. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION OF A TFT-LCD Thissectionoffersa briefoverviewoftheprincipleofoperationofTFT-LCD ’s.Itgivesa detaileddescriptionof how informationispresentedon thedisplay.Furtheran explanationofhow dataiswrittentothescreenpixels and how thepixelsareselectedisincluded. Figure21. IndividualLCD Pixel Figure21 shows a simplifiedillustrationofan individualLCD pixel. The topand bottomplatesofa pixelconsistof Indium-TinOxide (ITO),which isa transparent, electricallyconductivematerial.ITO isattheinnersurfacesof two glasssubstratesthatare thefrontand back glasspanelsofa TFT display.Sandwiched between two ITO platesisan insulatingmaterial(liquidcrystal).Liquidcrystalsalterthe polarizationof light, dependingon how much voltage(VPIXEL) isappliedacrossthetwo plates.Polarizersare placedon theoutersurfacesofthetwo glasssubstrates.Incombinationwiththeliquidcrystal, thepolarizerscreatean electricallyvariablelightfilterthat modulateslighttransmittedfromtheback tothefrontofa display.A pixel’s bottomplateisatthebacksideofa displaywhere a lightsourceisapplied, and thetopplateisatthefront, facingtheviewer.Formost TFT displays, a pixeltransmitsthe greatestamount of lightwhen VPIXEL ≤ ±0.5V,and itbecomes lesstransparentas the voltageincreaseswitheitherpositiveornegativepolarity.

www.ti.com SNOSAM0B –NOVEMBER 2005–REVISED MARCH 2013 Figure22. TFT Display Figure22 shows a simplifieddiagramofa TFT display, showinghow individualpixelsareconnectedtotherow, column and VCOM driver. Each pixelisrepresentedby a capacitorwithan NMOS transistorconnectedtoitstop plate.Pixelsina TFT panelare arrangedinrows and columns.Row linesare connectedtotheNMOS gates, and column linestotheNMOS sources. The back plateofeverypixelisconnectedtoa common voltagecalled VCOM . The voltageappliedto the top plates(i.e.Gamma Voltage)controlsthe pixelbrightness. The column driverssupplythisgamma voltageviathecolumn lines, and ‘write’thisvoltagetothepixelsone row ata time. Thisisaccomplishedby havingthe row driversselectingan individualrow of pixelswhen the column drivers writethegamma voltagelevels. The row driverssequentiallyapplya largepositivepulse(typically25V to35V) to each row line.Thisturnson the NMOS transistorsconnectedto an individualrow, allowingvoltagefrom the column linestobe writtentothepixels. Figure23. TFT Panel Block Diagram Figure23 shows a blockdiagramofa TFT panel. The VCOM buffersuppliesa common voltage(VCOM )toallthe pixelsina TFT panel.Ingeneral,VCOM isa DC voltagethatisinthemiddleofthegamma voltagerange.Screen performancecan be optimizedby tuningtheVCOM voltageinthecalibrationprocedure.Using theLM8342, the VCOM calibrationprocedureissimplifiedby eliminationofthepotentiometeradjustmenttask.Thistaskiscurrently performedatthefactoryusinga trimmeradjustmenttooland visualinspection, when usinga stablereference voltageand a potentiometeras a voltagedividertogeneratetheVCOM voltage. • LM8342 EvaluationBoardThisboarddemonstratesthefunctionalityoftheLM8342 usingtheI2C compatible interfaceforcommunication. The LM8342 can easilybe demonstratedin2 applications: – Programmable currentsink – Programmable VCOM leveldriver
  • LM8342 Programmer BoardThistestboardhas dedicatedfunctionalityforcommunicatingwiththeLM8342, usingtheI2C compatibleinterface.Thisboardcan operateintwo differentmodes: – Writemode: The digitizedvalueofa potentiometersettingiswrittentotheLM8342. The usercan select on theprogrammer boardtowritethedatatotheregisterortostorethedataintheEEPROM. – Read mode: The boardreadsthestoredvaluesfromtheLM8342 ’s EEPROM and presentsthisdataonto a 3-digitdisplay. Figure30. LM8342 EvaluationSystem LAYOUT RECOMMENDATIONS A properlayoutisnecessaryforoptimum performanceof the LM8342. A low impedance and properground plane(freeofdisturbances)isrecommended, sincea currentofup to10 mA can flowwithHF contentsduring programming. The tracesfrom the GND pin to the ground plane should be as shortas possible.Itis recommended toplacedecouplingcapacitorsclosetotheVDD and AV DD pins.Connectionsofthesedecoupling capacitorstothegroundplaneshouldbe short. As SET isa sensitiveinput, crosstalktothatpinshouldbe prevented.Specialcareshouldbe takenwhen routing theinterfaceconnections. The signalson theserialinterfacecan be more than60 dB largerthantheequivalent LSB at the SET inputpin.Crosstalkbetween the interfacebus and R SET resultsindisturbanceof the output currentIOUT oftheLM8342. For applicationsrequiringa low outputcurrent(usinghighvaluesforR SET incombinationwithlow DAC settings) specialattentionshouldbe paidtotheparasiticcapacitance(CPAR )paralleltoR SET .For C PAR largerthantensof pF, a small(<1 LSB) unwanted rippleattheoutputcurrentmightbe obtained.Itisrecommended toplacethe R SET resistorclosetotheLM8342, incombinationwitha good boardlayouttoreducethisparasiticcapacitance. (2) Material type: When designated, preproduction parts are prototypes/experimental devices, and are not yet approved or released for full production. Testing and final process, including without limitation quality assurance, reliability performance testing, and/or process qualification, may not yet be complete, and this item is subject to further changes or possible discontinuation. If available for ordering, purchases will be subject to an additional waiver at checkout, and are intended for early internal evaluation purposes only. These items are sold without warranties of any kind. (3) RoHS values: Yes, No, RoHS Exempt. See the TI RoHS Statement for additional information and value definition. (4) Lead finish/Ball material: Parts may have multiple material finish options. Finish options are separated by a vertical ruled line. Lead finish/Ball material values may wrap to two lines if the finish value exceeds the maximum column width. (5) MSL rating/Peak reflow: The moisture sensitivity level ratings and peak solder (reflow) temperatures. In the event that a part has multiple moisture sensitivity ratings, only the lowest level per JEDEC standards is shown. Refer to the shipping label for the actual reflow temperature that will be used to mount the part to the printed circuit board. (6) Part marking: There may be an additional marking, which relates to the logo, the lot trace code information, or the environmental category of the part. Multiple part markings will be inside parentheses. Only one part marking contained in parentheses and separated by a "~" will appear on a part. If a line is indented then it is a continuation of the previous line and the two combined represent the entire part marking for that device.
