+- VOUT VFB -IRFB2 IDAC_OUT IRFB1 VRFB1 IDAC_OUT VID LM10010 LM10010 SNVS717C –JULY 2011–REVISED MARCH 2013 www.ti.com Theory ofOperation The LM10010 can be thoughtofas a D/A converter, convertingtheVID communicationtoanalogoutputs.Inthis device, theoutputisa currentDAC (IDAC_OUT), whichisconnectedtothefeedbacknode ofa slaveregulator. Therefore, allVID datawords aredecoded intoa 6-bitcurrentDAC output. The impedance ofthefeedbacknode atDC appearsas thetopfeedbackresistor.Thisisbecause thecontrolloopoftheslaveregulatoreffectively maintainsa constantcurrent/voltageacrossthe bottom feedbackresistor, and createslow impedance at the VOUT node. Therefore,as more currentissourced intothe feedbacknode, the more the outputvoltageis reduced.See Figure14. Figure14. Output voltageiscontrolledviacurrentinjectionintothefeedback node CurrentDAC The LM10010 currentDAC isbased on a low voltagebandgap referencesettinga currentthrougha precision adjustableresistor.Thisbandgap istrimmed forprecisionand givesexcellentperformanceover temperature. The outputcurrenthas a maximum full-scalerange of59.2µA and isadjustablewiththe6-bitVID word. This allowsfor64 settings, witha resolutionof 940 nA. The currentDAC alsohas a slew limitto preventabrupt changes in the output. As the VID data linesare set forthe outputvoltageforthe regulator, deglitchfilters providea smalldelayand theoutputcurrentriseswitha 1-e-tfunctionthatcan be identifiedby a timeconstant. VID Programming Four pinsare used tocommunicate withtheLM10010. VIDC, VIDB, and VIDA are datalines, whileVIDS isa latchingstrobethatprogramsintheLM10010 data.As shown intheTimingDiagram inFigure2,thefallingedge of VIDS latchesinthe data from VIDC, VIDB, and VIDA as the lowerthreeLSB of the IDAC value.Aftera minimum holdtime, therisingedge ofVIDS latchesinthedatafromVIDC, VIDB, and VIDA as theupperthree LSB oftheIDAC value.Internally,a delayon VIDS allowsforthesettingofallVID linessimultaneously. The VID dataword issetso thatthelowestoutputcurrentisseen atthehighestVID dataword (59.2µA ata code of 0d).Conversely,the lowestcurrentisseen at the highestVID data word (0 µA at 63d).DuringVID operationwiththe regulator, thiswilltranslateto the lowestoutputvoltagewiththe lowestVID word, and the highestoutputvoltagewiththe highestVID word. The communicationspinscan be used witha low voltage microcontroller, witha maximum VIL of0.4Vand a minimum VIH of1.1V. Upon startup, theIDAC issetata code of46d,which translatestoapproximately16 µA. Thisdefaultstartup valueistrimmedat finaltest. For applicationswitha differentdefaultoutputcurrentat startup, pleasecontact Texas Instruments.

www.ti.com SNVS717C –JULY 2011–REVISED MARCH 2013 DeglitchTime The fourdigitalinputpinsallhave deglitchfilterswhichpreventtransientnoisefromaffectingtheoperationofthe LM10010. These filterswillalsoimparta smalldelaytothedigitalsignal. On theVIDS latchingsignal, thereisan additionaldelay. As mentioned previously, thisallowsforthe VID data linesand the VIDS strobeto be set simultaneouslywithouttheneed forsetuptime. Enable Pin and UVLO The enable(EN) pinallowstheoutputofthedevicetobe enabledor disabledwithan externalcontrolsignal. Thispinisa precisionanaloginputthatenablesthedevicewhen thevoltageexceeds1.34V(typical).The EN pin has 100 mV ofhysteresisand willdisabletheoutputwhen theenablevoltagefallsbelow 1.24V (typical).IfEN is notused, itcan be leftopen, and willbe pulledhighby an internal2 µA currentsource.Sincetheenablepinhas a preciseturn-onthresholditcan be used alongwithan externalresistordividernetworkfrom VIN toconfigure thedevicetoturn-onata preciseinputvoltage. The LM10010 has a built-inunder-voltagelockout(UVLO) protectioncircuitthatkeeps thedevicefromoperating untilthe inputvoltagereaches2.65V (typical). The UVLO thresholdhas 200 mV of hysteresisthatkeeps the devicefromrespondingtopower-onglitchesduringstartup.Note thattheenableand theUVLO arefunctionally thesame as a reset.Bringingthedeviceback froma low enablesettingorfroma VDD under-voltageeventwill resetthedeviceback toitsstartupdefaultsetting. APPLICATION INFORMATION
In thisexample,an LM21215A-1 isused as the buck regulatorto provideCVDD to the TMS320C6670 or TMS320C6678 from 0.7V to 1.1V and an outputcurrentof up to 15A. The LM10010 inconjunctionwithVID controlfrom theDSP, providescontroloftheoutputvoltagewithinthisrange with6 bitsofresolution.For this example,the 400 mV of voltagerange translatesto a 6.4 mV resolutioninthe controlof the regulatoroutput voltage.Inthiscalculation,1% resistorvaluesare used.A schematicforthisexample isshown inthecircuitof Figure15. www.ti.com SNVS717C –JULY 2011–REVISED MARCH 2013 The change intheoutputvoltagecan be analyzedbased on theresolutionofthecurrentDAC fromtheLM10010 compared tothedesiredresolutionoftheoutputswingoftheregulator.R FB1 isdesignedtoprovidethedesired LSB forVOUT withtheequation: (2) Based on thedesireddefaultVOUT (withIDAC_OUT = 0 µA),R FB2 can be solvedfromEq.1 above. Example Solution Assuming a 400 mV outputrange,64 VID codes,and an IDAC LSB of0.940µA,itisdesiredtohave a VOUT with an LSB of6.4mV and a defaultvalueof1.1Vusingan LM21215A-1 regulator: (3) (4) (5) (6) Using1% resistorvalues,R FB1 can be setto6.81kΩ and R FB2 can be setto8.06kΩ.Thiswillyielda regulator outputrange of0.704V to1.107V.At startup,thecode oftheLM10010 willbe 46d (101110b)and willoutputa 15.97µA. Thiswillgivean outputvoltageofapproximately1.0V (0.998V)when power isappliedand boththe LM10010 and theLM21215A-1 come outofUVLO. Of course,valuescalculatedhere willbe dependenton the accuracyoftheregulator,theLM10010 IDAC, and theresistorvaluesused inthecircuit.
