APPLICATION INFORMATION
Single-supplyLine Driveramplifierstypicallyrequiredc-blockingcapacitors.The top drawing in Figure13 illustratestheconventionalLineDriveramplifierconnectiontotheloadand outputsignal. DC blockingcapacitorsare oftenlargein value. The lineload (typicalresistivevaluesof 600 Ω to 10 kΩ) combine withthedc blockingcapacitorstoforma high-passfilter.Equation1 shows therelationshipbetween the loadimpedance (RL),thecapacitor(CO ),and thecutofffrequency(fC ). (1) C O can be determinedusingEquation2,where theloadimpedance and thecutofffrequencyareknown. (2) IffC islow, thecapacitormust thenhave a largevaluebecause theloadresistanceissmall.Largecapacitance valuesrequirelargepackage sizes.Large package sizesconsume PCB area, stand high above the PCB, increasecostofassembly, and can reducethefidelityoftheaudiooutputsignal. Charge Pump FlyingCapacitorand PVSS Capacitor The chargepump flyingcapacitorservestotransferchargeduringthegenerationofthenegativesupplyvoltage. The PVSS capacitormust be at leastequalto the charge pump capacitorinorderto allowmaximum charge transfer.Low ESR capacitorsare an idealselection, and a valueof 1µF istypical.Capacitorvaluesthatare smallerthan1µF can be used, butthemaximum outputvoltagemay be reducedand thedevicemay notoperate tospecifications. Decoupling Capacitors The DRV601 isa DirectPath™ LineDriveramplifierthatrequireadequate power supplydecouplingto ensure thatthe noise and totalharmonic distortion(THD) are low.A good low equivalent-series-resistance(ESR) ceramiccapacitor,typically2.2µF, placedas closeas possibletothedeviceVDD leadworks best.Placingthis decouplingcapacitorclosetotheDRV601 isimportantfortheperformanceoftheamplifier. For filteringlower frequencynoisesignals,a 10-µF orgreatercapacitorplacedneartheaudiopower amplifierwould alsohelp, but itisnotrequiredinmost applicationsbecause ofthehighPSRR ofthisdevice. Gain settingresistorsranges The gainsettingresistors,R in and R fb, must be chosen so thatnoise, stabilityand inputcapacitorsizeof the DRV601 iskeptwithinacceptablelimits.Voltagegainisdefinedas R fb dividedby R in. Selectingvaluesthataretoolow demands a largeinputac-couplingcapacitor,C IN .Selectingvaluesthataretoo high increasesthe noise of the amplifier.Table 1 liststhe recommended resistorvaluesfordifferentgain settings. Table1.Recommended ResistorValues Gain InputResistorValue,R in Feedback ResistorValue,R fb -1V/V 10 kΩ 10 kΩ -1.5V/V 10 kΩ 15 kΩ -2V/V 10 kΩ 20 kΩ -10V/V 4,7kΩ 47 kΩ Input-BlockingCapacitors DC input-blockingcapacitorsare requiredtobe added inserieswiththeaudiosignalintotheinputpinsofthe DRV601. These capacitorsblocktheDC portionoftheaudiosourceand allowtheDRV601 inputstobe properly biasedtoprovidemaximum performance. These capacitorsform a high-passfilterwiththe inputresistor,R in. The cutofffrequencyiscalculatedusing Equation3.For thiscalculation, thecapacitanceused istheinput-blockingcapacitorand theresistanceisthe inputresistorchosen fromthegaintableabove,thenthefrequencyand/orcapacitancecan be determinedwhen one ofthetwo valuesaregiven. (3) Supply VoltageLimitingAt 4.5V The DRV601 have a built-inchargepump which servestogeneratea negativerailforthelinedriver.Because thelinedriveroperatesfrom a positivevoltageand negativevoltagesupply, circuitryhas been implementedto protectthedevicesintheamplifierfroman overvoltagecondition.Once thesupplyisabove 4.5V, theDRV601 can shutdown inan overvoltageprotectionmode topreventdamage tothedevice. The DRV601 resume normal operationonce thesupplyisreducedto4.5V orlower. Capacitiveload The DRV601 has theabilitytodrivea highcapacitiveloadup to330pF directly, highercapacitiveloadscan be acceptedby addinga seriesresistorof 10Ω or larger. The figurebelow shows a 10kHz signalintoa 470pF capacitorusingthe10R seriesresistor. Layout Recommendations A proposedlayoutfortheDRV601 can be seen intheDRV601EVM user'sguide,SLOU215 ,and theGerberfiles can be downloadedon www.ti.com,open theDRV601 productfolderand lookintheTools& Softwarefolder. Exposed Pad On DRV601RTJ Package The exposed metalpad on theDRV601RTJ package must be soldereddown toa pad on thePCB inorderto maintainreliability. The pad on thePCB shouldbe allowedtofloatand notbe connectedtoground or power. Connectingthispad to power or ground preventsthe devicefrom workingproperlybecause itisconnected internallytoPVSS. SGND and PGND Connections The SGND and PGND pinsoftheDRV601 must be routedback tothedecouplingcapacitorseparatelyinorder toprovideproperdeviceoperation.IftheSGND and PGND pinsare connecteddirectlytoeach other, thepart functionswithoutriskoffailure, butthenoiseand THD performancedo notmeet thespecifications. Gain settingresistors The gainsettingresistors,R in and R fb , must be placedcloseto pin13 respectivelypin17 to minimizethe capacitiveloadingon theseinputpinsand toensuremaximum stabilityoftheDRV601. For therecommenced PCB layout, see theDRV601EVM userguide.

(2) Material type: When designated, preproduction parts are prototypes/experimental devices, and are not yet approved or released for full production. Testing and final process, including without limitation quality assurance, reliability performance testing, and/or process qualification, may not yet be complete, and this item is subject to further changes or possible discontinuation. If available for ordering, purchases will be subject to an additional waiver at checkout, and are intended for early internal evaluation purposes only. These items are sold without warranties of any kind. (3) RoHS values: Yes, No, RoHS Exempt. See the TI RoHS Statement for additional information and value definition. (4) Lead finish/Ball material: Parts may have multiple material finish options. Finish options are separated by a vertical ruled line. Lead finish/Ball material values may wrap to two lines if the finish value exceeds the maximum column width. (5) MSL rating/Peak reflow: The moisture sensitivity level ratings and peak solder (reflow) temperatures. In the event that a part has multiple moisture sensitivity ratings, only the lowest level per JEDEC standards is shown. Refer to the shipping label for the actual reflow temperature that will be used to mount the part to the printed circuit board. (6) Part marking: There may be an additional marking, which relates to the logo, the lot trace code information, or the environmental category of the part. Multiple part markings will be inside parentheses. Only one part marking contained in parentheses and separated by a "~" will appear on a part. If a line is indented then it is a continuation of the previous line and the two combined represent the entire part marking for that device.
